Animal fact;; Did you know that, unlike mammals, both birds and fish have a nucleus within their red blood cells?
Horse Blood ~
Fish Blood ~
Birds BloodAs you can see in the images above, both fish and birds blood has nuclei in the blood cells. Why is this?
Well, in this case, the nuclei help fish and birds survive with lower oxygen levels. The lack of nuclei (aka Enucleated RBC's) in our blood allows us to transfer more oxygen without having to struggle for space with a nucleus. Besides, bird and fish have different respiratory systems and having the nucleus allows them to have a continual flow of blood throughout the system, meaning the nucleus doesn't lower the efficiency of blood flow as it's always moving. In mammals, we have alveoli, which acts as a dead end for the blood, stopping the blood flow momentarily and meaning we need more efficient methods to transport blood through our bodies.
Just a little tidbit of an interesting fact I learned in vet camp.
