Story:
Maya twitched her ears, hearing the loud tossing and snorting of another horse. She raised her head, got to her feet and poked her head out through the opened upper stall door. She glanced worriedly at her neighbour. Jinora was a small filly barely weaned. She was brought to the stables just a few days back, and was giving everyone lots of trouble. In the day, she stubbornly refused to talk to anyone and was sometimes seen weeping in the corner of her stall. At night, she cried out for her mother. Maya knew the truth, that Jinora's dam was killed in a wolf fight and Jinora had barely escaped, her mother sacrificing her life for Jinora.
Maya unlatched her own stall door with her teeth, a technique she learned over the years. She stepped into Jinora's stall, and the filly wailed louder. Snorts and scraping sounds were heard as other horses began to wake up.
"Shh. Dearest, the wolves will not come for you. I'm here." Maya spoke reassuringly, picking some grass from the net and pushing them to the filly. "Here, Jinora. You should eat. The wolves will not come if I go up to them one day and tell them what a great horse you have become." Jinora stopped her wailing, tilting her head. She accepted the grass and chewed slowly. "Now, Jinora," Maya began, her eyes twinkling. "Did I tell you about the time I met wolves? No? So here goes..." The night became silent once more, with the quiet mumbling of Maya, who watched Jinora through the night until the filly fell asleep.
