The world was a beautiful place. The place where I saw the good in everyone, everything. I knew even the cruelest cats had good in them, deep down. But oh, how naïve I was. For my foolish beliefs led me to my untimely death. And I can never get back those years of life I missed. My only wish had been to bring those around me happiness. But now all I had given them was despair. A message that the world was not a beautiful place, but a brutal one.
I was a young warrior, my fur a soft gray with white accents, fluffy and soft. I carried mackerel stripes and a positive attitude. I was ready to take on the world. Though I had often found myself chasing the butterflies rather than hunting the rabbit in the brush. I was scolded and given punishment, but that didn’t stop me from doing the things I desired. Sure I could hunt prey just fine… usually, anyways. Sometimes though, I preferred to watch the leaves flutter to the ground in the sunlight, than follow the scent trail of a rodent.

Prompt: [1252 words]"Hello? I believe you should be able to hear me now. I've been learning my way around here and I think we should have a stable connection now", said a staticy, disembodied voice. You turn your head around, trying to find the source of the voice. The voice lets out a mrrow of laughter, the sound harsh on your ears- no, your brain. "Relax, we aren't in the same realm but we can still communicate. It's been so long since I've been able to talk to someone else besides that wretched Whisper", hisses the voice, the quality getting slightly better, but the hiss still making your pelt prickle with unease and pain. You ask who she is and she just laughs. You ask where she came from and she sighs, silent for only a moment. "You won't know its name, it's long gone. I can't even remember its name its been so long..." She seems sadden by this revelation, but carries on none the less.
"Why don't I tell you a tale of an old medic from my clan? It was quite the popular cautionary tale, kits would gather in the elder's burrow to hear the story. It's like uhm, posthumous fame! You'll like my version more though, I know all the detail", she gloats. You could practically hear the smile in her voice. "After all, I would know my own life better than anyone else." This sends a shiver down your spine, but you agree anyways, having a feeling that this... spirit? Wouldn't leave before recounting her tale. "Excellent! Now, where to start?"
Rain drops tapped against the grass above, offering a gentle thrumming to the ceiling of the clan. A young orange molly sprinted into the tunnels, soaking wet with loosely collected herbs in her jaws. She passed clanmates as her paws left the ground of the tunnels muddy and sticky. "Watch where you're going, Flame! You're going to get us wet!" one of the cats she brushed passed hissed. "Sorry Spark!" the apprentice yowled, turning sharply towards her destination.
Her flank heaved as her paw steps slowed, now padding into a spacious den. Moss and lichens brushed over her pelt as she stepped in, walking quickly to her mentor. "I see the rain beat you this time" remarked the old molly in the den, turning her attention away from a coughing cat. "But I got the Catmint like you asked! See?" Flame mews, dropping the wet leaves to the floor. Her mentor huffs and picks up the herbs, giving them to the sick cat. "Eat these" she grows curtly before exiting the den. She flicks her tail as she leaves, calling Flame to follow.
"So uhm, how did I do?" Flame mews, trying to keep up with the taller cat. Her mentor doesn't respond, instead taking Flame down the winding tunnels, passing multiple dens. They pass the nursery hall, peering into the small dens with queens and their litters. It had been a recent order to separate the queens by litter ever since the sickness started to spread, but it seemed to be working okay. "Oh, Lynx! I can check up on the queens today if-" Flame was cut off with a snarl from her mentor, and she trudged along behind in silence, pelt still damp.
"I was so eager to impress when I was young" Flame sighed. She seemed genuinely saddened by this, and you give her some awkward words of encouragement. "Oh, I don't need anymore empty words. I've heard plenty of those during and after my life" she growls. You sit there awkwardly, shuffling your paws in the sand. You ask her if there's more to the story. "Of course there is!" Flame hisses. "The pause was for dramatic effect and to signify a time skip! Do you not tell stories in your clan, or are you just so dense you can't-" She growls, her mumbling growing faint as if she was stomping off before growing louder again, more calm. "Anyways, as I was saying..."
Large white paws padded silently down the tunnel, following the glimmering gemstones down. The tunnel was winding and uneven, one of the few remaining natural tunnels left in in the clan. No one was allowed to dig it out to make the floor even or the walls the same width, it was sacred. Or so they said. The white molly knew what was up ahead, and the idea of it made her sick to her stomach and excited all the same. She turned the corner and in front of her was a room with a pool in the center. The walls of the cave glittered with small gems and geodes poking out. Above was a skylight, pouring moonlight into the room. It was gorgeous.
A lithe, black tom sat in the room, facing away from the entrance. The molly took another step forward, but the black cat's ears swiveled towards the sound and he opened his eyes, turning around to face her. "Oh, Lynx! It's just you" the tom sighed, his prickling pelt smoothing out. Lynx held her tongue and claws, taking gentle steps forwards. She hid her rage well.
"Can I ask you something? Leader to medic?" the tom asked, a glimmer of nervousness in his eyes. "Do you feel a sense of dread tonight? I can barely hear it but I feel as though our ancestors want to give us a warning tonight, but I'm not quite sure what..." The leader closed his eyes, sighing. That was all Lynx needed. In a flash she lunged on top of him, pinning him down easily under her massive size. "Lynx! What are you doing?" The black tom yowled. "Something I should have done a long time ago."
"On the edge of your seat, huh?" Flame purrs. You almost ask if Lynx killed that cat, but bite your tongue, not wanting to be reprimanded like last time you asked a question. "Lynx didn't end up killing him. Some tunneler noticed the racket and came in at the last second. That's how she and I were different. I wasn't as foolish- I never relied on strength or size or whatever nonsense. My mind was just as a sharp as my claws" Flame says, smiling.
"The rest isn't as important as they used to say. 'Oh, Flame did this and Flame did that!' they would cry, 'Oh Flame killed the new leader!', they gnashed their teeth, they bemoaned! I only did what Lynx tried to do, It's not all that serious. If he had another head he'd only have half a brain" Flame growled. You sit there, waiting for Flame to finish her rant about this so called 'Owl' guy. You can gather they did not have the best of relationships. Eventually Flame settles down, sighing. "Well, I must thank you for listening. At least I can rest easy now knowing that a dead story can live on once again. There's so much more that I can tell you but it's not important anymore. I've still got my eyes on the same cat, but my old apprentice can rest easy. I've found a new way out that doesn't involve her" Flame snarls.
Flame leaves without warning, either due to her loosing connection or that she simply grew bored. You start to head back to camp, not sure what to think about this 'Flame' character. Just thinking about her makes your paws itch and your fur stand on end. Maybe this story shouldn't be revived.
