Who is their best friend?:Interviewer: “Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, it will really help out in the class I am taking. I am just doing a small interview about what friendship is in everyone’s mind. Now may I ask, who is your best friend?”
Anya: “My best friend? Oh, that’s easy!
Ashling!”
I: “Can you to describe her”
A: “Describe my best friend? Well. I can’t. I have never seen her before so I don’t have any idea what she looks like. I lost my vision before I could even walk so I don’t remember ever seeing anything actually. I can try using what I know about her. She has told me she has black fur with white on it and her eyes are green. But I guess not like a forest green but rather a minty or spring green. I don’t know what either of those looks like so I just kinda make up what they make look like in my head.”
I: “Since you can’t describe her physically, why don’t you describe her personality?”
A: “Well she is the kindest viscet I have ever met. She always has this softness to her voice when she speaks that just calms everyone who listens. I don’t think I have ever heard her raise her voice and she is the first to rush to your side to ask if you are ok. That’s how I met her. I was sitting on the ground and she came over to make sure I was ok. She knows a lot of other viscets and is friendly to everyone, even that grouchy old viscet on the corner who just cannot seem to enjoy a day. She is the type of viscet to put others first in her mind and take care of herself later. I guess I envy that in her, the ability to help others when they really need it.”
I: “What does she do with you?”
A: “She helps me with the most ordinary things sometimes. From picking leaves from my fur after we go for a walk, all the way to helping me learn my way around a new place. She taught me how to survive and live mostly on my own in case she isn’t around. She mostly keeps me company though. It gets awful lonely, not being able to see things sometimes. But she helps me with that too. She taught me to listen. To listen to the birds and the insects. To the wind and the waves when she takes me to the beach. She taught me how to just sit and enjoy the environment around me.”
I: “Last question, what does Ashling mean to you?”
A: “Mean to me? Well I would have to say she is family to me. She helps me enjoy the world and I have no idea where I would be without her. She’s my best friend”
