Prompt:
Melody is an optimistic heifer, always looking for the best in a situation and in another cow. She would make friends wherever she went and would do whatever she needed to please them. However, there was a time, when she had just reached adulthood, when she felt alone. During this time, she was surrounded by friends, making sure everyone felt welcome. She would invite everyone to be friends with her but she rarely let others into her inner circle. It was this circle that would experience her lows as well as her highs.
The heifer struggled to let other cows in, wanting to always be seen as this happy-go-lucky cow and worried that if she voiced her concerns and fears, she’d be cast aside and these cows would no longer want to be her friends. So, she didn’t invite anyone into her circle that wasn’t there from calfhood for a long time. She chose to not share anything personal about herself with any cow, choosing to let them believe that she just was never sad or angry – or anything that could portray herself in a negative light.
These views of hers did not change for a long time. She kept cows at a distance and treasured those who she couldn’t hide from, the ones who got to know her before her fears had built up. She had built a large circle of friends but never had she felt more unknown and alone – nobody trying to get to know her more than they already did. This just gave Melody’s fears more validation and she tried to cut off even more cows, even those who she had known in calfhood. It wasn’t until she met Nyx that things began to change.
When Melody and Nyx met, Nyx was very headstrong and didn’t take no for an answer and this threw Melody off. She just kept trying to avoid the unusual heifer who would just keep following her around. Melody tried to push away Nyx, shut down any personal questions and give very abrupt answers if she had to answer a question. So, she found Nyx leading the conversations, talking about herself (anything and everything). The heifer could not avoid Nyx so she was forced to listen to her, but after a while, she realised that she enjoyed listening to the tales.
Melody slowly lowered her walls, letting the heifer in and letting her know the real Melody. She got to know the Melody who forced herself to be friends with anyone to hide her fears of the public: the one who feared nobody like her. Nyx became like an extension of Melody, always being at the others side. Melody found herself being made to open up and share her real self with others, dropping her personal. All the while, Melody acted as an anchor for Nyx, reining in the heifer when she was going too far and helping her remain grounded.
After this, Melody truly didn’t feel alone as she knew she would always have a friend within the herd.
