Second Chance Shelter wrote:Second Chance Shelter is a dog and cat rescue where you can come to find a new member of your family. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. All of our animals are special and deserve a chance to be happy with an owner that will care for them. The question is: are you ready to love them?

It seems we're just doing chickens now... okay?
This kid was trapped in a burning house, left with some scars and now seems to be in a constant agitated or cautious state. They really need to learn to trust someone if they are to be adopted.

Vinnie lost his previous family in a house fire. He tried to
rescue them, but was forced out by smoke and flames. This is
where he acquired his scars. Now, loud noises frighten him and he
has a hard time making his way out from under his favorite place,
the bed. I would try to keep Vinnie calm by providing a quiet
environment for him to recover mentally in and be patient with
him while I allow him to slowly warm up to me. I would play quiet
white noise, like beach or forest sounds, and feed him treats, like
pieces of cheese or lunch meat. The most important thing would
be to allow him to open up again at his own pace and to provide
the most patience I can. Calm surroundings in the country with a
lot of space to explore and get his energy out with running would
be a really big benefit to him. I would give him the companionship
of other dogs, but only when he is ready for that milestone.

How do you earn her trust? First I would introduce her to Otarlo on neutral ground, a secure part of the yard Tarlo doesn't normally have access to. After supervising for an hour, I'd just let them be and let Tarlo befriend Mala for a few days, only visiting to feed and water them. Once Tarlo has gained Mala's trust, I will let him convince her I can be trusted. I would let them back into the main yard and stick to the routine Tarlo knows, he can show Mala that I'm not a threat. I wouldn't push her, letting her take her time coming to me, but once I knew she was comfortable, I would begin bonding with her. Playing, petting and training. I would pay careful attention to her body language and work accordingly.
Though fully healed, Mala's scars are very sensitive and she doesn't really like things touching them. To make it the most comfortable for her, I would give her a simple thin rope collar with a single tag attached to keep weight minimal. I would train her in voice commands and not use a leash or harness as both would sit right over scars. My hope is to eventually convince her that something touching the scarred skin won't bring pain, but one thing at a time. First, I must convince her that I am not a threat, that cuddles and play are enjoyable. I just hope that Mala doesn't pick up on Tarlo's bad habits.
