Doris had never been so scared in her life. One minute she was exploring a new patch of forest, and the next, she was here. Attempting to stand, she glanced nervously behind her, trying to figure out where here was. The dapple mare could feel herself panicking as she struggled to get up, but there wasn't enough room. She could still see thankfully, but what she saw didn't make sense. Okay, I know I’m not the smartest equid, but I seriously think the ground is trying to eat me! This thought did nothing to comfort her and she whinnied nervously.
Doris glanced up and blinked at the bright light of day streaming down from above her. From what she could tell, the ground had opened up underneath her, and was having a tough time swallowing. “Hah, don’t took too big of a bite, did ya’?” she said in a scared tone, continuing to wiggle around and trying to get her hooves beneath her belly.
She tried not to think about the earth eating her too much. She was absolutely covered in dirt, and whenever her body brushed against a side more rained down on her. It got in her eyes and tickled her ears. Finally, she couldn't take it any longer. “Help! Help, someone, please! I’m being eaten!”
Her cries continued for what felt like forever before a shape suddenly blocked out the light.
“… Hello?” a masculine voice called down.
“Ah! Hello, yes, please help me!” she exclaimed hopefully.
“Um… Are you stuck?”
“I think so – though watch out! I think the ground is trying to eat me!” she said, hoping that this kind soul wouldn't get eaten either. It really wasn't that much fun.
“What… Jeez, okay here, grab my tail,” said the voice with a hint of impatience.
After a few more minutes of struggle, Doris was out of the earth’s gaping mouth and back on solid land. She quickly skittered over to the base of a tree, hoping the ground wouldn't eat her there.
“You clumsy mare,” said the stranger with an incredulous look, “how in the world did you fall down there?”
Doris just glared at him in return. “I didn't fall, I was nearly swallowed. How else do you explain what just happened?” she asked as she tried to shake a bit of the dirt from her grey pelt.
The stallion just nickered at her and retorted “it’s called a sinkhole, genius. You probably fell into it. You have to be careful, since they’re all over this area,” he said before turning and leaving.
Doris had no clue how to respond to this. Sinkhole? This guy is nuts. I hope he doesn't get eaten by the ground though… “Um, thank you! You be careful, too!”
And with that, Doris picked her way back to the herd, her heartbeat racing, and her head filed with stories that she wouldn't ever forget.
