Bravesoul padded through the dense undergrowth of the forest; twigs and thorns snagging his fur as he went. The tom didn't care and just pushed through the foliage, eyes bright with excitement. He'd just caught a fox's scent trail and in hopes of impressing his clan, decided to follow it.
All of this would be worth it if he could see Lightstar's face brighten with admiration. He'd even be complacent with a few days in the healer's den if it meant she'd look at him the way other she-cats looked at toms. If this worked, he'd be able to woo Lightstar with grand gestures! Freezing, Bravesoul shook the thoughts away. Stars! One step at a time!
Returning his attention to the task at paw, the young warrior traversed through the brambles, eventually making it out into a sunlit clearing. The scent of the fox was strong here, almost burning Bravesoul's nose with the acrid smell.
Wrinkling his muzzle, the tabby crept forward, careful to make as little sound as possible. He scanned the clearing and grinned. There! Right on the left side of the clearing, there was a den dug under the roots of a tall oak tree. Stalking forward, Bravesoul reached the edge of the den and peered curiously inside. There was nothing to be seen, just a long winding tunnel that twisted out of sight. Unfortunately, his area of expertise wasn't in fighting, but rather, in hunting. Sure, he knew the basic moves and could potentially fight his way out of an encounter, but he didn't want to risk a claw to claw battle.
Suddenly, the perfect plan came to mind. Lashing his tail, Bravesoul let out the loudest yowl he could muster and instantly turned tail to hoist himself into a nearby tree. Well, if this didn't work, at least his yowl would have alerted some of his clanmates that he needed help.
A few moments passed before a shuffling sound was heard from the fox den. A gray muzzle poked out, followed by a thin, bright red body. The fox sniffed around for a moment and wandered over to Bravesoul's tree. Said cat lowered his ears and once the fox was close enough, he launched himself at the predator.
In a flurry of claws and teeth, Bravesoul landed square on the fox's back, tearing at its fur and biting hard on one of its ears. The fox let out several pained yelps, followed by a snarl, and tried to snap at Bravesoul's shoulder. Sensing that this could get ugly fast, Bravesoul detached himself from the fox and ran away, the fox hot on his heels.
The plan, which was working perfectly so far, was to lure the fox to the abandoned twoleg den, which luckily, wasn't very far. The fox, hot on his heels snarled loudly, absolutely dead set on catching Bravesoul and exacting revenge. Eventually, the fox began to show signs of tiring. Its steps became more clumsy and even from ahead of it, Bravesoul could hear its labored breath. The tabby tom silently cheered as he neared the twoleg den, he too was started to lose stamina.
Upon reached the edge of the crumbling stone nest, Bravesoul leaped up onto a pillar, digging his claws into the cracked stone to lift himself to a safe height. The fox yipped and barked from below, circling the pillar like a hawk. Now, he had to...uh. Actually, he hadn't thought quite this far ahead.
Feeling panic start to rise in his chest, Bravesoul looked around, frantically searching for a solution. It seemed luck was not on his side today, because he couldn't see anything he could use to help him. Growling, Bravesoul glared down at the fox, fur bristling and tail lashing fearfully from side to side. He had to face the fox head-on.
He had to live up to his name and be brave. A fierce snarl building up in his throat, Bravesoul prepared himself for what could very likely be his own demise. All of a sudden, a chorus of yowls echoed from the forest. The fox and Bravesoul went silent and both turned to look for the source of the noise. Six cats, all lightclan sharpclaws, charged out of the forest, Lightstar leading them. Bravesoul Lit up, relief overtaking his previous expression of fear.
Oh, thank Starclan! Someone had heard his yowl from before! As his classmates snarled and swatted at the fox, Bravesoul met Lightstar's burning gaze. How was he going to explain this to her? Let alone the rest of the clan? He sighed, he shouldn't have done this. If he'd just gone back to camp for help, his friends wouldn't be saving his mouse-brained, mangy tail from a fox. Lightstar wouldn't be looking at him like that...
He'd really messed up this time.
