ﬡᗩᕈ ᕈᒪᗩᑕᙓplip. plip. plip.i shook my head, the feeling of liquid dripping on my head waking me up. groaning, my vision cleared to reveal i was laying on a dirty, crusty couch littered with food crumbs, Nyquil, and various strange stains. ah, home.
yawning and stretching, i stood up. walking to the fridge to get a snack, i noticed a crumpled and stained paper pinned to the fridge. tearing it off, it read:
Pay up, Bascus, or get out. This is your final warning.i sighed, crumpling the paper off and throwing it into the trash. as if on cue, i heard a loud pounding at the door.
grumbling, i rushed to the door and unlocked it.
outside stood a
peach and creme colored kalon impatiently tapping her paw.
"BASCUS!" she shouted at me. i cringed, knowing what was about to happen. "Bascus, I gave you 24 hours to get out of here! You haven't paid your rent for six whole months, and all I've been getting is excuses. Now, out!"
"bu-" i started.
"NOW!"
harrumphing, i grabbed my torn wallet off the messy counter and stormed off, glaring at the other kalon the whole time. walking away from the old motel, i stuck my tongue out at her.
───
heavy-hearted, i walked along the pavement lit by the city sunset. where was i to live? where was i to sleep? that was what i had really needed- a nap.
then, i spotted a neon sign, advertising "FREE WIFI!" it belonged to a small brown building, titled simply "restaurant."
i walked in. looking around, it appeared to be empty, spare a few kalons. trotting up to the
bartender, i sat down on the leathery seat.
"You okay, kid?" he asked me, polishing a tall glass.
"yeahh.." i sighed, putting my elbow on the countertop. "my landlord just kicked me out of the motel. i don't know where to sleep."
the bartender shook his head sadly. "Well, kid, I can't help you- I'd be fired if I let you sleep here."
the kalon
next to me took a sip of her drink and grinned. "hey, if u wanna sleep somewhere, go check the bakery kitchen n tell em nikki sencha."
i brightened up a bit. "ah, thanks!!"
───
walking into the kitchen, i immediately noticed the pleasant aroma of cooking food. wandering torwards the bakery section, i dodged a few rushing chefs on the way.
i saw a
black and white kalon polishing the bakery glass.
"um, sir?" i asked. he looked up sharply at me. "uh... are you the baker?"
he nodded, waving over
another kalon.
"Hi!! Im Carson- this is Caspian. Hes, uh.... he cant talk, but Ill do it for him."
caspian signed something, and carson looked at me and explained, "He wants to know what you want from him."
"uh, nikki sent me," i stuttered. "i need somewhere to sleep."
caspian put on an annoyed look and signed to carson.
"Uh, he doesnt like this Nikki you talk about..."
"what?"
"He wants you to get out."
caspian pointed to the door. apparently he and nikki thought very differently about any sort of friendship they had.
head down, i thanked carson and caspian, and caspian was kind enough to give me a pastry.
───
munching on the crisp pastry, i sighed. i was walking along the waterway when i heard a faint call. it appeared to come from a bridge, not too far away from where i was. glancing around me, i walked a little faster torwards it.
under the stone bridge lay a
kalon with dark spots, on top of several ragged blankets. he cackled, and waved for me to come over.
sitting beside him, i looked at him quizzically. "yes?"
he laughed once more. "kid, if you need a place to sleep, i got all the room right here."
i looked at him, estatic. even if he was homeless, who could care? i had a place to sleep!
i gasped. "thank you sir!"
he raised an eyebrow. "well, ive never been called 'sir' before, but thank you."
i laid down on the mat, releasing a huge, billowing cloud of dust and fell fast asleep.
───
"hey kid, did i ever tell you about the time i fended off an alligator?"
i groaned. "please, i want to sleep..."
he had been pestering me for the past half hour, talking while i had tried to fall asleep. now, the mat felt less like heaven and more like a filthy homeless person's bug-ridden blanket under a mouldy bridge.
just as i was about to drift back into sleep, he said "okay, sorry kid... but it was so cool! i..." he went on.
my eyes flew open and i stood up. "sir, i have to go, thank you anyways." i tore off the piece i bit from the pastry and handed the rest to him. his eyes widened and he nodded in thanks, as i walked away briskly.
───
it felt like i had lost all hope. it was now night, and i had somehow wandered into a meadow full of buzzing electric bugs. sighing, i sat down to think in the peace and quiet.
how could i ever fall asleep?
how could i ever fall asleep?
how could i everrr....
───
my head shot up, alarmed. what?
it was morning, and my thoughts of the previous day rampaged through my head. i must have fallen asleep in the field!
jumping up, i did a little happy dance. i did it! i found a place to sleep!
turned out, i didn't need anything special to sleep except peace and quiet. who knew it was the opposite of needing other peoples' help...
