Maya had been lying on her stomach in bed that night, reading under the gleam of a flashlight. For the past few hours, everything had seemed normal. Then an even brighter light that was colored pink and blue shone through her open window, and she squinted outside. "Is it an alien?" Maya asked herself aloud.
The multi-colored light flickered, and it took her a moment to realize that it was floating in the air. With wide eyes, she leaned out of her window, glancing up and down. "It's magic," she gasped and covered her mouth with a paw.
Instead of doing anything rationally, Maya snatched it out of the air and brought it into her room. Without even touching it, the window closed and the lantern was trapped in there -- or maybe it was trapping her there. Suddenly, she became afraid and began shaking.
"Don't be afraid, little one," a gentle voice spoke from the lantern, and Maya frowned. Is it... talking to me? she wondered, and her thoughts were answered almost immediately. "No, lanterns can't talk. But I can."
At first, the statement didn't clear things up. Then one of the doors to the lantern creaked open, and a firefly emerged. "I come from a magical place and so do you. I'm here to grant you your powers," it explained.
Maya's heart started beating so hard it felt like it could burst out of her chest at that moment! Her breathing came fast and quick with excitement, for her dreams were coming true. She had always felt like she never belonged, and the only friends she came to know were fictional ones in books.
Sensing her thoughts again, the firefly chuckled and flew towards her head. Maya went cross-eyed looking at it before it landed on her forehead and disappeared from her vision.
Abruptly, tingles flowed through Maya's body. She turned towards the mirror on her vanity and watched as her eyes began to change color, gleaming pink and blue. Eventually, the colors spread throughout her body and changed various aspects. Her hair, her paw pads, her shine, and even her tongue changed in the span of a few seconds. The walls around her reflected purple from the mix of colors.
At the same time, she began to float towards the ceiling and she hit her head. "Ouch!" Maya exclaimed before slapping a paw to her mouth and hoping her foster parents hadn't heard her.
"I have a lot to teach you, little one," the firefly laughed again.
