Paddington is a well renowned pastry chef. But, like most extraordinaires, he had less
spectacular beginnings.

---

It all started one mother's day morning, when he was just a lad. He wanted to do something
special, and while one would normally think to make something sweet and fun for their parent
on a holiday or birthday (like waffles, or even a cake!) his mother was in bed ill. Just a small
cold, of course, due to the wet weather that comes about in early spring. However, Paddington
knew that this wouldn't be the best for her health - even as a small boy who wanted to make
desserts, he knew too much sugar wasn't good for you!

But he did know one thing that was good for you when you were under the weather....soup.

He still wanted it to be a fun day though. Sweets were unhealthy, soup was healthy, but what
about sweet soup? That had to still be good for you, right?!? After all, his vitamins were good
for him and they looked like gummy bears.

Poor, poor Paddington had been up all night. He was afraid to set an alarm clock like a normal
person would, for fear of waking his mother who both needed rest and needed to be asleep for the
sake of surprise. He stayed up (most of) all night, jolting himself awake here and there waiting for
the early sun to peek through his curtains. Excitedly, albeit rather clumsily, he lumbered down from
his bed and into the small yet tidy kitchen.

He stood thinking for a moment, before promptly pulling out a list he had made overnight and
placing it on the tabletop. It read the following;

2 cups milk (warm)
1/2 cup sprinkles
1 tsp sugar
handful of m&m's candy
shredded coconut (to taste)
Love

The young kalon wasted no time before pulling out plenty of bowls, measuring cups, and
ingredients. They didn't have a lot of fany stuff in the house, but it was enough and he made
sure to double check everything ahead of time to make sure nothing would run out and leave
the recipe incomplete.

He heated the milk in a pan on the stove, not too hot but more than lukewarm. First, he mixed
in the sprinkles - the rainbow kind that feel like they're made out of really tiny bits of cake - which,
once melted, turned his 'soup' to a nice lavender color. He turned off the heat, and let it cool for
a moment before mixing in the larger pieces of chocolate candy so that they wouldn't melt in imme-
diately. Lastly, he added the coconut....it turned soggy rather quickly, but it added some extra
sweetness, and an interesting texture...he thinks it'll work just fine.

'Love' is a rather abstract ingredient, and of course, "made with love" is just an expression. None-
theless, Paddington blew multiple kisses over his concoction before scrambling to clean up some of his
mess in order to make room for a food tray, which he places a bowl, a spoon, and a card he had made
with crayon and lined paper on. He poured some of the purple mix into the bowl as carefully as he could,
scooping some of the best ingredients out to make sure his mom got the utmost experience.

He excitedly - and almost hurriedly - made his way out of the kitchen, doing his best to balance every-
thing and not spill while he pushed the door to his sleeping mother's room open. It creaked despite his best
efforts, but he felt bad trying to wake her up even if it was to give her breakfast in bed..

Paddington felt his mother' voice tickle his ear fur. Something about food...and masterpieces...she was
thankful. He put his heart into it. If he hadn't been asleep he may have detected some amusement.
"m&m soup..." he murmured, before curling up into a tighter ball and pulling what before had been
his mother's blankets around himself, falling into a deep sleep. He could hear dishes being washed and
put away as he fell into a deep slumber.

{Told from Kalon's POV}

Nothing lights up our mind and body like cooking can, which makes a special experience in the kitchen one we remember, return to and savor for life. Every year traditions are made and lost, but my favorite that I hope will never die, is sitting around a crackling fire with friends and family making Christmas cookies. Yes, I know it sounds so unoriginal and boring, something everyone does on Christmas or any time of the season, but music and laughter and stories are what makes it special, not the cookies. What other time of year do you have an excuse to cram 23 people in your two-story house just to hang out and make food? Sure, after a while you sneak off with your favorite people and play truth or dare while the adults are preoccupied with the 'big people drinks' and tales from their childhoods that never seem to get old. And then the parents realize they're missing a few kids and call you back for fresh baked cookies and warm drinks. Coffee and warm creamy hot chocolate that makes your heart feel like it's being hugged when being downed. So I suppose it still may sound unexciting, but it means the world to those who don't have the chance to see relatives before the holidays, making it all the more special. Of course, when they leave you can't help but feel the emptiness that was there before they arrived, like a part of you left with them until next year. It warmed me all over to write this, as I can't wait until Christmas Eve rolls around and everyone gets together and just relaxes and has fun.

favourite food memory:

It had to be the night where Darcy went to the best party they've ever been to

It was kind of a 'candy' themed disco, there was music blaring, which Darcy hated, but they promised their friends that they would come this time, there was a massive table full of food and sweet treats, they looked so good, so they timidly walked away from their friends, which they were glad about since their group seemed to be doubling by the second. (A few years later whenever they looked back on the memory Darcy vaguely remembers comparing the group to cells multiplying, or something like that) The table was full of foods that Darcy had never even seen before, which was strange since they had a sweet tooth

they spent the rest of the night chatting with the other quiet kalons who gathered around the table to hide the fact that they didn't want to be crowded by loads of others jumping up and down to some sort popular music.
their favourite out of all of the sweet treats on the table had to be the Liege Waffles, they tasted so good and Darcy decided to buy some later they also enjoyed the other things like chocolate dipped strawberries, cookies macaroons, doughnuts, the list was super long

They noticed that their friends were glaring at them throughout the night, and Darcy had no idea what they did wrong, but at least they made a few friends at the party, because their ‘friends’ that convinced them to go to the party all of a sudden stopped talking to Darcy

When Darcy got home that night, a little bit bummed out, they found out that their mum had made their favourite brownies, which were all gooey on the inside, they relished the moment

kalon name:
nightingale - "Gale"

favorite food memory:
Gale had always been a fairly reserved child who never really knew what she wanted. When asked "what do you want to be when you grow up?" She never had an answer. It was never one of the normal silly kid answers, like being president or an astronaut. It was just a confused "I don't know." It always bothered her that she didn't know what she wanted to be.

As a child, Gale lived with her aunt due to her parents passing away in a car accident when she was little. She was very young when it happened, and barely remembers them. Her aunt and uncle were the only parental figures she has any memory of. They had never intended on raising a child, opting to not have kids of their own. They had no idea how to take care of her and while it was a rocky and stressful road, they did end up being the best family she could ask for.

Her aunt's job often resulted in her having to take trips and Gale didn't see her a lot. She was very calm and a good person to talk to if something was bothering Gale. Her uncle worked closer to home and she spent most of her time with him. He was a goofy and silly guy, always ready to make jokes and make her laugh. He was a good guy. He worked in a bakery and often baked things with her at home as well. One of her favorite things to eat were chocolate chip cookies, and she remembered always loving to make them. In fact her favorite memory of them was the first time they made them together, which was the first time they ever baked together.

The tiny eight year old giggled as she crawled onto a stool next to the counter where her uncle stood. "Whatcha doing?" She squeaked at him and tried to peer onto the counter. "Getting stuff ready to make cookies." He answered and smiled at her. "Do you wanna help?' She squeaked again with excitement and nodded. 'Yes please!"
He chuckled and moved to get one of their higher up chairs. "Well you can't help if you can't see, come on." He held his arms open so that he could pick her up and out her on the chair since it was really out of reach for her.

Once on the chair, Gale looked at the counter and tilted her head. He had some stuff done and pretty much all that was left was to put in milk and eggs and stir it. "You can do the milk okay?" He said, handing her a measuring cup and she nodded and poured it in. He put the eggs in next and held up the whisk. "Do you wanna stir it for me?"
He asked and chuckled as she nodded quickly and grabbed at the spoon. He handed it to her and watched as she stirred it. "I'm gonna go get the oven and pan ready, make sure it's all mixed together okay kiddo?" He said softly and moved for a moment to get them ready after she nodded.

He had moved for maybe five seconds before Gale accidentally hit the bowl and sent it crashing to the floor, breaking into pieces. She yelped at the sound and her uncle jumped and turned to look at her and then the mess.
"Now why'd you go and drop it silly goose?" He asked in a joking tone as he walked over, but stopped as she started to sniffle. "I-it slipped... I-I'm s-s-sorry."

"Hey hey no don't cry sweetheart." He said softly and gave her a gentle pat on the shoulder, feeling his heart break at how upset she was. "It's fine." She shook her head at him and frowned sadly at the mess on the floor. "B-but I ruined the c-cookies and now we can't h-have them.." He smiled at her and shrugged. 'Well that may be, but don't worry. How about we get this and you cleaned up and we'll go out for lunch and get some cookies while we're out?"

She nodded and he picked her up and put her on the ground. "You go up to your room and put some clean clothes on and throw these in the laundry room and I'll clean this up okay?" She nodded and ran upstairs while he got a broom to sweep up the biggest pieces of glass.

A little while later the two had left and gone to a nearby diner to eat dinner, which was one of Gale's favorite places to eat. He let her get whatever she wanted and by the time they were halfway done the mishap that afternoon had been forgotten and all was well. They got cookies from the place too, since they made pretty good chocolate chip cookies. The day ended up going pretty well despite the broken bowl.
