Zeke has always been the loner type of kalon that stayed on the edges of any social gathering; he never was the one to show himself, especially the more private aspects of his life, to the others in his community. His family abandoned him as a kit on the lie that they'd be taking a trip to a spring area that was far too long of a walk for a kit as young as Zeke to transverse. His mother and elder sister argued that carrying him would be too much on them and their father, an elderly kalon with aching joints, was obviously out of the question. Their neighbor took Zeke in before the two-week journey commenced and watched him for that time. When they didn't return after three weeks he grew desperate. As days bled together he was forced to accept the fact that he had been abandoned by the only people he had ever truly cared for. Not more than a year after this his carer passed away due to health related issues and left Zeke alone in her home.

These loses completely destroyed him, turning him into a cold and reserved individual that dared not interact with the rest of town. He grew envious of the other kits that were fortunate enough to have their families. His bitterness increased and transformed itself into a sickening complex. No one was free from his scornful glares or angry muttering. Over the years this mellowed and, while he did stay in his own company, he did not express the same outward hatred towards others.

When he met Rivers he was skeptical to friendship though he felt a strong connection to him right off the bat. Rivers, he had been told, was also alone without a family. Zeke thought that this could be a bonding piece of sorts between them and that they had something deeply rooted in their heart in common with the other. They became inseparable; the duo was known around town as a trouble-making pair that was surely fused at the hip for all the time they spent with each other.

Their pranks wreaked havoc in their town; during one of their house-egging heists, they were unfortunate enough to be caught by authorities. While they were being interrogated, Zeke overheard an officer threatening to call Rivers' family to inform his parents of what he'd been doing. The realization that he'd been lied to by someone he considered himself to be open and close to was enough for him to become closed off once more. While Rivers was taken home by his parents, Zeke maintained an air of cold irritation. Not even after his release does he indulge in interaction with the fixation of his newly broken friendship.

His trust, tender as it was before, had been violated by the one kalon that Zeke had been foolish enough to lower his guard for after the tragedy of his youth. At first, Rivers tried anything to get his old friend back. He would walk by his den, go along the same paths, eagerly look for him in public, and even try to knock on his door when all else failed. The only words he had, the only ones he could possibly muster were--

"I thought you would be different."
