"You think you know everything," The female turned away from the male viscet, "It's so dangerous, can't you see? Magic doesn't come from nowhere, it has consequences. You must understand it before you can use it!"
Catalan huffed impatiently, "I know enough. I've been improving fast!"
"Too fast!"
Catalan's eyes narrowed. "You really think I can't do this? I'll prove it!" Drift threw her paws up, her yell of shock cut off as she disappeared.
Catalan smiled smugly then picked up the tiny gasping fish from where Drift had stood. He bought it to eye level to watch it struggle for a moment then waved his other paw over it.
Nothing happened.
He frowned, waving his paw again. Why wasn't it working?
He sprang into action, digging his paw deep into the wet sand until he hit water. Placing the fish into it he watched her swim frantically around, butting against the sandy walls of her prison.
What have I done?Catalan stared numbly at the fish who had been his girlfriend, all the confidence knocked out of him. She was right. He was a fool.
Turning, he set off towards then stopped in horror. He'd almost left without marking where she was. What if he'd lost her?
Quickly gathering several large rocks he piled them by the tiny pool he had made, then loped back toward the den. Avoiding his mother's eyes and questions, he snagged a copper pot and ran back to the beach.
He hadn't needed to worry about marking the spot, after all. As his little hole in the sand came into view so did the viscet crouched over it - his brother Drake was playing with Drift, tossing her from paw to paw, laughing at her panicked flapping.
Catalan thundered across the sand and crashed into his brother, narrowly missing his throat as he snapped at him. Drake shoved him away and bared his teeth in response to Catalan's deep growl. Catalan was furious in his terror. If he'd been later Drift would be gone now.
"MINE!"
Drake shook himself off and sauntered away, trying not to show how winded he was. His little brother would pay for that.
Catalan filled the pot with water and scooped the frightened fish into it, at a loss for what he could do. He had to get help. But how to keep her safe?
He wandered the shore, looking for inspiration. Dipping his paw into the water he draw out a large amount, keeping it together magically. He formed it into a ball and shielded the outside then carefully encouraged Drift into it. A sturdy length of twine made a good cord, and he slung her around his neck.
He would find a way to save her. Catalan gazed across the ocean then threw himself into the water, striking out towards the sun. He was a strong swimmer and an excellent fisher. He would never stop until he found a way to save Drift. No matter what it took.

I'm truly awful at art but I wanted to try and do something for fun. Man did this take a long time. It's an abstract represention of the viscet.

And just because it took me aaaages to do this part and it's so small, here's a closeup of the kelp.
