Second Chance Shelter is a dog and cat rescue where you can come to find a new member of your family. We rescue and rehabilitate dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes so they may have the chance to be placed into a caring home. This boy was given to us but had already lost his leg. We don't know what happened to him unfortunately but he seems extremely scared of loud noises and large metal objects.

How did they loose the leg?: About a year ago, a farmer's herding dog, not being spayed, gave birth to a litter of 5 puppies. The farmer had no use for them, so up for adoption they went. 3 of the pups went to loving homes in the area, but two didn't quite make it. Soon, a strange person came up to the farm, asking if there was any more puppies to adopt. They seemed nice enough, so the farmer gave the remaining 2 to them. Potato and his sibling, his sister, were bundled into the person's truck. They were driven to a far away farm and shoved in a shed. Then Potato and his sister were used as what is called "bait dogs". This is when people teach dogs to hunt and fight by making them attack gentle, harmless dogs and other animals. He and his sister where kept in horrific conditions for several months. The only thing that ever came from the outside was the sound of gunshots. These terrified them both. The only thing that kept them alive was the scraps that the person brought, and their bond. When dawn arrived one morning, not that they could tell, the person opened the door once more. This time he brought with him some other dogs. Potato believed his salvation was at hand. They were let out of their cage and the new dogs circled them, curious. Then the person fired in the air with his gun.

The dogs suddenly lunged and clawed at Potato and his sister. His sister was immediately brought down. Most dogs will to live would've ended the moment they couldn't hear her cries. But his only got stronger. He fought his way out. He was about to bolt out the door, when a dog sunk its jaw into his hind leg. It threw it around and actually managed to rip it completely off. The dogs were now preoccupied with their new meat, and Potato ran out that door, and ran to freedom.

Potato's wounds have now healed, but he is still deathly afraid of large metal objects that remind him of his cage, and loud noises that remind him of that fatal shot.

How did they loose the leg?:
Olive lost his leg from saving his family from an attacker. The attacker had managed to slice Olive's leg off, before Olive gave him a good bite and the attacker fled off, the police soon getting him. Olive had to go to the Vet, and the area where his leg was, had gotten stitched off.

How did they loose the leg?: Charlie being an Anatolian shepherd was used as a herding dog when he was young his owners sold him because he wouldn't respond to the commands, so the whipped him, slapped, and took the end of a gun and knock him in the head with it thinking it would help and then he was given to another family who started to train him for hunting they also soon learned that he didn't learn quick, so they also thought physical punishment would make him learn faster which it didn't. His owners took him out hunting with a few of their friends and one of the friends thought he was a different animal and shot hitting his leg. They took him to the vet and found out that it was really bad so the best thing to do was to amputate it. They gave him up realizing a three legged dog who is terrified of guns and gun shots can't hunt anymore.

How did they loose the leg?: Aristotle was young when he lost his leg. He had originally been bought to be used as a hunting dog, and thus his owners were taking him out to train him. Being unexperienced with training such a dog they pushed Aristotle too hard and had him out in the field to early. The first time he heard a gun go off it spooked him badly enough to send him running, and unfortunately for him he ran straight into another hunters bear trap. This resulted in an open wound and crushed bone which later resulted in an infection and the eventual amputation of the leg. The family, being unable to handle his medical bills eventually had to give him up to SCS.

How did they loose the leg?:
Joey lost his leg because of his old owner, Joey was going to be used as a fight dog but Joey wasent meant to be a fighter and soon his owner found that out and beat him and then Joey managed to escape, he survived out on his own for about 4 days but sense he wasent a fighter he wasent able to get much food so he became very weak, one day he decided to try and cross a freeway but was hit in the back leg, a couple of hours later someone was kind enough to help him and got him to a vet, he survived but lost his leg he is happy he said getting another chance at a forever home

How did they loose the leg?: In an accident. He was a guard dog kept by a wealthy family, they'd let him out at night and put him in the pen for day. He was used to exploring the yard freely and assured everything in it was safe, so when his owners decided to do some roof repairs, he didnt realise stack of roofing sheets was a dangerous place to climb on. The stack collapsed and his left hind leg got hit by sharp metal plates. He is afraid of metal things and lound noises since. His masters gave him all the vet attention he needed, but couldnt keep him because he no longer could be an efficient guard dog.

How did they loose the leg?: he was in the dog fights. One of the best. His owner didn't care for him, didn't even want him, but he thought the new dog could win. He was strong, tough, and didn't EVER give up. Kept fighting, no matter how heated he was.
But that's not always a good thing.
One dark and dreary day, hope lost, people screaming, someone died, so, normal. Boomer's owner, a scruffy man, who hasn't bathed in days, threw him into another crate. The past few days, or hours, (time is weird here, you can't see the sun) he has been moving from crate to crate, fighting harder and harder each time. Boomer landed on his side, skidding until he hit the back of the crate with a CRACK! That was normal too. What wasn't normal, was the way his human put his face on the closed bars. He smiles. His teeth where cracked and crooked and yellow, most of them black, his breath smelled of booze, and it stung Boomer's nose. The human moved his mouth, and made a few scruff noises, then smiled wider, made more noise, and stuck his hand through two of the metal bars. The dog shivered and tensed, waiting for more pain, but only felt a rough hand slide up and down his back.
Boomer didn't like it.
The man went away after that, and Boomer did what he usually did. He slept, and thought, and pushed himself mentally, thinking, "I'm gonna win, I'm gonna make it, I'm gonna be free, I'm gonna eat."
~skip about two hours~
Boomer was starving.
Finally, his human had come for him. The crude man opened the crate, and boomer moved slowly out, tired from fatigue and hunger. Boomer felt his leash catch on his bloodied collar. he didn't really need it, he knew better than to run, he'd seen what happened to the others who had tried to escape. But this was normal routine so, he didn't fight it.
The corridor was longer than usual, and colder, on his bare paws. The cage boomer had usually seen was different now. The spikes where taller, he couldn't see the end in his sight, and didn't bother to look up. He focused more on his thoughts, breath, counted his heart beats. The scruffy man had removed the whole collar, that was also unusual, but he still didn't look back, not until his owner grabbed his neck tuff and dragged his eyes to Boomer. The man mumbled something, and Boomer knew he couldn't lose this fight.
Boomer entered the cage, on the other end was a big, burly German Shepherd. It had just enough scars to tell why it was here too. Boomer knew only one of them was going to make it out.
It turned out he was right, for once, and at the time he really didn't want to be.
The enemy dog had lost it's thought, and was struggling frantically to reach Boomer. When the big men let go of the rabid dog, he tore off, heading straight for Boomer.
This was it.
He wanted it to be over.
No more fighting.
He flopped on his side and closed his eyes, ready for whatever the other dog would do to him, falling into the darkness that surrounded him.
He opened them to light. Bright lights, so bright he cried in pain. No, it wasn't the light, it was his leg. It hurt incredibly. He twisted his head to see the pain he felt was a ghost. He had no leg to feel the pain.
