The Rhodesian Ridgeback originates from South Africa in the country that is now called Zimbabwe. These dogs were bred to help hunters track and kill lions. They where also used as protection in the villages against other people but mostly against wildlife. They where also used for everyday hunting to put food on the table. These dogs are called Rhodesian Ridgebacks because the area that is now called Zimbabwe used to be called Rhodisa and the second half of the name comes from the ridge of fur that follows their spine. What makes this fur stand out against the rest is that is grows in the opposite direction of the rest of the fur on their body. These dogs are known to be strong, tough and aggressive towards outsiders but towards their family they are caring, loving and protective. They make great pets if you are an active person that likes to run, hike or do competitions like agility.
