𝓛𝓮𝓽 𝓾𝓼 𝓽𝓮𝓵𝓵 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂 𝓸𝓯 𝓪 𝔀𝓸𝓸𝓭.

To do this we must look back eons ago, back when only the smallest of villages dotted the vast, unexplored wilderness. When the mystic elementals still controlled the world, and the magic within the earth was plain as day. It was a time of wild energies and hidden dangers, where any turn could be your last. But it was also a time of fierce protectors, those who would control such energies and use them to keep safe the things important to them. Every day was a new battle between the darkness and the light, a new chance to discover something new or to find one’s end.

𝓛𝓮𝓽 𝓾𝓼 𝓽𝓮𝓵𝓵 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂 𝓸𝓯 𝓪 𝓼𝓹𝓲𝓻𝓲𝓽.

Ik’tu was the youngest of a family of forest spirits, all wild and revered in their own way. His seven brothers and seven sisters each reigned over their own section of the wood, keeping the balance and the peace. But Ik’tu had no such place. He quarreled with his siblings, often causing mischief wherever he went. He could never stay in one place for long; if he was caught, his siblings would banish him back to the spirit realm where he could play no more. And thus he travelled constantly, a legend among the very few who had ever witnessed his revelry.

The spirits took it upon themselves to watch over the inhabitants of their respective region of the forest, be it mouse, deer, or lion. The kalons that lived within the wood came to know their spirits, and seeing that they would be much worse off without them, gave thanks for the help and nurturing they received. Kalonfolk would pay heed to their guardians, giving them the utmost respect in return for protection. The spirits of the wood found this appropriate and grew proud from the kalons’ words of praise. These ways continued for centuries, traditions passed down from one generation to the next.

Over time, however, the memories of the great spirits faded away more and more as the bloodline of the ancient kalons grew thin. There were few who remembered to give offerings to the protectors, and still fewer who had ever witnessed their feats. Legend turned to fairy tale, and the younger kalonfolk had no belief in such stories. As villages grew, faith weakened, and this perturbed and insulted the guardians who had blessed them and allowed them to thrive.

𝓛𝓮𝓽 𝓾𝓼 𝓽𝓮𝓵𝓵 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓼𝓽𝓸𝓻𝔂 𝓸𝓯 𝓪 𝓰𝓲𝓻𝓵.

Jal grew up in one of very few forest villages, and though she loved her home dearly, she could feel the wood calling to her. Her heart longed to be free amongst the endless green, with no obligations to anyone except herself. The mossy ground was more enticing than the hard-packed earth of the village square, and the canopy of leaves overhead was more comforting than any thatched roof. And yet, she knew not the courage of her ancestors, so she remained in the confines of her home. Still, she couldn’t resist the song of the wood, and some nights when the moon was new and the crickets chirped their melodies, she would sneak away from her village and explore the wealth of the earth.

It was she who first knew something was amiss. In her nightly escapades, she noticed fewer fireflies guiding her way, and her nocturnal companions were nowhere to be found. The woods were silent around her, the darkness cold and unwelcoming.

A stranger from the north arrived in Jal’s village, telling a frightening tale of the destruction of his own hometown. The cold winds had blown relentlessly, bringing a frost like no one had ever seen before. The young kalonfolk laughed at such a story, but the elders were grim. It appeared the spirits had forsaken them at last. Such a notion only made the young ones sneer more.

They did not sneer when the raging winds ripped their thatch roofs to shreds, when the chill from the north came and froze over every body of water they used to drink. They did not sneer when they were buried beneath the snow, their cries of repentance drowned out by the howls of the wind.

Jal had heeded her elders’ warning and fled the village before the worst of the storms hit. Still, the cold caught up to her, and it wasn’t long before she too was huddled beneath a great oak, a wool shawl wrapped tightly around her shoulders. Despite this, she succumbed to the ice, and soon the whiteness filled her vision until she saw no more.

Ik’tu stumbled across Jal as he too escaped the frozen winds. He had watched her from afar as she wandered in the night and, taking pity on her, breathed life into her once again.

Name: Willa. Formerly Lady Wilhelmina. -- Gender: Female.

"Hello there! It does not appear that you are from around these parts, here take this scarf. What on Earth are you doing so far North?" The man on the other side of the counter spoke as you wandered through his store to where he stood, watching as he leaned onto his walking stick as he held out the scarf.
Reaching out, you took the scarf from his hand. "Hello. Oh, thank you. I have been told of a lady who lives up towards the mountain, I was hoping you could tell me about her. I've been told that you were her mentor."
There was a pause. "No, I'm sorry. I can not speak to you about such things."
"Sir, her family are searching for her." This was followed by yet another pause, but the man appeared to consider what you said before he replied.
"I will not talk to you about her, but I could take you to her."

After bundling up into coats, scarves and hats, yourself and the old man began the walk up into the trees from the small shack selling all sorts of items for a weary traveller. The snow crunched under foot as you walked, watching as he stabbed his walking stick deep into the snow as he led the way up a steep incline where the faint glows of blue and orange were visible.

"What's her name?"
"Her name is Willa."
"Is it short for anything? Like Wilhelmina?"
The man turned his head to look at you with his brows furrowed, "It's just Willa. If there were higher formalities, I would have given them to you."
"I've been told she's a Lady."
"She may be wherever she comes from, but here, she is just Willa."
You nodded in response before continuing behind the man in silence, however this silence didn't last long. "What is she like?"
Stopping for a moment, the man leaned back onto a nearby tree taking a long sip of the tea that had been attached to his hip. He breathed out a cloud of air before looking back up the hill. He breathed in deeply before he replied, "She is lovely, though she is over critical. Particularly of herself." He glanced back to you, "Willa likes her privacy, she has shared very little of her past with me. Maybe, it is because she knew there would be people like you coming to look for her." He rubbed his hands together before breathing into them, warmth radiating from him, "She is intelligent, but she does not always have common sense. Willa doesn't trust herself not to hurt people, that is why she is still here. Though, I think her reasons for staying may be more selfish than that."
"What do you mean?" You asked as you adjusted your jacket before stuffing your hands back into your pockets.
The man began to walk again, appearing to have ignored your question. As you opened your mouth to ask again, he replied. "Willa has hurt people in the past, I believe that you are very aware of that." His gaze met yours, "I saw your wrist." His lips pressed into a tight line, "I shouldn't be taking you. Willa does not want to meet the repercussions of her prior actions. They were accidents."
"I do not blame her." Your gaze lowered as you pulled your hands back from your pockets, your fingers ghosting over the blue flesh visible between your glove and jacket sleeve.
"It's not only just us who may judge her." He looked to you as you continued towards the lights, "Please, tell me about where she is from and what she was like."
"There's a small village down South, on one side you have the ocean and on the other you are wild meadows and fields of livestock. It's beautiful. Lord Gideon and Lady Eleanor own the land, pay the farmers and generally just do what they can to look after everyone. They're lovely people." You paused for a moment, "Willa was born on the Winter Solstice and the entire village celebrated. It was the first time we had snow. As she got older her abilities became more apparent. She would fly to the tops of trees to gather the fruits no one else could reach and would play with the other children, catching their kites or fetching toys that had gotten stuck. But then her ice powers came in and she just couldn't keep them under control. She froze the rives, lakes and the ocean for as far as we could see. It was when she injured some of the villagers, including myself, that she decided to leave."
[personality & history: 779/800]

The man appeared to think about it for a while before he smiled gently, "Thank you." He turned his head to the small cabin with flickering orange lights in the windows, above the roof was Willa floating with her eyes closed. "She meditates a lot, she says it helps. Just give her a moment, she knows we're here." There was a long moment of just the wind howling through the trees, the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional crunch of snow as attempted to warm yourself.
"Charles, I believe that I have spoken to you about this before. Please, do not bring guests to my cabin." She didn't open her eyes, but she lowered herself to the ground.
"This is different. I think you should speak to them."
As she met the ground Willa opened her eyes, her gaze fell upon you before she looked away. Her voice was quiet, "I know you. Why are you here?"
"I wanted to speak with you," You glanced briefly to the man, who's name you had just found out was Charles, before returning to looking at the Lady, "Privately." She appeared to consider for a moment before smiling weakly at Charles. He returned the smile before turning to head back down the hill. Willa kept her head low as she walked into her cabin, her antlers brushing the doorframe as she stepped inside. Turning her head, she looked at your shoulder to avoid your gaze, "Are you coming?"
You followed Willa into the small cabin, turning to face her as she shut the door before following her as she walked to add more wood onto the burning fire. She headed into the kitchen, quietly putting the kettle on as you shrugged off your jacket and peeled off your gloves. Your right hand was tinged blue like the colour of superficial frostbite, through the damaged skin your veins were visible, emphasising the blue as the bolts of colour spread over your arm. When you looked away from the remnants of your injury, you noticed that Willa was also looking at it. "I did that." Her voice was quiet until she looked back to your face, but continued to avoid your eyes.
"You did, but it's superficial." You told her in a soft voice, "It doesn't hurt -"
"Anymore?"
You hummed slightly as she poured the hot water into the mugs, it had hurt when it happened. But no, it didn't hurt anymore. The silence was uncertain and uncomfortable as Willa handed you the mug that she had just filled with tea before the pair of you wandered into the living room to sit around the crackling fire. "Can you control them better now?"
"I believe so. I try not the use them for they don't have much use. I can freeze things and move snow, what use does that really have? Not a lot."
"I thought Charles mentored you though?"
"He did and I can control it. I can choose when to do something and prevent myself from spontaneously freezing ... people, trees, lakes, and so on and so forth." Willa looked to you again, "I'll admit, the levitation while meditating is particularly relaxing." A smile formed onto her face, it was weak but it was gentle and welcoming.
You sipped at your tea as you observed Willa. She lowered her head again, peering into the mug that sat upon her lap as she appeared to think. She glanced away to the window, licking her top teeth before leaning forward to place the mug onto the table in front of her. She curled her long legs beneath herself before glancing to you, her gaze was calm and lacked the panic that you remembered her for. "Why have you not come home?"
Her expression appeared to falter before returning to calm before she spoke, "I hurt people. I caused suffering throughout the town. My parents did not need to suffer the consequences of an uncontrollable child, nor did the people that held them with such high regard."
"Wilhelmina, yo-" "Willa." "Willa, you are dearly missed. You should come home, even if you only stay a few days." Willa turned her head away from you, her gaze resting on the floor as she considered what was said.
"I will, when I am ready. When I know that I will hurt no one else."
"You will never know that you won't. We all hurt others, it's in our nature. Whether we intend to or not doesn't matter, it happens and we all learn to forgive, even if we don't all forget."
Willa rubbed her face as she looked over to you with a small laugh, "Now when did you become so wise?" She smiled softly as you met her gaze. Her expression remained soft.
"Time changes people."
