PromptFireKit was so excited, he was about to become an apprentice. He was going to be the best apprentice EVER! He rushed over to the pond the second EmberStar had started talking, he skidded to a halt soaking the small figure of EmberStar. He dipped his head in shame. when the clan had gathered their leader began the ceremony, "FireKit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as FirePaw. Your mentor will be FrostBite. I hope FrostBite will pass down all she knows on to you" she said, her voice ringing clearly through the camp. FrostBite looked up in surprise, and FirePaw sighed in disappointment, FrostBite was not the sort of cat he had wanted a mentor. FirePaw had wanted someone young and strong like himself, not lousy and old. He scolded himself, FrostBite was only a few moons older than EmberStar, and she was nice enough, just kind of ... dull. The ceremony continued on "FrostBite, you are ready to take on another apprentice, you have shown yourself to be wise and passionate. You will be the mentor of FirePaw, and i expect you to pass on all you know to FirePaw" the warrior dipped her head as FirePaw reluctantly touched noses with her. Well maybe this won't be so bad, he thought contentedly, looking into her warm hypnotic gaze. His original thoughts came back as they "learned" the territory borders. Seeing a FirePaw had snuck out many times as a kit he already knew all of the borders. He didn't dare tell her this, because she had no sense of fun and would just tell EmberStar. FirePaw endured a long, boring day of walking around. Sullenly following his mentor, they arrived at Tall-tree, but he was severely unimpressed. He had already been to the top and down again. After ages of walking the finally came back to camp. His legs ached and he started heading towards the nursery, he shook himself, he slept in the apprentice den now. This made him uneasy.
After about a moon he was assigned to care for the elders, ugh elders. This just meant another day of old, boring cats, he had already done so much for them in his apprenticeship. His eyes glazed over as his mentor taught him where to find the dryest moss, and how to remove all of the thorns. He just followed her to the moss and started doing it his own way, he soon pricked himself with a thorn, drawing blood. But he ignored it knowing he might look weak if he told his mentor, then maybe she wouldn't think he was strong enough to ever learn how to fight. He brought the moss to the elders den, and set it in a corner. He started removing the old moss, the elders were nowhere to be seen. Soon he was done and he turned around, only to see the elder, GoldFinch standing in the entranceway. FirePaw rolled his eyes "and what do you want?" he groaned, the elder smiled "that depends on you, i could help you with your hunting crouch if you're up for it" he offered kindly, FirePaw shook his head. He wanted to learn from a warrior, even a dull one was better then some random elder. He went over to where he last saw FrostBite. She was waiting patiently for him, he looked up at her, waiting for what annoying unimportant thing he should do next. FrostBite looked cooly at him "i would recommend you go to the medicine den for you paw." He looked down at his foot, wincing he went over to the medicine den. FirePaw glanced around, then the medicine cat came out of a corner, he had never seen her before. He looked into the medicine cats wise eyes, holding out his paw. She started by rinsing it off, and she spoke. Her voice reminded him of a thousand shards of ice cracking and melting into the pond, it was crisp and clear, ringing out, but also haunting and shattered from loss. He shivered and missed what she had actually said, she looked at him "oh, uhh" he stammered with a feeling her voice would haunt him even in starclan, she sighed "how did you hurt you paw?" she inquired. FirePaw didn't want to tell her, as it was foolish but something about her compelled him to explain. And once he started speaking it all spilled out, everything from his dislike of his mentor, to his sneaking out of camp. She listened patiently, then simply asked "why?" and continued doing her medicine stuff, but she mostly seeming to be wrapping and unwrapping cobwebs on his paw, was she even doing anything, or just having a conversation? He then focused on her question. Why what? He wondering going through a million possibilities, then decided to answer what kept coming back to him. Why was he telling her but not his mentor "i don't know, i just, well trust you?" he says not at all knowing why, and he knew it sounded stupid. The medicine cat barked a sharp laugh that rang through the medicine den "and i haven't even told you my name" she said with a cold gaze. Her expression softened as she saw the look of terror on his face "don't worry i'm CrystalClear" she said, then wrapped the cobwebs back she looked at him sharply "now go tell your mentor" he left to go look for her pondering what to tell his mentor. In the end he told her how boring he thought she was. FrostBite smiled sadly at him, then brightened "well why didn't you just say so?" she asked. Looking much more youthful she dashed into the forest, he ran after her puzzled. Was there really a friendly playful cat buried under all that lameness? He followed her scent trail to talltree then lost it, he scanned his surrounding spotting a tuft of her fur on a thorn, it smelled fresh. He soon picked up the trail again and found her in the training clearing, he arrived panting. She looked up to greet him "good job, you managed to follow me here, on only your second day of training!" she told him enthusiastically. This caused FirePaw to swell with pride. FrostBite told him to collect 4 feathers, he wondered why for a minute. Then deciding just to focus on getting them, he thought about where to look, he decided to start at tall-tree, and headed that way. His mentor called after him "be back here by sundown!" he jumped in alarm, he didn't have much time at all. He bounded forward at great speed, he made it to tall-tree panting very hard. he examined the forest floor, but he only saw one feather. FirePaw grabbed it in his teeth, and leapt up the trunk climbing fast. But his lack of caution caused his back leg to slip out from underneath him. He managed to catch himself, barely, but the sun was setting fast now. He scrambled back up the tree, finding an abandoned nest he, set his feather in it, and grabbed it in his jaws. And so he half fell, half slid back down the tree, and he raced back to the clearing dropping it there, only then did her look at it, he only had three feathers, but better than nothing he supposed. Then cleared his mind, no! Not good enough, this was a test, one that he couldn't fail, he dashed back into the forest, franticly scanning the ground, he looked up at the sky, and through the canopy of leaves he could see that the sun had set. he looked around in defeat, and trudged back to the clearing his head hanging low, but when he got there, he couldn't find FrostBite, he couldn't trace her either, she must have left him, left him for another apprentice. FirePaw looked up through the thick darkness, and spotted her crouching nearby, "i failed!" he cried into the darkness, and as she came out and looked into the nest she smiled "you did much better than most apprentices could do in their first moon" she pointed out, "but i still failed" he whined. Then FrostBite crouched before him "no, look again" he slumped over to the the small next, his mentor took the three feathers out, and he saw a pearly gleam, a feather was hidden between the twigs. FirePaw gasped in delight. Soon for the next moon he was put through many trials, and at first he usually failed, but his mentor always had a way to fix it, he learned many tips and tricks from her, and started to "pass" these tests. He enjoyed training with her very much, she was clever, kind and helpful, he started coming to her for advice on just about everything. And however strange this sounds, he was sad to become a warrior, as he would miss training with her. And EmberStar named him FireFlight, after the feathers that had started his bond with FrostBite. But he soon came to realise they still had a strong mentor-apprentice bond, and they are still the best of friends.
