After the successful first route, Mystique began to feel confident in her ability to help out. She moved up to the first space behind the search and rescue mounts. Now, she was extremely alert and focused, knowing what she had to listen and look out for.
The group came to a small path covered in fresh hoofprints and knew that there had to be at least one horse at the end. The group set off down the path, single file, but were stopped halfway by a large downed tree. Almost all of the horses had no prior jumping training, let alone jumping in a tight, confined area. Mystique knew it was going to be up to her to get to the other side of the tree.
The other horses in the group backed up and moved off to the side of the trail as far as they could so Mystique and I could make our way up to the tree. I let her stop and take a look at the tree for a moment, knowing she would understand what she had to do. She took a quick look at the tree and began backing up. Once she felt she was at a good distance, she took off at full speed toward the tree. She jumped the tree with ease and proudly took a moment to prance around. After her prideful display, I got off of her back, tied her reins to a branch on the tree, and with the help of some of the search and rescue experts moved the tree out of the way.
Once the tree was moved, the group continued on toward the end of the path. At the end, we found an entire herd of horses needing to be rescued. I was so proud of Mystique. I dismounted to go check out the other horses and help put leads on them. Just before we started heading back with this group of horses, I grabbed some sugar cubes out of my bag and made sure Mystique knew how proud I was of her.
