"In the dim light of Halloween night, a young Kal stood in front of a cauldron
Into it she tossed bones, glitter, and herbs to make a concoction
What is she attempting to make?
This potion might have the dead wake!
A witch of great talent,
One might hope she uses her magic to be gallant!"
"Mom stop narrating, its creepy!" Trixie called over her shoulder as she stood in front of her glowing potion. "Sorry honey," her mom answered and kissed her cheek "Being an actor in the theater gets the best of me sometimes!" Trixie nodded and threw in the last ingredient, a handful of rosemary, and stared at the boiling green goo intensely. "Now remember to focus or the ring isn't going to listen to your wishes!" Trixie waved her paw, the pumpkin ring glistening on her finger, over the surface of the potion and it began to glow. At first dimly but then with greater and greater intensity, Trixie jumped back. "Wow! I can't believe that worked! I mean, I followed the instructions as best as I could but I was still so nervous!" Her mother placed her hand on her shoulder and nodded her congratulations. "Only the fate of the towns people rested in your paws, so it was no pressure really. As guardians of Halloween spirit its important for us to brew potions that bring Halloween spirit to the town." The potion slowly rose up from the cauldron and divided into glowing orange dust that greatly resembled the flickering of fireflies. "Disperso!" Trixie yelled confidently and the dust scattered out the window to light up the night sky. Trixie watched it travel, dance along with the evening breeze over the forest trees and into the closest town. Soon the dust would find its targets and fill them with the magic and wonder of Halloween. She found this town to be particularly beautiful during the evening as the houses reflected the light of the setting sun and the moon rose over the dense forests. "We aren't going to stay here long are we?" Trixie asked, a small glint of hope in her eyes. "Oh honey. You know I love this theater and I know you love your new school and this house and this forest...but Halloween spirit is our responsibility to pass to as many creatures every year as possible. We have to keep moving to new towns to spread the cheer. Its our duty."
Trixie sighed and pictured kids knocking on doors in their adorable little costumes with longing. "I know. I understand mom."

jack was especially excited this year -- he had the best halloween party planned. he'd invited the whole school, and it was going to be the best party of his high school senior year! everyone would be talking about it for years afterwards; that's how much of a blast it was going to be. jack was sure of it.
the finishing touches were all he needed to complete. jack had finished carving and painting pumpkins, stringing lights and streamers all around the house, setting up snacks and drinks, and much more. now he just needed to finish pasting the paper ghosts and spiders along the walls. then everything would be perfect. the others would love the set-up!
as he stepped onto the ladder to apply the last paper spiders to the cieling, a bat flew in through the open window. jack squealed and screeched, huddling on top of the ladder as the bat flew around his head. "get away!" he screamed and swatted at it. unfortunately, he lost balance and fell onto the table the held the snacks. the fall caused the other end of the table to pop up, and the punch bowl flew through the air. before jack could catch the bowl, it landed on top of the stereo and killed the music with a sickening sizzle. the droplets of juice trickled down the wires and cut off all electricity, leaving him in darkness other than the moonlight filtering in through the window.
suddenly, laughter came through the open window. "i got that on video!" a male voice cheered, and other voices murmured congratulations followed by more giggles. the bat flew out the window, but it wasn't an actual bat -- it was a prank set on him by some other high school boys. their laughs soon faded away, and he was left alone to the mess.
jack set his tired head in his hands and began to cry. this was now officially the worst halloween ever.
