Hunter's Woods #185

Postby clouds-move-on » Mon Mar 16, 2020 11:41 am

Main thread
To adopt you must either have a founder and be level 1. Or, you can adopt this one as your founder!

Fluffy butt + blue was requested.

This cat has a turbulent relationship with a member of their family - what finally happens that ends this conflict? However, one requirement - neither character can die in the story, but the conflict must somehow be resolved by the end. You have a minimum of 200 words and a maximum of 700 words - this ends at 9 pm edt today. I can extend per request.

name: Caspian
prompt:

    Ciar was his brother.

Not by blood, of course; the two looked like day and night, dark and light. Just by looking at the two it could easily be inferred they did not share the same blood.
And yet, they were adopted; they were brothers, they were family. Raised by Alani, who was... interesting, to say the least; she was never the best mother, seemingly never truly having maternal instincts - her ulterior motives were to shape them to be the best they could to serve their ruler.
And thus the two had always competed to do just that.

This is where the two's turbulent relationship stemmed from.
It was always attempting to outdo the other; from Ciar becoming better in combat to Caspian in stealth and in charisma. It was clear and evident that Alani preferred Ciar, which Caspian had loathed with all his being.
    He wanted to beat Ciar.
He wanted to prove that he was better than his brother.
    "At any cost."

    "Weak as ever, Casp?"
Caspian had raised himself from the ground, shaking the dust off his skin and fur, glaring at his brother who's expression was one of triumph; he retorted, "I wouldn't call it weak. I almost beat you."
"You'll never be as good as I am, Casp," Ciar leered, with a grin that Caspian had always despised, "Give it up. Alani prefers me already. One day I will get even our ruler's honor... I will prove myself to be the most loyal."
"Give it up, Ciar- just because you're stronger and more skilled at fighting... doesn't mean you'll get Alev's approval," he snapped back at the darker tomcat, seething with anger. "And stop calling me that."
"I think it would be better to quit before you're ahead, brother," Ciar looked back at the blue rosetted tomcat before he left. "You'll never be better, Casp."

The two grew to be truly loyal members of Vallis; Alani had been proud, but particularly favoring Ciar- something Caspian wanted to make right, something Caspian aimed for.
He wanted nothing but to prove his loyalty to the high-ranks, and to prove himself to his mother.

    "You killed her."

He stood before the lake that stretched so far; it held the stars in its reflection, rippling peacefully.
Normally it would have been a much more peaceful night.

Today... was not a peaceful day.

    "Why?"

Ciar looked to the side, pain in his gaze. "She betrayed Alev. She was with another betrayer... she had to be punished - but I went too far..."
Why did he feel so hollow? He expected to feel sadness, anger at his brother - for killing the cat who had raised them - but he felt nothing.
    No, he felt something.

"What are we going to do now?" Caspian responded, not looking at his brother.
    "We?"
"We're brothers. Of course it's we."

He felt the turbulent relationship they had... calm. The winds had died down; the source defeated - and seemingly, his goals all changed and shifted around... he felt different.
And for once... there was no competition.

    name: Cleo
    prompt:

Her sharp eyes followed Timber around the clearing, a scowl tugging at her jaw. Her claws sunk into the ground, and then she tugged them out, shaking the dirt from her paws with an annoyed growl.

She didn't know what it was, or why she was acting this way. Something was just so infuriating about her foster brother. They'd grown up together, sure, but she didn't have any reason to call him a sibling. Their mother always seemed to care about him more, and sometimes it seemed like he was her biological kit, while Cleo and her sister were the adopted ones.

The thing was, they got along pretty well; they didn't really argue. Well, he never argued. She, on the other hand, had a quick temper and was easily provoked; one moment, she could be perfectly calm and collected, while the next, she could be snapping at a startled groupmate, or more often so, seething silently while she plastered a smile onto her face. She never meant to hurt anyone, and she never truly hated any cat, but sometimes she could get so frustrated - especially at Timber.

Watching him now, she felt the anger rising again. Timber's friend, Moth, was praising him on his recent win in their moss-ball game. There was no need to rub it in; they all knew his strong build and wide paws gave him an advantage.

Her paws itched for action, and as her aunt left the clearing, she rose to her paws, stepping forward. "Let's have a fight, shall we?" she announced, a smirk tugging at her lips. "I'm in the mood for something exciting." She hoped that through a few spars, she could let out the bottled up anger.

Her sister seemed disinterested; she had never been one for physical activity. Moth, who had the most energy but was the smallest among them, instead prodded Timber. "Come on, Timber! I wanna see you fight," she squeaked encouragingly.

The stocky kit stepped forward, uncertain. "I'm not so sure-"

"Don't worry, I'll go easy on you," Cleo chuckled, flexing her paws. Finally, a worthy opponent; she found herself sizing up to him, noting his heavy paws and wide shoulders. She hadn't expected to fight him, but maybe this was just what she needed.

Carefully, she circled him, eyes locked with his. She waited for a moment, and then landed a heavy blow on his side, making him stumble. He regained his footing, blinking in surprise; he clearly hadn't expected such a sudden attack, and this made Cleo grin.

She went in again, this time aiming for his paws, hoping to knock him down - but he was ready, and when he fell, he caught hold of her paw and brought her down with him, quickly pinning her down with a firm grip. Stunned, she tried to squirm free, but there was no escape.

"Woo! Go Timber!" cheered Moth, bouncing on her paws from the side.

Timber stepped aside, letting Cleo get back to her paws. She scowled, expecting some haughty reply, but she was instead greeted by a gentle smile and a friendly shoulder bump. "Good spar," he offered, nodding. "You're really quick! Maybe you can teach me something next time."

Startled, Cleo blinked. "Oh- of course," she stammered, delighted.

She shifted her weight, feeling a little odd, watching as he padded away. Her frustration was gone, replaced by a lighthearted feeling she couldn't quite describe. She found herself lifting her chin, calling out -

"Hey, you fought really well... maybe I have something to learn from you, too."

All the leads led her to this new town. This new town, full of life and love and... memories.

Yet, she's never stepped foot in here.

Great Corvid... She wanted to turn back. She wanted to turn back so badly, but she had to know. Had to see him at least once.

What was her twin getting up to these days?

It didn't take long to flag down a citizen. The molly, clutching a basket of fruit, was quick with a warm, overtly familiar smile at first, but did a double-take at her appearance. Baffled, the town molly could only blink as her smile fell.

Christina scowled. "Can you direct me to the home of Christopher Novak?"

"Do you mean Bastion Novak... the mayor?" The molly asked uncertainly. She pointed down the path. "His home is down the path."

Christina could feel the citizen's eyes burning her back as she walked away.

An open sign hung almost cheerily on the door frame. She pushed the door open, and there he was. Gods, it really was that easy.

The tom Chris was speaking to paused to look at her arrival, but Chris. Chris looked at her like she was a ghost.

"Chris. I want to speak with you."

    ---—---—---—---—---—

Her request led them to his back office. Chris was silent as he greedily took in her form, eyes shining suspiciously in the morning light. He hadn't said a word since she walked through his doors.

All at once, she felt the wind knock out of her sails. All the things she bottled up, wanted to scream at him, flowed away. She clenched her fist. What was the point? He didn't do any of the things she thought he did, for all those years. He didn't kill their family.

She managed a wry laugh. "I spend months trying to find any trace of you, and where do I find you? Galavanting in the woods under a new name. And Bastion, of all names."

"...I loved that fairytale as much as you did."

"Could've fooled me. You vowed to be worlds better than 'Bastion the Brave," She snorted. "Though I don't think that Bastion would be caught dead in such a stuffy job as mayor of a town."

"Things change. I've learned a lot over the years. And I've learned quite a bit in the past two minutes." His eyes never left hers.

"Hah, yeah. Bet it's such a kicker, having the cat you least like in the family actually survive."

"You still think that." His voice was resigned. Chris's eyes never left her, so she saw the way his expression crumpled.

"You've never given me a reason to believe otherwise."

Good gods, she hated doing this. Hated, even now, looking so vulnerable to him. He always knew how to make her feel small, with his biting words, and now—

Her thoughts were shocked into silence when Chris grasped her paws. He sunk to his knees. Put her paws to his lips. Oh gods.

He was crying. Had she ever seen him cry?

"I thought you died with everyone," His soft voice broke, and oh gods— "Christina, they wouldn't even let me bury their bodies."

    Her breath hitched. "Chris—"

"Please. I've done so little to be a brother to you, but please. Give me a sign that you're real."

Even now, despite the hate she harbored in her heart for him. She could never deny Chris.

Her embrace was crushing. "I'm here, Chris. I'm here. I'm here."

    ---—---—---—---—---—

She couldn't say how long they stayed like that. Could have been minutes. Hours. Days.

She pulled away from his shoulder. Gods, he looked so lost.

"Chris. I'm not staying." I can't stay. "I'm having a hard time believing it myself, but I'm glad you've made a home here. But... the love you have for our family's late memory permeates this place. And all I see are ghosts."

    "Christina, please—"

The paw she put on his cheek settled his voice. His larger paw engulfed hers as she wiped away yet another trail of tears.

Her smile was pinched, but it was there. Always there. "You've already lost me once, Chris. You won't lose me again."
