Buttermilk B302 - Orphan

Postby sprig » Fri Oct 11, 2019 9:04 am

While our patrol cat Mooney was out on his rounds a few nights ago, he came across a little calf hiding in some berry bushes just outside of our fences near the back side of Lavender Meadows. He managed to coax it out and lead it back to the barns where he was examined by our on call doctor. Luckily for us (and him), the little guy was perfectly healthy, just hungry, cold and tired. We gave him some food and wrapped him in one of our blankets, but we can't keep him here much longer due to shortage of space! Will you help give this sweet little guy a home?

A horrid wind howled outside the toppling barn, threatening its weakened foundations that had been long ago abandoned. There was no light and the cold of the winter storm clung to the air within. Nestled in between shambled hay bales and shivering on the packed dirt floor lay a small calf; his mother had left some days ago to find something green underneath the snow for her baby but hadn't returned, he'd lost hope...

Heavy and tired lids closed over clover colored eyes, dull with hunger and exhaustion and despair. It seemed as though the storm would never stop and he was alone now, he missed his mother, he missed the green pastures of long grass they used to graze in before they were forced to escape when mean men tried to take him from her. He missed the light and the sun and all that seemed too gone now, replaced by an underdeveloped winter coat and protruding ribs and the emptiness.

He felt like he was floating, sunk into the darkness and ready to sleep forever.

However, a gust of wind shoved the loosely chained barn door open letting in the pounding force of freezing air and snow flurries. Though amongst the snow and defying the wind was a figure standing in the door way. The calf could do nothing but lay helpless and scared, too tired to move anything aside from his eyes. The figure leaned all its weight against the door, pushing hard against father winter to latch it shut from the inside. It approached the calf slowly, crouching low to the ground with one arm extended in front of it and the other tucking a blanket at its side.

----

Eleanor cooed softly as she approached the tiny figure of the calf, letting the blanket unfold and fall lightly onto its back. She tucked it in best she could, tears forming at the brims of her eyes realizing the calf's state. She'd heard from some nearby farmers that wailing had been heard a couple days prior, but none had bothered to approach figuring it was a dying animal that they couldn't fill their hands with. The calf almost seemed grateful for the shield against the cold, nuzzling into the old quilt. Though its energy picked up a bit as Eleanor pulled from a pocket a plastic baggy of pear slices. She offered some to the calf who took them eagerly, bringing a smile to her face. Though she appeared saddened once more, pulling from her other jacket pocket a collar. The calf immediately recognized its scent as his mother's and began emitting pitiful moos of distress. Eleanor clipped the collar around his soft yet thin neck and wrapped him tight in the blanket, picking the calf up with eagerness to brave the storm and bring him home.

---

The calf fell silent as he was lifted, thankful to be warm, heartbroken he would never see his mother, but glad to be on his way to a better place.

"To be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved."

---

Huckleberry Acres was quite the drive away. However, upon hearing that an orphan calf had been discovered, the drive proved to be worth it, even if nothing was to come out of the visit to Lavender Meadows, where the orphan calf was being held for the time being. Several others were going to try and give the calf a home, without a doubt. Being another competitor wouldn't hurt much.

No company was brought along for the journey up to Lavender Meadows, just the owner of Huckleberry Acres herself. She thought about bringing one of her heifers with her to help with the taming, but she realized that if she did manage to walk away with the orphan in her arms, that he wouldn't be introduced to the heifers right away. Instead, the calf would undergo some care away from the heifers and slowly be introduced to them over time. This was just an extra precaution for the Acres, of course. This didn't need to be done, but it might make the calf more comfortable if Huckleberry Acres was chosen to be his new home. But first, the owner would have to introduce herself to the calf.

A few of the Lavender Meadows staff walked the owner of Huckleberry Acres up to the barn where the orphan calf was being held. As they approached the barn, the owner thanked the few staff members and slowly walked through the barn, looking through each of the stalls until she eventually found herself looking in at a calf, who she assumed was the orphan. He was a cute little guy with green eyes and a few spots of brown on his face. Other than that, he was primarily white. Over the calf, was a green blanket. The owner gave a small chuckle, which seemed to get the calf's attention, as he looked her way, but didn't approach her.

"It looks like green is your signature color." She spoke softly as she continued to observe the calf. "Fits you well."

The owner of Huckleberry Acres slowly unlocked the stall, and carefully opened the door so she could be with the calf. Of course, she made sure to watch all of the calf's signals to make sure that she wasn't spooking him. That's the last thing she wanted.

"My name is Arizona." She whispered, giving a small smile to the calf as she closed the stall, then slowly kneeling down in front of the calf. "I'm here to introduce myself to you, and perhaps be your friend if you'll allow me to." She whispered to him.

"I even a bottle for you." Arizona said as she carefully revealed a bottle she brought for the calf. That seemed to interest him a bit, as his ears perked forward and looked at her. Warily, the calf moved toward her. Earning his trust was entirely possible. Arizona just had to go slow. Slow and steady wins the race.

Prompt:

“Buttermilk Babies Farm.” Just reading the name of her own home tugged at her heart. Briar hadn’t been here long, but she was already eager to settle down with a calf of her own. She had always had a natural instinct towards motherly behavior, and often would find herself overstepping boundaries and acting as the mother for the other Buttermilks on the farm. Some of the other heifers accepted her help and guidance, but everyone at one time or another wished that she would stop butting in to everybody’s business.

When news broke about an orphaned calf found at a neighboring farm, Lavender Meadows, it spread like wildfire through the Buttermilk Babies herd. Not only were the heifers excited over the thought of having a potential new baby running around, but now there would be a little one for Briar to look after and she could stop mothering the adults. When the news of the orphan finally reached the motherly heifer, she immediately ran out the door, not thinking anything through, just focused on this bundle of joy that soon could be all hers.

Briar sprinted the entire way to Lavender Meadows. A black cat ran out and planted himself directly in her path as to prevent her from plowing her way though the entire property. She gasped for air as she attempted to speak to the feline. “BABY” she choked out before she needed to inhale again. “Where’s…. BABY?”

The black cat stared at her for a moment before turning around and trotting off towards one of the barns, remaining eerily silent as he did. Briar didn’t care if he thought she was strange or crazy, and pranced along behind him. She felt as though her heart was going to burst with excitement over this little calf she hadn’t even met yet. The cat let Briar into the barn, and immediately she downshifted into a much calmer state of mind. She peered into a cozy little corner of a stall, and her soft pink eyes met a set of sparkling green ones. Slowly, a smile begin to creep over her face.

“He’s the most precious thing I’ve ever seen” Briar swooned to the cat. The heifer then immediately barged into the stall with the nervous little baby, Mooney the cat unable to stop her. She shifted some of the straw and bedding around to make things more comfortable, and then plopped herself down right beside the calf. She began to lick and groom him as his real mother would, and eventually nestled in close to him to cuddle. She spoke softly to the calf until she watched him fall asleep. Briar shifted her gaze without moving over to Mooney, and whispered softly as to not wake the calf, “I think he’ll feel right at home with me”. Her gaze wandered back over to the tiny calf, and she gave him a few more licks before closing her eyes herself. After their nap, they would head to his new home.

Prompt:

On a cold and wintery night in an old, creaky barn in lavender acres lay a small calf, this calf was named sakurai. His mother had abandoned him just hours before. Shivering from the cold with only a hay stack and a blanket to keep him warm Sakurai lay there thinking to himself why he had been abandoned? it wasn't his fault no, he was so perfect no one could not want him, but then why did his mother abandon him? he couldn't even remember what she looked like.

Hours later just as he was dozing off he heard the soft clip clop of hooves knocking against the barn door. It opened and cold air rushed in causing Sakurai to curl tighter into a ball. He looked up and was startled to see a tall Black figure standing in the door way. He whimpered and curled even tighter if that was possible. He then heard a sweet soft melody. "Hush little baby don't say a word, Cheri's gonna buy you a mocking bird, and if that mocking bird don't sing, Cheri's gonna buy you a diamond ring…."

Sakurai decided the sweet soft melody came from the motherly figure that wasn't so scary anymore. As she plodded closer closing the door behind her she walked closer and sakurai could see beneath her blanket and the heavy satchel she was carrying she had an intricate sakura tree design on her soft Brown coat. He giggled. His name was Sakurai and she had sakura's on her! what a coinkydink! he was so lost in his thoughts he didn't notice that she had nudged an apple towards him, He jumped when the apple touched him but gobbled it up hungrily. "you're coming home with me" the motherly figure said and nudged sakurai to his feet and led him out the barn into the cold night.
The end.

Please make sure you are reading the quoted portion of writing at the top of the post, as that is the base for the prompt! The calf is already in the care of the faculty at Lavender Meadows and the prompt writing should reflect that ^^
