It had been a perfect day to fly kites in the park, one of those days where the wind whipped just right and the trees danced along with it. Naturally Alizeh had taken to the outdoors like a racehorse out of the starting gate, small legs thumping against the spring mud and freshly sprouted grass, hands peeking out from beneath the sleeves of an overly large raincoat and gripping tight to the frame of her kite. The best way to the park was through the woods, a shortcut all the neighbourhood kids knew, only small trails from children's feet cutting through the forest.
Alizeh had ran the path like a mountain goat time and time again in the past, had it memorized and nearly mapped out in her brain, so maybe she was a little careless in her steps, like most children are.
/Oof/.
A stray rock, probably kicked up by one of her friends on their own reckless run, found its way under her heel. The world spun and moved in colourful blurs as the small girl went head first tumbling down the hillside. Luckily, the bank was moss padded and ended in a shallow ravine, which her body soon met with a loud thump and a grumble of pain.
The tiny frame sat up, hair a wild mess with foliage tangled in the strands and mud smears over rosy skin like war paint. Big eyes searched the area rapidly, looking for the familiar trail. Instead, hey landed on a strange rocky opening across from her, a few feet away at the other side of the ravine. A child's curiosity was a powerful thing, and had her legs moving on their own accord towards it, gumboots splashing through puddles and then hitting a hard surface. The heels of her shoes clicked and echoed as she passed through the entrance and came out on the other side, into the wide open space of a cavern.
The air was damp, wet in the way it was after a heavy rain, one that soaked the earth to its very core and struck life back into all wilting things. The smell of moss and damp soil stuck heavy in the confined space, unable to escape and contrasting against the metallic scent of stone. Against the walls glowed transparent stones that seemed to reflect light back into the dim cave. Alizeh’s kite hit the floor with a soft clatter, and was forgotten there for a very long time, for she had found a new adventure that would spark her interest for years to come
