The Sand and the Storm - DNP

spaceIt was the depth of leafbare and the mountains were thick with the white rain that drifts from the sky. My paws stung with each step. They were sore and puffy, and my pads were cracked and oozing a strange liquid. I tried to lick at them to sooth the pain, but the taste was so vile that each time I tried, my stomach would convulse and heave. My brother remained calm as we traversed these large claws of the world, and I envied his peace of mind and body.

spaceThe sun fell to the claws and the moon arose, spreading its light over the white rain which rested around our paws. My body collapsed and I laid in the snow. My chest was tight and my throat burned and cried. I didn't want to keep traveling anymore, I felt content in this cold powder. My brother understood and came by me. He laid down and we rested, curled together in that cold white rain.

spaceMy brother awoke me. He shook me with a paw eagerly and whispered into my ear that an angel had arrived. I struggled to open my eyes against the fight of the frost on my fur and turned to look. Above us, a figure stood and stared down towards us. It was a feline with long, flowing fur and silvery-white coloration. She ran towards us and knelt, asking many questions that I was too tired to answer. I watched her for a moment as she spoke to my brother, who answered with sparkling eyes, then I laid my head down on my brothers back and let my eyes close for more rest. I heard her voice grow quiet, then louder again. Soon, I felt teeth gently grab my scruff and lift me. I allowed it, seeing an opportunity to sleep again, and feeling gratitude for not having to walk on my burning paws.

spaceIt had been a week since we were found by the angel-cat, whose name was Light that Shines at Day, or simply Daystar due to her leader status. She was kind and caring. She fed us, kept us safe, and even gave us names. My brother was dubbed Echo of the Mountain Storm, while I was dubbed Sand that Breaks from Stone. She had taught us the way of the claws - which I learned were called mountains - and showed us how to survive. I tried my best to keep up, but each day my body weakened until I could no longer muster the strength to rise from my bed in the morning. Daystar showed concern as my health deteriorated, and on that morning that my strength could not lift me, she picked my up by the scruff and carried me, with Echostorm trotting alongside her. They chatted and talked as we moved, though sadness was thick in her voice.

We arrived at the end of the mountains and entered the forests. Something about those lumbering trees felt familiar, but I did not say it. It took a full cycle of the sun for us to arrive at our destination. The scent of new, strange cats drifted over from bushes and trees. Daystar entered the ring of cat smells and walked ahead. Not long after, we were greeted by a chocloate bi-color she-cat with odd eyes. At first she was suspicious, but when she saw me realization seemed to overpower her tension and she invited us to follow. Daystar moved after her and we entered a new camp, one of grass, trees, and heat. The female called out a name, Lightpool, and mostly white diluted calico came rushing over. She spoke swiftly to Daystar, asking what had happened and how long I had been like this. After a rapid conversation, she took me and carried me swiftly into a den marked by a wide, squat bush. There, she rested me on a warm bed and gave me herbs that, though bitter, seemed to give my body some strength again. She ground up leaves and spread the paste over my paws, then fed me an herb that removed the tightness of my chest. After some time, and many herbs, she asked me to rest - something I was more than happy to do.

I was worried about him, but what could I do? He is my brother and still, I didn't seem to have any way to help him. Here we were alone and despite my confidence and attitude I knew there was nothing I could do which would save him. Every day I watched as my brother became weaker and weaker, barely able to walk. My heart panged with fear for him and I couldn't stand it anymore. Looking over at my brother, I watched with anxiety as he collapsed into the snow. So this was it then. I didn't know if we would be able to rise again but for now, I knew the best I could do was stay with him and hope for a miracle. Stepping over, I delicately wrapped myself around him, hoping to give him just a hint of relief in the cold winds. Putting my head against his side I listened with relief as his heartbeat reassured me of his survival.

Some time as we sat there together with his heartbeat in my ear, I drifted off to a light sleep. The sound of snow crunching woke me up, causing me to jump in fright. I felt fear when I didn't even rouse my brother with my surprise. This fear led to a sense of desperation. I had no idea who this stranger was that I heard but I knew friend or foe, they were my brothers last chance. Calling out, I begged the stranger for help hoping they would return. The snow crunched again as the underbrush shook. A lone she-cat emerged, worry in her gaze at the sound of kits cries. When she spotted them her eyes widened with fear. Rushing over, she scanned me quickly but I refused to sit still, instead trying to lead her to my brother. When she finally turned her gaze to him, she scowled in fear. As a loud screech seemed to echo in the distance, she looked up before turning to me once more. “Can you wake him? It's not safe here. We need to move. I'll take you to my tribe. There it will be safe and warm. Come now young one.“ I didn't know if I could but I tried, this was the miracle I had been asking for. Finally, this was something I could do to help my brother. Eagerly, I did my best to wake him, shaking him and exclaiming with playful sincerity,“Look, brother. An angel has arrived.“ I breathed a breath of relief when his eyes looked up to see the stranger.

She gently knelt down to our level and I looked up to her with eager eyes. She tried to ask my brother some things but I could tell by the exhaustion and distanced look on his face that he would be unable to respond. The she-cat seemed to come to the same conclusion and instead turned to me. “How long has he been like this? Can he walk?“ I didn't quite know how to respond to the first one as I curled my body around my brother seeing him unconsciously tremble in the cold. “I-I don't know,“ I whispered gently, the light in my eyes dimming a bit as he tried to burrow into my warmth and fall back into sleep. “I don't t-think he can walk either. Please,“ I turned to her with pleading eyes. “You've got to help him.“ Nodding she purred reassuringly to me. “Come along then. I'll carry him. I just need you to walk with me, alright?“ I nodded quickly agreeing to her terms and purred a bit as she gave me a gentle nudge before bending down to grip my brother's scruff gently. Standing, he fell asleep quickly as she carried him and I moved to follow her. Making sure I was beside her, she gave me a small nod before turning to what seemed to be a trail.

On the way there, she would point out little things that I failed to notice previously. How there was small herbs and plants buried under the top layer of snow and protected from frost be the gentle white powder. Where the sky would seem to reflect off the ice on the landscape. The coolest thing of all was that underneath all the emptiness was hidden life, small animals peeking out of their homes, pine trees with green needles reaching towards the sky, and what I decided had to be the coolest of all, the sound of a fast breeze flowing through the broken bark of a dead tree causing a gentle whistling which seemed to echo through the clearing. She watched on with light amusement, often checking on the kit in her grip to ensure he was still alright. When they finally made it to her tribe's cavern, she gently sat my brother on the sand. There were hardly any other cats around but those her were watched with curiosity. Giving me a bit of rest, I carried myself to my brother as she gathered what she could to help us. Some moss was a priority but she lined the nest she built for us with thick feathers, trying to hold in a little extra warmth. Nodding to me once more, she lifted my brother again and rested him on the nest and I moved to sit beside him, falling into a sleepy exhaustion after the long day.

As time passed by, I found those days spent in the tribe to easily be some of the best of my life. The wind in my fur, the sights and the sounds, everything was absolutely amazing! She even gave us names. My brother was Sand that Breaks from Stone. A cool name, yet not as cool as mine. Echo of the Mountain Storm. When I asked Daystar, she told me it was because she saw me as a dangerous storm, carrying danger in it's approach yet offering comfort to most through its gentle thunder. For the first time, I felt like I was home. Nothing but my brother and the mountains. Light that shines at Day has been caring for us, feeding us and training us. While brother wasn't yet strong enough, she'd even taught me some small battle maneuvers. Nothing too serious and I knew she wouldn't have done so if I hadn't fiercely requested it. Never again did I want to feel as useless as I'd felt before. If my brother and I were in danger, I wanted to make sure I could protect him. When I explained this to her she finally relented.

In those moments of training, I'd never felt more alive. Heart racing and the thrill of battle, I did everything I could to win against the she-cat and she grinned pridefully at me as we traded blows. She was moving slower than I'd seen and I knew she was taking it easier on me yet I couldn't find it within myself to care. This was just so much fun! This had to be it. I had finally found where I belonged. My brother... didn't seem to agree with me. He wasn't well. He didn't seem to have the thickness of fur needed to push through the bitter cold and he just didn't do well in the harshness of the atmosphere. No matter what daystar did, she could help him and I felt that same bitterness and fear emerging once more. The fear of losing my brother shadowed over my head, plaguing my every thought. As he began to weaken once again we found ourselves pacing anxiously. There came the day he could barely move, weakly gazing around at the world with tired eyes and I came to Daystar with desperation.
