Joji is all gangly limbs and indecision.
He’s never felt too comfortable in his own skin, and it shows in the way he’s constantly hunched over as if a burden was dropped on his shoulders the day he hit puberty and never quite eased up. Though he easily has a full head on most viscets in a room, he never quite seems to live up to those inches. Hesitancy dogs his every step; even when he’s sure of a choice, it’s become almost second nature for him to check the decision over, just to be sure. He tells himself he’s just striving for perfection, but considering the fact that his chosen option never feels quite right, he’s not sure what he’s really looking for.
Joji’s friends and family would tell you a different story, however. His mind works faster than what he gives it credit for; he seems to always be a step ahead of the rest when it comes to logic and problem-solving. On uncommon occasions, when he’s so engrossed in coding or tinkering that his insecurities take a backseat, his mind becomes a whirlwind of ideas. There’s an eerie sort of beauty in the way his brain works. {200}
Nubia intimidates Joji like no other viscet, but she practically embodies the short list of creatures he truly admires. As a destitute scholarship winner with way too much brainpower and not enough people skills, he doesn’t know why this taciturn astrophysics professor took a shine to him in his early days of college and practically became his guardian. She never exhibited true partiality to him in the beginning, but one day she decided to pull him into her quiet life and... never quite let go of him.
It started with him being a simple aide to her once he finished her intro class to receive a science credit, but their relationship soon morphed into something akin to mentor and apprentice. His level of math and physics proficiency meant Nubia could bounce ideas off him without having his eyes glaze over, and his frequent visits to her home morphed into her always having a bedroom prepped for his arrival and a key at his disposal.
Nubia’s personality doesn’t really soften around Joji-- forever brusque and to-the-point, she never hesitates to tell him like it is, and oddly enough, Joji finds comfort in the fact. He’s always known exactly what to expect from her.
And yet, it took him so long to realize that her treatment of him was unique, and not at all pitying of his situation. He used to prep for the day when Nubia decided he wasn’t worth her time or her resources.
But, it was only after the first time she gathered him into her arms when he first broke down in front of her despite the countless times he tried to hide his anxieties from her did he register that maybe. Just... maybe.
She didn’t see the same failure he saw whenever he looked into a mirror. {300}
Joji’s never quite understood the mechanics behind a crush, so when he finally developed one on someone else, he didn’t know how to handle it.
He thought he was completely uncaring of romance, both in body and mind, but nooo... His heart had another idea. Min was everything Joji wanted to be: popular, loving to a fault with a friend always hanging off his hip twenty-four-seven... It didn’t seem like this bright, impish, brilliant male ever had to deal with something so banal as loneliness. Joji felt like he should’ve hated someone so obviously likable even with an intelligence that rivaled his own, but most of the time, he just wanted to find out if Min’s chest feathers really were as soft as they looked.
Finding out that Min had his own insecurities to deal with only made Min more nuanced in Joji's eyes. Less like an idol and more like an actual person.
Joji’s fear of children may never abate, but that doesn't stop the many times his thoughts stray to fantasies where the smaller viscet lets Joji lay his head in his lap while the cat-like male strokes Joji behind the ears. Though undeniably innocent, it nonetheless freaks Joji out because he has no idea how to approach Min. Even Nubia’s noticed how Joji’s eyes stray to Min whenever the red male walks into her class. She just finds it amusing how Joji, usually barely phased by another's presence, becomes undeniably flustered whenever Min needs help from (in his words) "the illustrious teacher aide."
Too bad Joji doesn’t realize that Min’s snuck a few peeks at him from time to time. And why not? Min has eyes, and Joji is obviously cute. Min thinks it's a shame Joji is so meek. {293}
