Username: Creative
Name: Harlequin Opal
Gender: Female (Nonbinary, prefers female)
Gem: Harlequin Opal
Weapon OR armor location: Armor, along tail and/or arms perhaps
One Extra:
Dawn was so far about the only thing that hadn't yet broken that night. The battlefield lay in utter ruins, shattered fragments of gems catching the light produced by gem-tech, casting faint rainbows onto the still-thick cloud of smoke that floated close to the ground, not yet having dispersed from the sheer amount of gems that had been poofed. It felt as though this war had been raging on for eons already, but it had only been a couple thousand years at most. Even so, the casualties on each side were steep and continued to steadily grow day by day. With every new death, efforts were redoubled, each shattered gem only serving to spur on each side even more in their want to avenge their fallen gemkind.

One side already had the clear advantage though, being able to mass produce soldiers or whatever else it was that was needed in an effort to turn the tides of war in their favor. The Diamonds were able to create gems as needed, even if it was a strain on resources to create viable and powerful gems, already they were producing more defective runts than usual due to the lack of proper resources and time to develop. But warriors didn't need shifting abilities or any sort of power other than being a wall of muscle, able to absorb damage and still stay up and ready to fight. They weren't the real cause of the strain. No, the healers were the more difficult to produce, requiring the need for stable and powerful magic and needing the time to stay underground longer as they matured. But they were worth it, able to heal cracked gems so even a major setback such as that would only put them out of the fight temporarily rather than for good.

But since they could heal broken gems that hadn't yet shattered, and cost so many resources and so much time to make, they were deemed one of the most important gems that were created for the battle. They were to be protected, and each healer gem warranted at least one bodyguard in order to ensure their safety. A strong gem that could effectively serve as a shield to soak up any enemy fire so that their assigned healer could get away safely.

In studying fusions in a new light, trying to artificially create their own superior same-gem fusions that could outcompete the cross-gem fusions of their enemy's factions, a special set of gems were created as a test batch. Unlike other freshly created gems, they were formed as a fusion right from the outset, emerging from their hole with anywhere from two to six gems already fused together. Though unlike regular fusions, they were not separate gems fused into one body, the new artificial fusions were simply always one, with only one conscious and one thought process, just with many gems adding to their power.

Unlike experiments in trying to find a way to create an artificial cross-gem fusion using gems that had been poofed in the war (still proving to be unviable), this same-fusion from newborn gems was significantly more stable even if they were only marginally larger than the average regular, non-fused gem. It was from these very experiments in artificial same-gem fusion that Harlequin Opal's batch was created, and from that batch that Harlequin Opal Facet 9, was assigned to her Emerald to protect her and follow her orders above all others.

Finally the sun rose over the distant horizon, showing the full tragedy that the previous night had undergone as the light pierced the low hanging smoke. One of Blue Diamond's scouting parties--a small force of Ametrines and Spinets-- had been ambushed as they were on their way to one of the outposts controlled by the Diamonds. They'd been on a mission collecting information about where the leader of this futile rebellion was supposedly holed up, but that information would never be relayed. All that was left of the encounter were fragments that were beginning to shine in the new day's sun.

When the scouting party hadn't yet returned, a party of Aquamarine soldiers were sent to find them and recover them, though now that the group had arrived, they saw there was nothing truly to recover after all. Among the party sent was also an Emerald healer, so that any gem who needed it could be healed even if they were cracked, though what laid before her now was beyond her abilities. Harlequin Opal escorted this party, though her primary function was to serve and protect the Emerald, even at the cost of the Aquamarines. But as the warriors went off to secure the location so they could begin gathering the broken fragments of the fallen gems, she could only hope she was strong enough of a gem, of a fusion, to protect her Emerald. She didn't realize she was shaking until she felt a paw on her arm and heard a soft voice say her name with enough concern to pull her from her quickly darkening thoughts.

Harlequin Opal shook herself to free her mind from the worries and concerns of her objective, and countered Emerald's worried look with a reassuring smile, begin to assure her that she was fine. Before she could even begin her sentence though, one of the Aquamarine warriors they had travelled with cut her off, shoving the two of them to the ground just before a light green boomerang sliced through the air with a faint whine, flying through right where they had been standing.

The rebels, it had to be. Any thoughts of trying to reassure Emerald were lost as Harlequin Opal's objective took precedence. With a bright light, her armor formed around her, ready to aid her in her fight as she jumped to her feet to face her attacker head on. This was what she was built for, to protect the Emerald she had been assigned. This was her purpose, the only purpose she had ever known. And she would not fail it. Her tail lashed back and forth violently as she growled, staring down the enemy emerging from the foliage of this planet. A Tourmaline stepped through, catching the boomerang effortlessly as it flew back towards her.

Tourmaline. A cross-gem fusion. Harlequin Opal stepped forward. This was why she was created as an artificial fusion, to be able to take on another fusion one-on-one. But this Tourmaline was out of luck, this wasn't just a fight between them, even if the other Aquamarine gems had been poofed or even shattered, one of them remained. It would be two against one, this was no contest.

At least that was what Harlequin Opal thought until she heard the sound of quickly retreated footsteps, and a cry of "I won't die for some stupid fusion!" She didn't dare turn her back on Tourmaline to see the retreating form of the cowardly Aquamarine. Unfit for battle, unable to perform the task for which it was made, it was a disgrace to the Diamonds. No doubt, it would be dealt with when it arrived back at the main base, what a fool.

With the Aquamarine's retreat, Harlequin Opal was forced to rethink her strategy in a rush. With backup, this would have been a simple fight. She would only have to keep the fusion occupied, serving as her punching bag, as Aquamarine took her out from behind. While she was suited for defense, Aquamarines were created for offense. But without that gem here... She would have to find a way to attack the fusion, dodge her attacks, and defend Emerald all on her own. If this battle went on too long, the chances of Emerald being hurt only increased... She was built as a tank, built to take blows and serve as the main focus of enemy attack as her Emerald escaped. Tourmalines were the opposite, they were speedy, quick as lightning and their attacks were strong.

In a flash, Tourmaline had gotten behind Harlequin Opal and as she was spinning around to defend Emerald, all she heard was Emerald's scream. She turned just in time to see Emerald's gem fall to the ground, embedding itself slightly in the dirt.

In that moment, it was as if the only thing Harlequin Opal could see was Emerald's gem. Nothing else registered, not even her own voice as she let out a guttural anguished yell, so sound and animalistic that the Tourmaline froze just long enough for Harlequin Opal to attack. Without even thinking, she grabbed Tourmaline's gems and ripped them from her shoulders, forcing the fusion to destabilize and poof.

It took her a few moments to calm herself, to come back down from the furious rage and realize with shame she had failed her sole mission. She hadn't been able to protect Emerald. In desperation, she stomped down the emotions welling up because of her failure. This was not the time to dwell on it. It was doubtful the Tourmaline was alone, she needed to get Emerald's gem away from here. Not letting go of the two gems that had made up Tourmaline, she gingerly picked up Emerald's. She had to made sure that Emerald got back to safety. Even if she had failed to protect Emerald, she could still make sure she could get back to the main base, where she could reform in peace and--

Ships were rising into the air, coming from where she new the base to be. They were leaving. They were leaving her here, they were leaving Emerald here. That coward gem, she must have twisted the story to cause a full retreat. Or maybe no one was simply willing to wait for a fusion bodyguard.

Not a moment was wasted as Harlequin Opal broke into a sprint, running as fast as she could force her physical form, silently pleading with the gems in the base to leave her just one ship, just one tiny ship, just for Emerald to make it to safety. Just one ship was all she needed, just one ship, to protect Emerald, to make sure Emerald would make it off this planet safely. They couldn't leave her stranded here, they couldn't leave the two of them here, they couldn't.

They could.

The final ship was long gone by the time Harlequin Opal arrived in the hangar. Not a gem was left in the base, not a ship was left for them to use to follow. Gone. They were all gone. And with their departure came the realization that she had well and truly failed her mission, her very purpose, the sole reason she was created. What was the purpose of her very existence if she couldn't secure the safety of a single gem, the only purpose she was ever given? She had one mission, just one. Protect Emerald.

Not only could she not protect Emerald from being poofed, but she couldn't even perform one of the most basic tasks of getting her back to the base in time for evacuation.

Useless. Useless useless useless USELESS worthless imitation of an abomination not even fit for the most basic of purposes, unfit to even be able to say they were a creation of the Diamond Empire, a failure in experimentation and a disappointment to herself and the Diamonds! She fell to the floor, dropping two of them gems to punch the tiles of the floor with all her might, over and over again, until all that was left was cracks in the floor, as numerous as the broken shards of gems that she had seen that morning. They were abandoned, left behind, and she and Emerald would never be able to find them again, left to defend an empty base that no one would ever return to. As good as shattered when the rebels inevitably found them and none of them cared.

With a frustrated and shameful cry, Harlequin Opal sat bolt upright in a bed in a room she couldn't remember. Still groggy and plagued by the fresh memories of what she could swear had only happened moments before, she leaped from the bed searching frantically for the gemstone that she swore she could still feel the weight of in her paws, panic rising quicker and quicker the longer she looked, searching the house and finally throwing open a door that lead to a grassy fenced in yard. "Emerald..." She breathed, letting her tense shoulders relax at the sight of her Emerald sitting, safe and whole, by a pond.

The other gem looked up from feeding the fish, offering Harlequin Opal a fond smile as she approached and sat beside her, leaning heavily on the smaller gem, nuzzling into her shoulder. Finally able to let herself calm down from the panic, she could only laugh in relief at the realization it was just a memory. A memory that had plagued her dreams as she slept. Perhaps this is why gems weren't made for sleep, she mused.

"My Emerald..." Her voice cracked with relief, with love and sincerity. She was safe. It'd been only the shadow of her memory plaguing her. Events of the long distant past, of when they decided to forsake the Diamonds' Empire as they had done to them. No longer forced to carry out an objective, to be efficient or else shattered, having no other purpose than to serve and be useful in some way.

"You know there's no need to address me so formally anymore. We're not under the Diamond's reign; we're equals now." Emerald's voice was soft as she rested her chin on Harlequin Opal's head. Emerald was so caring, it was hard to believe she had been created in a time of war for the fate of this odd planet. Created to help take it over, even. Though quiet, she had never wanted that as her purpose, though was too afraid to speak up or to defect to the rebellion. At least until she was presented with the perfect opportunity.

"My Dearest Emerald, I don't think I could ever not refer to you as such," Harlequin Opal muttered into the other's fur.

The two sat together in silence, Harlequin Opal let her tail wrap around Emerald's as they watched the fish swim in circles and greedily eat the food offered to them. It was not until the sun was setting on the horizon, painting the sky with beautiful colors that Harlequin Opal spoke again, repeating the very same words she had said so long ago when Emerald asked her to come with her to join the rebels. "My Emerald, I'd follow you wherever you desire. You are my priority, and you are my love."

With a soft giggle at the recognition of the words, Emerald repeated back the response she gave lifetimes ago as well, "You have my eternal gratitude, and likewise, my eternal love, My Harlequin Opal."
