lucky charm: who needs a charm or ritual when your own charm is enough luck. she's a huge astrology lover and being a sagittarius, her ruling planet is jupiter. jupiter is arguably the luckiest planet so in a way her zodiac sign is her good luck charm and in a way she's her own.

lucky charm: cassette tape
“...you know it’s out of my control now, right?” she asks, to clarify, to break the silence.
“yeah,” knot answers, “and i’m still not okay with it.”
knot smiles, but her eyes don’t. rainier frowns, feeling a drop in her stomach, and so does knot. rainier sighs, annoyed. exasperated. desperate.
“you know i can’t leave with us like this, and my bus comes in at six.”
“yeah, i know.”
“okay,” rainier answers, heart fluttering. she couldn’t bear to leave, already having given knot her farewell gift; a tiny swiss army knife (from her own personal collection, too). she pulls knot into a hug, feeling her heart race, feeling like she was over a ledge.
knot pulls back, holding rainier’s face in her hands, staring up into her eyes, laying a kiss on her lips.
“i’m gonna miss you so much.”
“i know. i love you.”
“i know.”
rainier nods in acknowledgement, tears dotting her face. it didn’t help that the sun was in her eyes, that she was facing, her head-on. knot reached into a pocket, grabbing her cassette, laying it into rainier’s hands.
“don’t you dare forget me when you’re all rich and famous,” she says with a laugh.
“i promise i won’t.”
rainier turns away, walking a little too slowly back home where her suitcase waited. she turned the cassette tape over in her hands, tracing the ridges with a thumb, the label reading: “knot’s best tunes - don’t forget about me! <3”

{mariah ; haughty lesbian ; she/her }
truly, she could have laughed at the idea of having some sort of lucky charm. that was something children did, like writing letters to santa in hopes that he’d answer back, or wishing on shooting stars in the middle of the night. it was too foolish for her to even consider, but when her mother announced that she had been diagnosed with brain cancer, mariah felt the weight of it hit her a thousand times over.
if she was going to be honest and look herself in the mirror, she would have to admit that she was not a true punk, though she was never admit that to anyone, and even to this day, would still grumble about her mother’s forehead kisses as she was sent off to school. her looks made her the textbook definition of a punk kid—boldly dyed hair, visible piercings, a permanent snear, and maybe even a tattoo hidden away on her hip. but she loved her mother, and when her friends weren’t around to tease her about it, she was free to snuggle up with her mom and let her facade fall away. she allowed her mother to take down her hair and brush all of the gel away until it was a silky pink mop. it was a comforting gesture, and the unspoken acceptance of her choices weighed heavily on her heart.
her mother died two weeks after she graduated from high school. the graduation was already overwhelming, but having her mother not recognize her was the worst part. for two weeks, she stayed home and cooked for her mother. she brushed her hair and sang to her, and even laid in the bed next to her, as if she couldn’t bare to be away from her. those two weeks were the worst moments of her entire life, but the very end, when her mother shoved something into her palm and whispered, “i love you.”—it broke her heart in two.
her mother had given her a string of pearls. she knew it was her mother’s most prized possession, and that it had been passed down from her grandmother, and her great grandmother, and so on. it was a family heirloom, and it held the most precious memories, especially now.
mariah left for college, and took her mother with her—in the safety of her jacket pocket. when she was anxious or lonesome, she would fish them out of her pocket and gently hold the pearls to her cheek. it made her feel small again, and it was almost enough to bring her back to the moments when her mother was well and and the times she would brush her hair back. it was her lucky charm, though she would never admit that to her friends. they wouldn’t understand how close she was to her mother. no one would.
