Though things changed when I met someone new. Someone who never scolded me, someone who never thought my intention to do good was wrong. They had mackerel stripes, just like mine! Gorgeous white accents, and deep purple eyes that were the most beautiful I had ever seen. They made me laugh, made me feel good about myself. I learned that they were a StarClan cat, but they wouldn’t yet tell me their name. I didn’t understand why, but accepted their anonymity. So almost every evening we met, chatting and playing around the forest in my dreams. Even though the place was cold and desolate, this cat made me feel a warmth within my heart. And soon enough I realized, I was in love.
As time passed, they asked me if they could help me train, ensuring me it would help my clanmates. Even though my focus was on the good in the world, they wanted to prepare me for the bad. I told them I would be alright without the training, yet they insisted it would only be beneficial. So, I agreed of course. Because I loved them, and couldn’t possibly see anything wrong with that.

We trained, and they taught me moves I had never seen before. Moves that seemed… incredibly cruel. Though they ensured me these moves were only necessary for survival, and I trusted him. I learned these moves, and began to feel powerful. Though my days in the real world became tiring, exhausted from my training sessions. I tried to stay optimistic, but it was difficult. My focus became worse, and I was hardly able to even catch prey anymore. It was frustrating. But all I wanted to do anymore was sleep, just so I could see them. I found myself growing irritable, and one day I made a terrible mistake. The deputy came to talk to me, their long cheek fur and extended teeth usually brimming with happiness. But this time their expression held anger. The deputy began scolding me, reminding me how I was unable to provide for my clan. That I was lazy. So I struck the deputy, with a move I had learned from my StarClan friend, before I could even think logically.
I expected the deputy to be angry with me, but instead, they wore a look of shock. “Where… where did you learn that?” They asked, in utter disbelief. I was confused, but decided my secret wasn’t worth keeping anymore. I told the deputy everything. And I was hit with the truth of reality. My StarClan friend and lover was not that at all. They were from the Dark Forest. I was heart broken and angry, so much so that I didn’t even listen to the deputy as they tried to instruct me in what to do. I ran out of camp, racing to find a spot hidden away, where I could rest. Sleep. Find my supposed friend. But that was my final mistake. I needed to expose them, show them what they really were.

    Clan: shallowclan
    Age: 42 moons
    Prompt:

    redpaw’s guilty heart
it was only a matter of minutes, done and over with before she had gotten a chance to think. her vision was uneasy as she stood still — her breath bellowing out of her mouth in small plumes of haze. her legs were shaking as she felt uneasy on her paws, tired from the adrenaline rushing through her veins, she noticed her wound finally as she tried to take a step forward. the cinnamon pelted cat looked down to discover what remained of her left front leg, red mixing with the soil below — now water as thunder boomed overhead and the clouds wept. it made her fur stand on end, jolting from her shock, she opened her eyes and whipped around searching frantically. she hadn’t come alone — her brother newtpaw had accompanied her.

this was all her fault, she felt her heart sink so deep into her stomach she thought she may be sick. her gaze becoming blurred she hurried out of the open dirt road, sprinting back towards her island — having split off from the patrol not for a second. it all went wrong so fast. the young molly practically crashed into the sanctuary, her pelt muddy and fur matted from the rain and blood from the injuries she had sustained. her mind was wild as she looked about the crowd of tails and ears, all of them staring back at her in shock and horror. redpaw had barely uttered a sentence before she felt her body go weak — she black out — last thing she could remember were two figures running towards her and her clan mates alerting. then followed a flurry of fur and scents washing over her in the darkness.

next she awoke it was light outside the medicine den, she shot up, realizing she was cuddled up in a nest of made of chocolate mackerel tabby fur. she turned her head to meet the sleeping bear that was her mother, mistlebranch. the young molly’s heart felt conflicted — finding comfort in her mother who had taken her in when she was a kit, though on the other paw she felt utter sickness with herself and what had transpired mere hours ago. she had been trusted to keep newtpaw safe and she had squandered that trust. the red furred molly laid her head back down, looking at all of the herbs paste to her wounds as well as those laid out in front of her. the apprentice knew she was going to be scolded and force fed the medicine if she didn’t comply of her own accord. she craned her neck to lap up the herbs with her tongue — making faces as she chewed and swallowed while her eyes teared up and her ears burned red hot. redpaw could hear newtpaw’s terrified yowls but the tom had told her to run — she felt a sharp pang in her heart. her gaze turned towards mistlebranch, sleeping as peacefully as a mother could with a missing kit. her whiskers twitched with uneasy and her paws moved underneath her heavy pelt. redpaw took solace in her mothers sweet scented fur, cuddling against her hoping to ease both of their heartache. what was she to tell her? should she break her heart more? tell her it was her fault — her fault she’d never see her son again, her only true flesh and blood. the young molly felt shame wash over her, survivors guilt gripping her heart, she choked down tears as she fell back into an uneasy slumber.

she wanted to spare her mothers weary heart, she felt the herbs kicking in and putting her aching body at ease, she had made her decision on what story to tell. when she woke next, her mother wasn’t by her side, instead she stood across the den speaking in a hushed voice with cherrysprout. the two hadn’t noticed redpaw’s awakening — she caught a bit of their conversation,

“do you have any idea what happened?”
“i haven’t the foggiest, i caught a whiff of human while i was tending her wounds but i can’t be sure..”
“they wouldn’t wander that far, maybe the humans have come closer to the islands then we thought.”

redpaw had closed her eyes again, feeling her pelt burning under cherrysprout’s gaze. her mothers voice was heard once more,
“do you think newtpaw is okay?”

the silence that followed was deafening, the apprentice felt her fur stand on end, the air of pain felt in the den was palpable. redpaw made some sort of movement to break the silence, cherrysprout took notice and tended to her immediately. “don’t you move, i’m surprised you made it back fully conscious considering what you’ve lost.” the molly motioned to her leg, it was gone the lower half of it ripped off due to her run in with barbed wire in her escape — she flinched. after being tended too, cherrysprout left to let lochstar and the rest of the clan know that at least one of their apprentices was safe. mistlebranch sat in front of her, reaching down she placed a few good licks on redpaw’s head and ears. “so are you going to tell me what happened?” she spoke gently but her voice was grave and her eyes dewed with worry. redpaw could barely look at her in the eyes, the story that she told her mother next was just that.. a story. she said that newtpaw had gotten lost chasing a rabbit far from the group, she had followed after him to bring him back. she said that he got attacked by a badger near an abandoned barn. she explained that while she was running away she got stuck in barbed wire — that part was the only truth. she hung her head heavily, “i’m sorry.” her voice trembled as she felt her mother wrap her in warmth, “it’s okay, i’m just happy at least one of you made it back to me.” her meow was heavily wrapped in pain, the two molly’s spent the rest of the day in the nest, sharing tongues and prey until the sun had set and the moon shone through the sanctuary’s crevice. illuminating the fine angel dust like sand outside of the den, they watched it glitter until they fell asleep.

though her flesh wounds had since healed, she keeps the true wounds hidden deep in her heart. being tormented by the truth everyday since the incident. newtpaw hadn’t strayed off coarse on accident, redpaw wanted to have some fun as she found that patrol to be boring. newtpaw had just recently made apprentice and the molly was excited to explore with her brother and show him everything she had been taught. she had led him to that abandoned barn — much farther from the island then she had told mistlebranch. the two young cats were playing in the broken down stalls, jumping on hay bales and giggling as they chased each other about. all was quiet but then came the sounds of barking, their fur stood on end as their laughter faded, the blood in their veins running cold. a dog was alerting to their scent. next was the sound of a car turning off and the doors slamming shut. she remembers the look in newtpaw’s eyes — he knew this wouldn’t end well for either of them. the apprentices tried to make their exit and escape as quickly and quietly as possible. slipping out a hole in the side of the barn and hiding in the rose bushes along the side of the barbed fencing, she motioned for newt to go first — her second mistake. as newt was slowly making his way towards the fence line his paw got caught in some wire and he yelped in pain. what happened next was a whirlwind, the dog was over and on top of newt in a moment. redpaw flew to action, leaping on top of the large predator — biting and scratching with the ferocity of her ancestors, in hopes of saving her brother but she wasn’t big enough or strong enough to deter the animal. newt managed to get lose but not after taking a few bites to the ears and back. the commotion caught the attention of the human who accompanied the dog. they were calling out and rushing over, waving their arms about, red disengaged and grabbed newt by the scruff, he yowled in pain. he said he couldn’t move his paws very well. red stared at him in disbelief, but felt the hands of something grabbing her, she bit and scratch the assailant. though she hadn’t counted on there being a second human — the other furless creature grabbed newt from where she had dropped him. she was about to launch herself at the other human but was stomped at by the one she injured. they were attempting to grab her again but she heard newt’s voice from afar. “run red! run!” she felt her heart break as she took one last look at her brother, being carried towards the car, she let out a yowl of agony and took off. the human had let go of the dog once again, the animal was right on the molly’s heels. she leapt over the barbed fencing only to land in a few yards of left overs, she struggled and cried out as she forced her way through. determined to make it back to her clan, all the while the dog drove after her, snapping and barking and snarling though it didn’t follow her past the barbed wire. she made it out but the fencing had taken its fair share of her..

this is the nightmare she relives every day, the guilt she has to carry. a horrific secret for her alone to bare.

Cat Name: Anwir (welsh for liar)
Gender: Unlabeled (uses he/they)
Rank: None, a wandering spirit
Clan: Wanderers of the Bay
Age: 16 years (192 moons)
Prompt:

Bluff is a very inconspicuous-looking cat. A bit dopey, even. You wouldn't think this cat would ever harm a soul.

You'd be wrong.

The day it happened, was the day their life crashed in around them. Literally and figuratively.

The hurricane, is what they called it. Winds whipping around them, ripping off the roof of that old rickety twoleg den that their family called home. The walls crashed down like fragile shale, monsters were picked up from the ground like nothing, water filled the streets as if rivers suddenly were carved by the spirits themselves.

They were trapped, a room filling with water kept them from escaping, the solid walls blocking out light and making it hard to move. They called out and yowled and screeched for their life, yet it fell on deaf ears. The water was cold, salty from the seas and likely from their tears too. They felt alone, the cold making them tired and weakening their struggles. They barely made it out alive, finding a crevice they could scramble out of.

Thing is, they weren't alone.

"Cricket! Can you see anything?" Their sister, spirits, their older sister was there with them. When they had tried to escape with their family the walls had collapsed in on themselves, leaving no room for escape yet enough room for the water to fill in. She was a much better swimmer than them, helping keeping them both afloat as she looked around for an escape route. "Do you see any way to escape?!" Bluff meowed again, worry lacing their tone as they became more panicked.

"Just- hold on! Don't rush me, I need to focus." She snapped, Bluff closing their mouth only for whimpers to escape through. She took in a shuddering breath, the cold seeping through her thin fur and to her bones. They wouldn't last long like this, she knew it, but she had to keep hope. She paddled to one of the walls that collapsed, pushing a paw against the rocks. "If.. I can.." She strained against the stones, grabbing Bluff's attention. The two began pushing against them, only for it to be for naught. They wasted their energy, and it wouldn't be long before..

"Wait-! There- Cricket!" Bluff scrambled against the rocks, spotting light.

An opening, about the size of an older kitten, lay cracked open. Cricket gasped lightly, and the two worked their way towards it. Two sets of paws, one smaller than the other, had peeled those rocks back to make the hole bigger.

"Go first," Cricket had said, "I'll be okay, you go first."

And he did.

And then the waters washed them away.

They don't know what happened to their sister, but they carry a great amount of guilt for losing her. Their family blamed them, and as such, they were banished.

It's why they live with the Wanderers today. Because even their own family didn't want them due to a mistake their younger self made.

Their secret in their mind? They killed their sister inadvertently.

[written on a wrinkled piece of parchment by candlelight...]

i remember a sky ━ a bold, brazen and beautiful sky.

and it was truly lovely. a sky blooming with magic, like a rose-kissed lily unfurling in the dawn enchanted with the melody of a thousand songbirds and the coo of eleven doves. periwinkle clouds rimmed the horizon, lulling the twin moons to a gentle slumber and ushering in the morning star.

but i wish… i wish that was all i remembered.

because i remember so much more. too much.

    i remember…
… scarlet slicking cobblestone, firelight devouring fields, blades unsheathing under the cover of night.
… faceless forms, corpses unburied, shattered fangs
… battlefields of kin against kin, sister against brother, loves in arms against loves

i remember how something as sacred as a promise became as foul as toxic waters, oozing with ruin and rot. and how life once so precious, became dispensable in the name of patriotism. i remember how a field of lilies became one of crossbones and graves.

there’s so much blood on my paws, the guilt a stone on my heart.
but yet… i’ve harmed no one. killed no one. not even lifted a sword against another.

    ↠↠↠

    i bear secrets.

these secrets are not my own. but from… others. those who come seeking rest, refuge and… peace. they come with their nightmares and demons, hurts heavy on their hearts, souls begging for reprieve.

and i take it from them. their secrets, their demons, their nightmares. i take it from them until… that secret is no longer theirs to bear. it becomes mine and mine alone.

i am a safe harbour and their secrets live and die with me. they become a part of me, carving out a place for themselves in my heart. but all these secrets, they weigh heavily. an anchor around a drowning ship, tugging me down.

but there is one secret that stands out.
when i close my eyes, i can picture it like it was yesterday.

and i fear… one day, i’ll be killed for it.

    ↠↠↠

    [a memory...]

swathed in an obsidian cloak, he came under the cover of night.

his eyes burned, the hue of an alchemist’s fire, bright and blazing. defiant. but even then, there were already kinks in his armour. the slight dip of his shoulder, the scarlet smeared across his cheek, the wary dart of his eyes.

“i need your help.” he licked his jaws, a bead of sweat trickling from his damp curls, mixing with the scarlet marring his cheek. “there are rumours of your… gift.”

she shook her head. “it’s late. i don’t know what you’re talking about━”

please.” his breath trembled, claws splintered the wood of the door. “let’s not play games, avienne. i can pay.”

with a toss, a small pouch hit the cobbled floors. gold, silver and coppers spilled out like a fresh spring, emerald and rubies like petals of shattered glass upon dusty grounds. but it wasn’t what persuaded her.

it was the desperation, the hopeless terror in his eyes. something that ached… and something she knew all too well.

she stepped aside. “come in, quickly. have a seat…”

he closed his eyes. “... just do it here.”

“here?” she faltered. “i think it’s best if we do it━”

like steel manacles, his grip tightened around hers, shaking with breathless intensity. his breath was warm against her cheek, eyes hooded, yet blazing. pleading. “do it, now. we don’t have much time.”

“alright, alright. just…” she reached for him, paws gentle around his head, brushing the curls over his eyes aside. “relax. just… relax.”

colors swirled, pastel watercolors muddled and blurred, dipped with muted tones. somewhere beyond, the oceans rippled like ink running under the midnight moons.

silver crossbones marked a tattered crimson flag, waving like shredded ribbons on a ship. a pirate ship.

"'bout time, kingfisher. you got 'em?" the pirate grinned, rotted teeth, flashing. "ah, you never let us down."

with a soft grunt, he passed over two sleeping bundles. one silver, another with pecan curls. each bearing the king’s royal crest as a pendant around their necks. he placed them into crates, sliding them over to the pirate. averting his gaze, he sheathed his sword.

scarlet dripped. one drop. two drops.

the pirate laughed, a short, piercing whistle. the glint in his eyes, greedy, as he slid a cover over the crate. his claws tapped the tops, one at a time, a slowly rising drumbeat. “the rebels will be pleased. and the king… not so much.”

her eyes opened, a gasp on her lips. she staggered back, paws curling around herself, flinching away from the cloaked tom before her. “what… what have you done?”

but he - the kingfisher - never answered. couldn’t answer.
for the secret was no longer his to bear.

it was hers. and hers alone.

    ↠↠↠

[scrawled on a shreded piece of parchment, the writing messy and haggard...]

that day will come one day.

i know it will. the king is already searching for his daughters, stolen by mercenaries working for the rebellion. he's razed half a dozen villages and apprehended countless suspects in his search. rumours are, he's already found the kingfisher and is retracing his steps.

but he's not the only one looking.

so many opportunists are out there from the rebellion to the patriots to the arisocats looking for leverage. they seek the one who knows the answers of what happened on that ink-tainted midnight. and they'll stop at nothing to get it.

    i'm leaving. i just hope i'm not too━

[the rest of the parchment remains unfinished, a dark smear on the last word.]

though her flesh wounds had since healed, she keeps the true wounds hidden deep in her heart. being tormented by the truth everyday since the incident. newtpaw hadn’t strayed off coarse on accident, redpaw wanted to have some fun as she found that patrol to be boring. newtpaw had just recently made apprentice and the molly was excited to explore with her brother and show him everything she had been taught. she had led him to that abandoned barn — much farther from the island then she had told mistlebranch. the two young cats were playing in the broken down stalls, jumping on hay bales and giggling as they chased each other about. all was quiet but then came the sounds of barking, their fur stood on end as their laughter faded, the blood in their veins running cold. a dog was alerting to their scent. next was the sound of a car turning off and the doors slamming shut. she remembers the look in newtpaw’s eyes — he knew this wouldn’t end well for either of them. the apprentices tried to make their exit and escape as quickly and quietly as possible. slipping out a hole in the side of the barn and hiding in the rose bushes along the side of the barbed fencing, she motioned for newt to go first — her second mistake. as newt was slowly making his way towards the fence line his paw got caught in some wire and he yelped in pain. what happened next was a whirlwind, the dog was over and on top of newt in a moment. redpaw flew to action, leaping on top of the large predator — biting and scratching with the ferocity of her ancestors, in hopes of saving her brother but she wasn’t big enough or strong enough to deter the animal. newt managed to get lose but not after taking a few bites to the ears and back. the commotion caught the attention of the human who accompanied the dog. they were calling out and rushing over, waving their arms about, red disengaged and grabbed newt by the scruff, he yowled in pain. he said he couldn’t move his paws very well. red stared at him in disbelief, but felt the hands of something grabbing her, she bit and scratch the assailant. though she hadn’t counted on there being a second human — the other furless creature grabbed newt from where she had dropped him. she was about to launch herself at the other human but was stomped at by the one she injured. they were attempting to grab her again but she heard newt’s voice from afar. “run red! run!” she felt her heart break as she took one last look at her brother, being carried towards the car, she let out a yowl of agony and took off. the human had let go of the dog once again, the animal was right on the molly’s heels. she leapt over the barbed fencing only to land in a few yards of left overs, she struggled and cried out as she forced her way through. determined to make it back to her clan, all the while the dog drove after her, snapping and barking and snarling though it didn’t follow her past the barbed wire. she made it out but the fencing had taken its fair share of her..

this is the nightmare she relives every day, the guilt she has to carry. a horrific secret for her alone to bare.
