Onyx sat under the old weeping willow by the lake, watching the flowers wave in the wind. She had lived by this lake for as long as she could remember before her upwalkers left her behind. They had move many seasons ago, so she already grown accustomed to the freezing cold of leaf bare and the sweltering heat of green-leaf, but the sting of being left behind hurt more than any frostbite or sunburn she would endure.

Just a few moons after she was abandoned when she was still young, she met another cat. The cat was lanky and completely white, and spoke in a light dignified voice. Onyx knew her as Queenie, and she visited Onyx almost every day. The two had grown close in a short amount of time, and cared for each other. Whenever Queenie came, Onyx hunted for her, shared tongues with her, and searched her long pelt for ticks. One day Queenie arrived with a sad look in her eyes, and explained to Onyx that her owners were moving, and she must leave as well. ``You can't leave!``, Onyx cried, ``Please, don't leave me Queenie...``



The white she-cat never came back after that day, and for many moons after Onyx was filled with anger, attacking any cats she found from that point on. She hated being alone, but could not bare anymore heartbreak. She grew cold and distant, content with her den of reeds and moss, and the fields of flowers. Deep down she knew she was in the wrong, as it was not Queenie's fault that she had to leave, and for a long time Onyx regretted her actions after Queenie had left.

Onyx stood up from her spot under the weeping willow and limped over to her nest, careful not to put much weight on her back paw which was injured in her last battle. Her bones were old, her paws ached, and all she wished for was company. She thought back onto her times with Queenie and the kindness she shared with the white she-cat. For the first time since that night before the she-cat left, Onyx felt pride in what she did for the she-cat. ``Queenie couldn't leave her upwalkers behind, it wasn't right of me to be angered with her...``, she thought sorrowfully. She wished she could go back in time and re-live those days with her, when she could run for days on end and when she was not afraid to show kindness to others. She silently made a vow to herself that day that the next cat she met she would show them the same kindness she showed Queenie, and that flicker of pride within her sparked a long lost fire. For the first time in many seasons, she felt like the cat she used to be.
