PROMPT 2
Username: angel furby
Clan: orchidclan
Word count: 689 words
Prompt:

don’t let wolftail’s old age fool you, he’s got the nose of a bloodhound! he can track out just about anything, though his nose works best for finding herbs.

before he joined orchidclan, he was part of a rogue group that lived near the two-leg place on orchidclan’s east border. it was a small group of cats, only about four or five. as a young cat in this group, wolftail was taught the art of medicine and healing by his father. he grew up helping his father take care of the other cats in the group, and any cats they might meet passing by- such as lost kittypets or traveling loners.

one special thing he was taught by his father was how to track down any herb he needed, in only a few minutes. this was a very important skill to possess; they didn’t live where much wildlife was found, it was rare that they would be able to find fresh herbs. of course, they stored any they found, but they still found themselves constantly short of the ones they needed.

so, as a solution to this, long before wolftail was born, his father began teaching himself to track herbs better. he’d familiarize himself with the smell so he would be able to find any growth within the nooks and crannies of the two-leg place.

as soon as wolftail opened his eyes, his father knew he was meant to become a healer for their group. as a kit he was gentle, and kind. he showed no interest in playing the rough games the others did. he was taught everything he needed to know about healing from a young age; as soon as he was weaned from his mother he began accompanying his father outside of their home to search for herbs. it wasn’t long before he was just as skilled as his father.

it didn’t take wolftail long to notice how easily his father could find herbs- it was as if he could find anything he needed within the twitch of a whisker. wolftail begged and begged every day, “how do you do it?” he asked, “teach me! i want to know how too!” he would cry. however, despite his begging, he was always told the same thing: “not yet, son. i will teach you when the time is right.” wolftail always thought that was a dumb answer, that he probably was just lucky and didn’t want him to know it. but, he put up with it. he waited, hoping one day his father would pass down the skills to him. he would be patient until the time came- if it ever did.

after years of helping his father with herb and healing duties, he eventually retired to live his last few years as an elder. wolftail took over his job as a fulltime healer, it was now his job to look after the clan and his father- and hopefully, with that job, he would learn some of those tracking skills!

one day, wolftail’s father met up with him outside the camp. he said to wolftail, “now that you’re a full healer i’ll teach you how to track, it’s finally your time to learn.” he always thought it was funny his father treated it so seriously as if it were a family secret that must be passed down only to those who qualify. over the next few moons, he learned how to track just as well as his father. though these skills were mostly used to find herbs, it was great for finding prey as well- even if he only hunted in emergencies.
as for passing these skills on, he knows his father wouldn’t want him to teach them to every cat he met, for whatever reason. however, he isn’t getting much use out of them living as an elder now that he’s in orchidclan. having kits or a mate never interested him, orchidclan is now his closest thing to family. he decided to pass his skills onto sweetwhisker, orchidclan’s healer. she would be able to use them to benefit the clan and teach them to her future apprentice.

RESPONSE TO 2020 SPRING EVENT PROMPT 002

Postby tula! » Wed May 13, 2020 1:53 pm

    PROMPT 2

    username: tula!
clan: tribe of the red trees

    prompt:

    Alledowaya wrote:
Who's the best tracker in your clan? Do they have any known tactics or do they hide their skills from the rest of your cats?

Minda and Hakan, once named Beetlenose and Carneliancurl, are the only members of the tribe that come from a clan (besides Skye, who born into The Tribe of Endless Waters, but just cannot remember anything before her time in the Red Trees). In fact, the idea of wild cats living together was entirely new (and absurd) to Milo until that old Ben from the ranch explained it to him. Therefore, Hakan and Minda are the most experienced cats in the Red Trees. They were trained officially in a distant clan, so of course their skills would be superior. Not to mention they are the oldest of the cats— but that does not mean they are necessarily the wisest.

The two bicker constantly. Hakan thinks Minda bossy, and Minda thinks him stubborn and idiotic. Neither cats are wrong. But to Milo and the others, it seems their arguments get sillier and sillier each time. It's actually ridiculous. Sometimes they fight over the dumbest things. Like how to properly dry moss, or how to swim. They once, on an explore patrol, argued over which way to go, and it turned out to be the same way. Oh, if those two could just stop raising their voices and take a moment to listen to each other! But both are some of the most prideful cats you'll meet; never wanting to back down, admit that they're wrong, or live up to their mistakes. The way the younger cats see it, only one of them has the right to be prideful.

Hakan is sloppy. He's often mistaken, but refuses to admit it, so he pins the blame on Minda. The truth is, he's insecure to the point where he will do anything or say anything to get people to think what he wants them to think about him. But he clings onto Minda like a leech. Minda, on the other hand, she has her faults, but she is far more talented. Like a panther when she stalks her pray, she's focused. Ready. She is a strong. smart, capable molly. You see, Minda was actually born into the clan she and Hakan are from. She just has it in her blood. In fact, you can trace her heritage up: all of her kin were successful. Her great grandfather was leader once, and her uncle was the deputy. She comes from a noble line, and certainly lives up to her family name.

Hakan joined the clan later. He was a young, poor scrappy rogue looking for some food. He cheated his way up through the ranks like a snake and earned his warrior name. But one day, Hakan did something no one can even talk about. He committed a crime so unspeakable, and not only his place in the clan was threatened, but his life. Hakan had charmed Minda with his good looks and his lies, and when the time came to run, he had already sunk his claws so deep into her heart he was able to convince her to run off with him. He said they'd create a life together. He said they'd see the world together. So Minda, she just can't help but get dragged into it with him. It's unfortunate.

So, Minda is the only one with the heritage, the training, and the focus to be considered the most talented warrior in the Red Trees, but she is especially praised for her tracking skills. In fact, it's always been a sort of thing of hers— she's as cold as ice and can hunt you down in an instant. Her nose is sharp, and her mind is sharper. She doesn't bother to explain herself to the fools that surround her, but she does plan on passing these skills to her kits one day when they are old enough to begin training.

Prompt: "Who's the best tracker in your clan? Do they have any known tactics or do they hide their skills from the rest of your cats?"
Turtle who sleeps in Pond creeped along the forest floor, careful not to accidentally snap any twigs. As he walked over a small rise he cought the scent of deer, he opened his mouth, tasting the air for different scents. He could tell that it was coming from the east, and there was... blood? In the scent as well. He quickly followed the smell, walking over the next rise and finding an injured deer, he could tell that it was a doe and saw three fawns in the area. He quickly trotted back to camp and told Ivy That Grows up Walls, and she sent him back out with Leaf in the Wind to get more information. Later when his Clan asked him how he found it, he replied with a smile, "A tracker never reveals their secrets."

Yolkpaw scented the air, pulling in the various scents of the forest and the shore. Although he's a medicine cat apprentice, Cloverflame wanted to test his abilities and try to have him find obscure herbs that he hid early. Faintly, the young tom found the scent of his mentor and followed it. The trail was faint and soon it led him to a dead end. Yolkpaw frowned and parted his mouth, drinking in the scents again. The bush in front of him didn't have any herbs, but the fact that the scent trail stopped here was suspicious. He leaned closer.

Within the branches, on the ground, was a large sycamore leaf covering a mound. Yolkpaw parted the branches and pulled it out with a claw, dragging out death berries. He quickly wiped his claws on the ground and tried to get rid of the poison, knowing that this was a trick from Cloverflame. Yolkpaw remembered that his mentor specifically asked for leaves, and these sycamore tree leaves were useless for cats. He turned away from the bush and scented the air, but it was masked by the poison from the death berries.

Getting frustrated, Yolkpaw wrinkled his nose and snorted. Closing his eyes, he tried to remember all of the familiar scents in the den and focused on them as he went in alphabetical order. Alder... no. Burdock... no. Catmint... yes! Recognition struck, and his eyes flashed into the trees. Another little trick! The catmint was still technically in the sycamore leaves, but not on the ground as anyone would expect. Yolkpaw shot into the tree and stood on a branch, sniffing each of the large, green leaves. One of them was dripping with honey.

Yolkpaw pulled the leaf off of the branch and turned it over, finding the catmint. He grinned and put it in his mouth, not caring that the honey was dripping onto his fur. He headed down the tree and sprinted back into camp, eager to show Cloverflame.

winter is the best tracker in duskclan, she grew up a loner (unlike many of the other cats) and has always relied on herself. she'd small, agile, and smart as well- traits that all help her get in even the tightest of places to track prey. she doesn't *try* to hide her skills, but it can be a little difficult on her patience when ex-house pets keep bugging her about learning how to track like she does. for the most part she just focused on the task at hand and blocks out nearly everything else, which, apparently, is very hard for the rest of her clan mates.

PROMPT 2
Username: cinderpelt20
Clan: Roseclan
Word count: 500 exactly!
Prompt: despite being the only blind cat in roseclan, tumblefoot has proved herself as a useful warrior. Usually you can find her underground digging tunnels or expanding the dens. When she isnt digging though you will find her tracking something. Whenever the other warriors cant find what they need they ask her. Though since she cant see she does require another cat to accompany her so that she doesnt fall in a tunnel or get attacked. Usually that cat would be her best friend, stormshadow. The two have a strong bond but keep their relationship strictly friendly. He even has a friendly nickname for her, "worm". Tumblefoot feels as if she could do just about anything the others can and actually sees her blindness as a gift from starclan. If she could see she doesnt think she would like the world as much. Theres so many smells to explore after all! The only thing tumblefoot regrets not being able to see is flowers. She loves flowers, especially water lillies. She imagines them as long spindly green vines that stick out of the water. No matter how many times the others tell her it's actually a small white flower on a green round disk.
Still the strangest thing about being the best tracker is how the others react when they hear she is the best. Some doubt her skills until they witness it first hand, others will simply ignore the fact and try finding what they want on their own, usually ending up lost so that tumblefoot has to come find them. Tumblefoot does have a small weakness when it comes to tracking though. She just cant seem to track when it gets cold. Her nose feels like it's being pierced by hundreds of bee stings and to be honest it makes her very frustrated. Tumblefoot hates the cold.
When speckledfish "lost" her three newborn kits it was tumblefoot who found them. Finding the tiny lifeless bodies made her feel very sad and for many moons she refused to go tracking no matter who or how many times she was asked. Though she couldnt see the bodies she could tell they had been mauled brutally. Tumblefoot was glad she couldnt see it. After learning that it was speckledfish who killed her kits tumblefoot avoided her as much as possible. Honestly it was pretty easy since speckledfish has her own very distinct scent.
While tracking tumblefoot uses her nose, paws, and intuition. She uses her paws to feel the earth, shes able to tell when something has changed the patterns of the earth such as footprints. One of her favorite things to do is to compare her pawprints to others. It makes her feel more like the others.

"The best tracker in the clan is obviously Sleekhaze."
"C'mon guys, this is hardly the time to be arguing over that." The sentinel flicked her tail, neutrally 'watching' them blankly. "We promised Lilacmoon we would be back with the herbs for her by sundown, and I plan to find her those burdock root plants she uses so often."
The apprentices groaned at her, but followed along, there to assist the cat in carrying back any findings. On the edge of the riverbank near the edge of the territory where it pooled near Twisted Rock, the sentinel lowered her nose to the earth and parted her jaws, closing her milky blue eyes as she focused on the smell. The apprentices watched in amazement as she began to mark out spots, immediately moving on to sniff out four spots of burdock root.
"Well?" She prompted when the apprentices hadn't moved. They jolted, jumping into action to dig up the spots she indicated and sure enough, large roots were hidden under the surface. It took quite a bit of digging to get it loose enough to pry out, but they managed to get three out intact, beginning to drag them back with them and picking up a few extras as they went. Lilacmoon was sure to be impressed.
