username;; autumn dragon
name;; NCE Agenda Of A Mage - Avallac'h (pronounced "Ah-vah-lahk")
gender;; Stallion
first firefly encounter;; After a second or two of surprise Avallac'h was instantly glued to the little creatures. It was one of those late summer nights when the fireflies really come out and he just spent the better part of the night watching them flit around. His curiosity was rather adorable. After a while they seemed to settle down for the night and he looked lost searching for them. I do believe he was rather heartbroken when they disappeared.

    first firefly encounter;;
      Hyacinth had only just hatched the first time she encountered fireflies - her coat still showed white and she hadn't quite completely figured out her legs yet. Her ever-watchful parents chittered to each other nearby as she fumbled around the cavern they called home. One of the many flickering dots of light that lined the wall seemed to come to life and dance through the air - here one moment, gone the next. Curious, she pranced after it, delighted as it changed course to buzz about her head. It made her wonder just how many of the lights would dance with her!

      She approached the cave wall and stood on her wobbly hind legs, tapping gently with a front hoof to raise a cloud of the flying lights. They hung in the air for a moment, blinking this way and that, before they all settled on her back and face. She trotted back to her parents like this, all ablaze in these stars, and they chuckled and gently blew the bugs away from their daughter, informing her of what they were.

      Every night from then on, she would find her firefly friends and dance with them and watch as they all settled among the stars on her back.

First Firefly Encounter:
Kula trudged tiredly, the sun slowly going down as she searched for somewhere to rest. It was hard when there was so many dangerous things around. Her night would be long once again, full of walking rather then sleeping. Most of her sleeping was done in early morning through early afternoon. Kula had never been in this area, but she had wanted to explore, had seen a few new plants but not much wildlife.
Kula blinked wildly when she suddenly say lights flash around her. Stopping and looking around didn't help since the flickering lights were moving! Kula had never seen anything like this, Nothing so pretty. Her eyes followed a large light that was heading to her, she held still and afraid, for once not wanting to charge at a new life. The light shut off and she felt something on her nose. Snorting in surprise made the bug bolt off and blink rapidly until Kula calmed. What was it? It looked... so strange.. so small. Kula slowly started walking again, humming lowly as more and more light bugs landed on her and stayed, blinked and lighting her up in a beautiful light green. Kula liked these bugs. They were pretty and didn't hurt her.

first firefly encounter;;
The caves we're quieter then usual that night. Soft clatters echoed, but none at such volume as normal. Spark and Mother we're trailing behind the herd, for Sparks was spare and ungainly, and couldn't quite keep up with the herd very efficiently. Thankfully though, they were heading to a commonly known water-pool, so Sparks did not question the slow yet steady pace. "Momma, we need to catch up with the herd! I can walk faster, really! I can!" Sparks attempted to quicken her pace, only to trip and stumble. Mother swiftly put her muzzle under Sparks to allow her to steady herself. "Don't fret little one. We will be alright," Mother cooed, "Besides, there is something I must show you." Mother hastened her step, but not so much as to allow Sparks to fall once again. They turned into a dark tunnel, away from the herd. "Momma, won't we get lost?" Mother brushed her velvet nose against Sparks cheek. "It's alright. I've lived in these tunnels for centuries and have yet to lose my way." This reassured Sparks, so they continued deeper into the dark. "Stand here little one," said Mother, "and be patient." Sparks huffed and stood, getting bored. Patience was most definitely not her strong point. "Momma-" "Hush," Mother cut Sparks off, " Just a second longer my dear. Watch." Sparks obliged and looked around, waiting for something to happen. First, Sparks thought her eye's were playing tricks on here. Did it just get brighter? Yes, it did! Small pinpricks of light started to form around them. Sparks thought it looked like fire, something the humans used that Mother said not to touch. She huddled closer to her dam in fear. "It's alright dear they won't hurt you." Mother cooed. "What are they, Mother?" There were hundreds more lights than there were a moment before. They seemed like stars, the ones that shimmered in the vast night sky, only visible through small holes that had been worn down through time. "They are φωτιά. They come here every night." Sparks was puzzled. "Mother, what does that mean?" Mother chuckled and brought Sparks closer to her legs.
"Firefly my love. It means Firefly."

name;; Althea - greek 'one who brings healing'
gender;; female
first firefly encounter;; the night was ever vast and ever dreary. the patterns of the stars were as constant as the river Althea traveled along. her gaze shifted to the moon that drew its path along the sky, each degree it traversed was another new path she had made. Althea began to grow tired, but her footsteps were in step with her heart beat and she dared not stop, for path she was on was too beautiful to leave. her wanderlust drove her to new edges of the world and she loved the feeling of discovery. but the trail she was breaking began to diverge into two small possibilities, to her left she could continue along the river; follow its twisting, the callousness of the rocks along her hooves, the sharp graze of the droplets against her skin as the water splashed against her. Or she could travel up a small incline to her right, the steepness of it could be dangerous, her hooves could slip on a loose stone, or the new path could prove sound, and the telltale signs of a new adventure could bring her to new heights.

the path she chose was the rocky slope. danger meant nothing to Althea, only a new world could bring her happiness. the path was tricky, unlike anything she had traveled before her but the view of the stars had her in awe. the sky was clear, not a cloud in place to obstruct her view. But as her mind began to relax, and the sky began to dawn, the stars seemed to stay within the sky, and they happened to move. Hercules and Lyra changed into a shape that was unrecognizable. the star Vega changed its location, and seemed to disappear out of sight. as the beginning of dawn started to creep around across the sky, Althea realized that the light was not coming from the sky, it was coming from small bugs that seemed to dance through the air. she nosed at the tiny lives before her, wondering if they would show their beautiful lights to her again. But alas, as the light brightened her world, the firefly's spectacular show seemed to disappear with it. Althea had heard of the bugs who decorated the sky, but had never seen them herself. she was glad that she could experience the beauty of the world around her and decided that she would have to stay for another night among the fireflies. she needed to see the fireflies at full force, and couldn't wait to frolic among their lights.

username;; Wolves of Rain
name;; Simeon
gender;; Stallion
first firefly encounter;;
    Simeon would never tell this story to a friend. This basilik is too proud to mention a fault like this:
    It was the winter solstice. Simeon was a yearling, bright and energetic and proud. He had spent the day celebrating with the herd the longest night of the year - and definitely the coldest. There was no snow in the quiet forest he called home, though a brisk wind wound its way through the trees and rustled the branches. The herd was making its way to the nearby hill, their prime observatory of the stars and the moon on a night like this. Half of the mound of earth was solid rock, preventing the trees from obscuring the brilliant view of the sky.

    Simeon followed behind his mother in the procession of basiliks as they were led through the forest by the lead mare. The sound of cicadas and crickets echoed into the night in an unsteady chorus. Owls gave the occasional bored hoot and far away a coyote keened to the pack. Simeon felt safe among the herd. Their stallion was even bringing up the rear.

    The basiliks filed onto the bare rock face, the sound of hooves slowing as everyone was accounted for and got comfortable. Simeon had found his friend Maple quietly standing next to her mother, and together the two played while they waited for the last of the day's colors to drain from the sky.

    It grew dark quickly, the wind now bitingly cold. Maple and Simeon nuzzled against their mothers for warmth, declining to neglect their game. Each tried to grab the other's ear with their lips when the other wasn't looking. But the darkness and stillness of the night quickly brought Maple to a quiet nap. No matter how many times he nuzzled his friend's ears, all he got was a disinterested flick.

    The rest of the herd was peaceably watching the stars, finding the heavily spotted line that was the Milky Way. They pointed out various constellations and spoke quietly among themselves. Simeon found it difficult to sit still, pawing at the rock or nipping his mothers flank. Anything he did earned him an uncomfortable smack from his mother's tail, much to his distaste.

    Feeling he had nothing else to do, SImeon slipped away from the crowd and back down the rock face. He paid close attention to the sound of his hooves, hoping none would spot him. It appeared none did.

    Back among the trees, Simeon sniffed at the foliage and listened for sounds of movement. He didn't know what he wanted to do, besides getting away from his boring herd members. Had he known he would discover fireflies in such a manner, he may never have left the herd that night. Nonetheless, it only took two fireflies to spook the young stallion. Two yellow lights, flickering on. From what an immature, inexperienced basilik like himself could discern, at perfect height to qualify as a cougar. Simeon jumped back, knowing that being by himself as he was made him the perfect opportunity for an opportunistic predator. He turned around to be greeted by more lights, more eyes, flickering in a strange blinking fashion. Simeon felt cornered and let out a terrified squeal of distress.

    The herd came running, easily able to find the colt in his panicked run through the brush. Bushes caught on his flank and shook when he brushed pass. It felt like cougar's claws, those thorns, and those blinking eyes that sat silently appeared to be kittens hiding in the trees. The stallion was the first to reach him, fully prepared to fight away a threat to his herd. But instead he found a yearling dashing madly through the trees.
    -
    Simeon, of course, knows what fireflies are now. He doesn't admit to his secret trauma with the bugs, but his friends can tell he's scared. His only response is that their eyes remind him too much of horseflies.
