earth was surely going to be weird, that was alaska's first thought. her second thought was that she had no idea what she was doing. which, if she thought about it, wasn't really wrong.

she had absolutely no idea what she was doing.

she had decided to go to the surface on the eve of her birthday, while the world was quiet, since she had been too restless and eager to see the world above to wait even a day longer.

now that she was here though, she didn't know what to make of it.

the sun (that's what it was called, right? right.) was shining, blazing hot; a bright fire that vaguely reminded her of home but also hurt her eyes. there were also white fluffy puffballs in the sky, and the sky was blue, a really bright, brilliant blue. it didnt hurt her eyes as much, but she still had to look down.

she was much more used to the dark, not this blinding brightness that seeped into everything and, had she not known better, she would've said caused everything to glow. despite that, she found herself in awe at what she was seeing.

the stories from the older hellhares definitely weren't like this. they were vaguely similar, she supposed, but she didn't think the images in her head before she had came could ever hope to compare to this or accurately describe how it looked. no wonder they became so entranced as they recalled their time here; it must have been an enchanting sight to see. she didn't think she could ever even hope to begin to try to describe what she was seeing.

for all she was dazzled by the world around her though, she was also very anxious. a quick look around reminded her that she had no idea where she was, or what the people here were like, or what she could even do here. what she should do here.

it wasn't a welcome revelation.

anxiety and a sense of being very, very small formed in the pit of her stomach as she thought about this more and more. she had come all the way here, to this new world, left everything behind, and for what? she didn't even remember why.

among all the doubt and negativity was a small comfort, however. memories of her family and the people who meant the most to her flooded her mind, and the tension and sinking feeling of being alone slowly eased out of her.

rather than mope and stand there like a fool any longer, alaska squared her shoulders and puffed out her chest. she was a hellhare, not a coward. she could do this. not everyone knew their purpose immediately, she reminded herself. It took time and effort to find it, and she was absolutely determined to find something for her to do here and get the answers she had come for. after all, she had made the journey here; how could she waste this opportunity after all she had done to get to this point?

she wouldn't. she refused to.

after a brief moment of thought, with her goals now clear in her mind and a (albeit cautious) step forward, she quickly took off towards where all the bright lights and loud noises and mumbled voices were coming from, raking her mind for answers to even more questions she hadn't even thought of until now as she went.

she would make the most of this journey and find all her answers and then some, and she refused to do anything else until she did.

cold. dark.

even squinting his heterochromic eyes, the shadows stayed just as prominent. twisting, turning, forming the world all around him. a world unfortunately too dark to quite make out right off the bat. but it wasn’t pitch black, and that’s the part that stood out the most. raising his gaze, artemis was met with an array of tiny dots, much too high for him to reach, though he tried. they looked to glow, to twinkle and blink and sparkle. there were so many, and they reminded the hellhare of the embers that float through the air during a dying fire.

but unlike those red hot lights, the ones above did not seem to fade.

artemis recalled something- tales of a white sphere hanging in the sky. it was what kept earth from being lightless during the nights. supposedly, it had a face. the moon, it was called. even humans regarded it as beautiful, treating it as being more symbolic and lovely than even the fiery sphere that appeared in the mornings. that one was apparently much larger, and much brighter.

disappointment set in as the moon could not be found. perhaps it was shy. perhaps the dark streaks across the sky were obstructing it. branches were more disruptive than artemis had imagined. especially as he spun around, and his face nearly met with the end of one.

like a spear. artemis hadn’t been made aware of that particular danger.

a point to remember for the future, though artemis near instantly lost it as his attention was caught by something else. a circular patch in the sky, where it was almost blue as opposed to the average black. a spot that was lit up, by none other than the moon itself.

“Ooh, they were right, it does have a face! It’s staring right at me! Hello, Moon~!”

a little dance later over how utterly interesting the human world was, and with a skip to his hop, artemis had started on his merry way, traveling through the forest he’d landed in upon traveling to the mortal realm. his eyes had adjusted to the dim lighting, and now everything seemed considerably more clear.

looming trees, much taller than he. little buds on every bush, ready to bloom and create splashes of color everywhere. something to mix with all the green and brown that dominated the land.

artemis had decided it must have been spring. early spring, maybe? things were just coming back to life from the harsh winter; the plants were regrowing, and though most animals still slept, some had awoken from their slumber and were padding around. mostly squirrels, whom had the strangest, fluffiest tails, so contrary to the fur on the rest of their bodies.

now finally, the hellhare stopped observing nature’s wonders and instead looked ahead to something even more fascinating, something man made: a town.

the trees had thinned out as he walked, though artemis only now noticed this. actually, as of this point they were few and far between. they dotted a small field that lead right up to the town ahead. artemis trekked across this new scene, the pads of his feet pressing into the grass with every step. soon the ground felt wet, and artemis had to maneuver his lanky body over a burbling brook, lightly hopping onto a couple stones before landing on the other side of the running water.

and after he made sure he had his footing, he lifted his head, and he saw something new. a different light, created not by the moon- or, the sun’s reflection on the moon? whatever science-y thing was happening there- but by something artificial. this, this was man’s electricity, and it was creating such an odd pattern of illuminated spots. inside every couple windows, in front of porches, or providing guidance for the road.

a noise startled artemis. a low gurgle, and a rumbling feeling in his stomach.
“I believe... I’m a tad bit hungry after my journey.”

he shifted, curious as to whether he would find food in this place. most hopefully; artemis had learned of many human foods, so much array, so many flavors that he wished to indulge in.

but suddenly that thought vanished, and the hellhare was looking to his side, and downwards. at a small child. a human boy. the first human he’d ever met, and by the looks of it, artemis was the first hellhare the kid had ever seen. his eyes were giant, staring in awe. it was a long moment of silence before anyone said anything. the child spoke first, and he sounded much like he was restraining his excitement.

“Are you the easter bunny?” is the question he asked.

the easter bunny? easter? that was a celebration, artemis was pretty sure, but he wasn’t sure what about or what people did during it. was “the easter bunny” a sort of mascot, then?

artemis laughed, a sense of fulfillment hitting him. his first meeting with a human, and he was a little kid who asked if a hellhare was something called the easter bunny. this was a better meeting than artemis had imagined.

when he could finally contain his amusement, he smiled, and crouched to the ground to meet the boy’s eyes. “If that’s who you so wish me to be, then yes, I’ll be your easter bunny.” the child’s grin broke free, spreading across his face. such a genuine, sweet look, it warmed artemis’s heart. “But you may call me Artemis.”

“I’m Alex!”

“Nice to meet you, Alex. What are you doing out so late?”

the conversation they held lasted a while. artemis telling the kid about himself, and alex speaking of so many things. so many random things. facts about himself, what he did the day before, how everyone had a crush on some girl named jenny but alex didn’t quite see why.

it seemed that it wasn’t very affective to ask a child about their world and how it functioned.

they talked, and talked, and talked some more until finally there were rays of light shining over the horizon. at this point, the two had relocated to a spot closer to the kid’s house, where they were seemingly on a bit of hill where they could see over most houses. they sat in the grass, chatting away, but as the sky lightened and became a sort of blue, artemis could only focus on this. the horizon was pink and red and yellow, and this pretty sort of peachy color that was especially nice.

alex watched too, maybe just as amazed. maybe this never got old if the human was interested too. how could it? a sunrise, happening each and every day, just as beautiful. or was it always as vibrant?

a voice called out, breaking artemis from the trance the sky had put him in. it sounded half terrified, half relieved. looking back to the ground, there were two figures, a man and woman, jogging to him. no, jogging to alex, whose name they’d called.

that day, so nearly had artemis been punched out by a man defending his child.

a misunderstanding of course, one that the parents took a long time to accept. a hellhare- a vicious beast, a creature from another world that media depicted as being ruthless and evil. a hellhare, but this one was good willed. this one only wished to get to know earth and its residents. he was merely curious, and wished to make a couple friends along the way.

alex’s parents had allowed for him and artemis to talk, though only under supervision, and the father always looked about ready to attack if need be. but, as fate would have it, that need never arrived.

eventually, alex grew older. he and artemis knew each other better now. somehow, artemis had been welcomed into the family, and now lived like one of their own. they all got older, showed signs of age. artemis still looked the same.

alex in particular looked drastically different. his baby face, nowadays looking much more mature. his tiny limbs, now capable of so much more. he was smarter, too. he knew so many things, apparently from school, a concept of which artemis learned of one day.

artemis had learned just as many things as alex, if not more. the human realm still fascinated him, all these years later. sometimes he still didn’t know how to act in certain situations, but there was always alex there to save him.

fifteen. the little boy that artemis had met that fateful night almost a decade ago was now fifteen.

in all these years, artemis would like to think that he’s made a friend.

alex still calls him the easter bunny, sometimes.
