shimmering’sand has always looked up to hidden’quarry and vira! shimmering’sand has to admit that, as a kit, he was excited to first come to the alliance and discover another blind cat in an important position with others supporting and helping him out as needed. the older tom was always confident and sure of himself. it gave the then-kitten a lot of hope that the cats around him would help him out in a way that he hadn’t yet experienced. and if shimmering’sand could almost always be found only a few taillengths away from hidden’quarry’s paws at all times? well, it may have earned him the affectionate nickname- and temporary shield name- of “duckling”, but it still wasn’t anyone’s business but his own!

hidden’quarry never truly minds shimmering’sand hanging around anyways. at first he claimed to find it annoying, but it grew clear as time went on that he had come to care for shimmering’sand like a little brother in some ways. he always seemed to brighten just a bit more every time the trainees were taken to the healers’ den and he got to teach the very enthusiastic shimmering’sand. the squire was never great at medicine or healing, but he had come to admire the cats in his alliance who were, in part due to all the scrapes and scratches of his that they had patiently tended to even when hidden’quarry was unavailable to deal with his brother.

so of course, that was part of why shimmering’sand always idolized him as a kit- he was always what shimmering’sand aspired to be when he grew up. but there was another, probably sillier, reason… he also just thought vira was really cool! he was fascinated by her the first time he met her, as any cat would be given that bearded dragons are certainly not common in their area, let alone seen as pets or friends. her scales always had the most interesting texture to them, too, one that he loves to feel when he needed comfort. that’s a service vira never seemed to mind giving to him, perhaps being even more helpful to him than to her owner. this interest was only encouraged by her extremely mischievous personality, and soon, when there was some sort of prank involving vira, shimmering’sand could be found close to the chaos as well. he gets a little starry-eyed whenever his older brother approaches him, even if he is storming over to tell him off, and his sheer enthusiasm and joy for whatever stupid prank he and vira had just pulled is enough to calm hidden’quarry down at least a little and allow him to respect the effort taken.

not that shimmering’sand was ever worried about consequences from hidden’quarry, even as he’s grown older and become a full member of the alliance with more responsibilities. the older tom is always much gentler towards him, and far less stern that he ever is dealing with other members of the alliance or even with his own pet. that fact always certainly helps shimmering’sand’s admiration of him- in his eyes, hidden’quarry has done and seems capable of doing no wrong.
