-maybe stole the gems so she could pass onto the other side, the afterlife, for a brief period of time? maybe because she's missing her lover? maybe she went there to trick death/the keeper with the gems so she and her lover could escape? maybe the garnet has some hidden powers/qualities only he can see, and he wants them? (since the garnet symbolizes life, and he's the death/keeper..dude)
