It was under the glittering wings of an eagle that Rune had attempted to escape. Aquila, the Eagle constellation who is said to have carried Zeus’ thunderbolts and had carried a Trojan boy into the heavens under Zeus’ command; a messenger and guide in the vast starry sky. It was under his guide that Rune made her first, and last, attempt to escape from The Lab.
Rune would often look up to the diamond-shaped constellation from her cold, empty room. The bright twinkling of the star near its head, the great star Altair leads the eagle through the still, dark nights. Sometimes I pray that he would take me under his wings and guide me towards a better life, like his mythological past suggests. A guide through the dark and seemingly endless night, and it was exactly what Rune needed. A decision was made long ago, and with the coming of the darkest night of the month, the new moon, her plan would soon be put into action.

Even at a young age, Rune had developed very little personality of her own. Growing up in a static environment will do that to anyone, but a few defining traits shown through over time. Above anything else, Rune is dedicated to any and all work she is given, even if the work will hurt her in the end. Viewed by those around her as a negative trait, Rune is also very understanding of others. Once the higher ups realized the kind of viscet she was, they ordered a strict watch over Rune, not allowing her compassion get in the way of her work.
As she got older, the harder it became to contain her inner feelings. Acting out would result in punishment, or something worse, so Rune kept to herself; static and cold in nature, unbothered by others and oblivious to their remarks and harsh words. She was a cold, static, unforgiving nature that buried compassion and kindness.
It was when her true feelings were surfacing, unable to hold them down and hide them anymore, when she would snap. She was harsh, sharp in words and blinded by rage, when she would either burst into tears or rarely violent lashes, sometimes both at the same time. But recently, things have been different. After her snap of emotions, it is getting harder for her to bury them again and pretend everything is normal. Rather, they bubble just below the surface, and Rune knows a great change is coming when it finally spills over.
Her decision was finalized as the new moon rose, and the swelling of pent up emotions had reached its peak. (272)
The taste of warm salty tears came as no surprise to Rune as she stared longingly out her small, cold room on the far end of The Lab. She has lived here for as long as she can remember, being raised by tall viscets in lab coats. They offered no compassion or warmth, and only pushed forward to finish their research. It is here where she grew up, with no knowledge of a world outside this small stone building. It was no surprise to her when her loneliness and longing for something real would bubble over and something in her would snap. However, Rune has grown used to this by now, and has learned to bury the useless emotions and be what the researchers wanted her to be; a cold, static, loyal researcher who serves no other purpose than to lead the investigation team.
One particular mission stirred something within her that she never knew she had; compassion. This was just another mission, she was told, but something just didn’t seem right this time around. She had collected information about a just hatched viscetling, baring a rare mutation that neither parents had to pass on. Naturally, The Lab wanted to test the vicetling in attempt to understand how and why these mutations happen. It was Rune’s job to gather information and plan a retrieval mission. She selected a top viscet from the retrieval team, passed on the information in a red-leather journal, and sent him on his way to bring in the viscetling.
Merely days after, emotions were bubbling far to close to the edge once again, but this time Rune was unable to push them down as she had been so use to doing until now. Something within her snapped, and she looked through her small window to the starry sky for something.
An answer? A calling? Whatever it was, it was pulling her towards her decision.
Rune waited until the next new moon. She snuck out the window, using the moonless night as her cover. She looked to the sky once again, but this time it was different; this time it felt
real. The starry wings of Aquila pointed her in a new direction, and she ran. However, as quiet as she was, her escape did not go unnoticed by the higher ups, even anticipated by some.
She stumbled, unused to the soil and grass beneath her feet, but hurried forward.
To where? she wondered,
somewhere I belong. Blinded by adrenaline, her eyes were fogged with her bubbling emotions, but Rune quickly snapped back to reality when a red-hot pain shot through her body. She toppled over, unbalanced by the stabbing pain in her hind leg. Frantically looking towards the source, her eyes widened when she saw what had happened.
In her attempt to get as far away as quickly as possible, she failed to see the trap that she had stepped into. Her whole body shook as she tried to dislodge the trap from her hind leg, but luck was not on her side today. “Ah, what do we have here?” A deep voice rumbled from a distance, and Rune shot up to see a viscet bearing a lab coat striding closer to her. She opened her mouth to snap an answer, but she had no words; her mouth was dry, and her head throbbed a dull pain. The other viscet chuckled as he got closer, and Rune could only bare her teeth in response.
He said something, but Rune couldn’t hear it. Her heart was beating in her ears, and her vision was ebbing into darkness. The last thing she remembers is the male looming over her, a look of disappointment mixed with a smirk across his face.

Consciousness slowly returned to her, eyes focusing to an all too familiar setting. She tried to sit up, but the sharp pain in her leg stopped her from moving further. “Rune” the all-knowing familiar voice made her ears flatten, she turned towards the door on the far end of the room. “You let your feelings get the best of you. You disobeyed orders and turned on us. This is the only thing you have ever known, why do you run from your home?” The viscet from before commented lowly, his voice laced with venom.
Rune bore her teeth to him and retorted immediately, “This is no home to me. Not now, not ever.” Another chuckle from the doorway, then a sharp reply, “After all we’ve done for you, to betray up now-“ “What has this place ever done for me?!” Rune all but shouted back, her fur beginning to bristle. The researcher’s eyes narrowed, but he stepped aside and spoke, “Leave. You have 24 hours to get as far away from here as possible. If we find you after that, then, you know,” he ran a claw across his throat, and Rune held her breath. Her muscles tensed, unable to move. Her body started to shake.
“Leave!” the researcher snarled. Rune’s muscles moved on their own, bolting through the doorway. She soon realized that she could no longer stand on her injured leg, and was left to walk and run on all fours. She ran, not stopping until soil was beneath her feet once again. Her eyes burned, not used to direct sunlight, and she waited several moments for her eyes to get used to the new experience.
She looked up, and even through it was early morning, she could still see the dim sparkling of stars from the night before. Finding her guide in the sky, Rune continued to move forward under the starry wings of an eagle. (941)
