Reeling back in surprise, Mochi giggled softly at the new found friend. She hummed softly to herself, trying to carry on the soft hues of the sky and gentle song of the forest. This part of the morning is what she loves the most, the gentle caress of the pastel colors against the barely formed wispy clouds. The feline took a moment longer to fully absorb the perfection she saw painted in the sky. The sky painted her direction; east, along with the knowledge that it was going to be a good day.
On she went, elegance exuding from her as her long coat moved in tandem with the gentleness of the morning breeze. Moments like these are when Mochi enjoys grounding herself to the world around her. She focused her thoughts on her extremities and what they were in contact with. Beneath her paw pads she felt the dew conjured by the dawn. At the tips of her whiskers she felt the newness of the day, the vast amount of possibilities that this day could bring. Against her skin she felt the silkiness of her own fur as it was pushed forward slightly by the breath of the wind. As she went, her ears twitched at the sound of the rustling leaves far off in the distance. Tobi seemed to notice it due to the fact he slithered up her head and raised himself tall, flicking his tongue to taste the air.
Mochi stalled, pausing her light steps to focus on the crunching growing ever closer. Tobi began to hiss at the advancing noise. Even the feline began to tense, her body recoiling ever so slightly, the muscles in her haunches coiled like a taught spring. Bushes shuddered before parting to reveal a rather large tom-cat, his coat larger than her own and much more matted. Her ears pulled back in wariness as her eyes never broke contact with his own, but the tomcat didn’t seem to notice the tension as his tail raised in good nature.
The tom cat seemed friendly, or stupid, she couldn’t decipher which. He was rather large, larger than her and she was on the bigger end for she-cats. He almost resembled a lion, or at least what she was told one looked like. Except instead of being a soft golden like the enormous beings, his coat was a subtle cream overrun by a pretty shade of gray. His eyes captured her tho, large and vibrant in their shade of yellow. His sudden outburst startled her. “Hi!” the tom exclaimed.
“Hello..” Mochi drawled back, wariness even creeping into her tone.
“I’m Giovanni, or Gio for short for my friends. Or at least that’s what I’d ask them to call me if I had any that lasted long enough to get to the nickname stage!” The tom, whose face now had a name, chirped. His slim tail flicked excitedly. He looked like a kit on his first hunt.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Mochi. And this little guy right here is Tobiko.” Tobiko hissed in response to his name being mentioned at the newcomer. His unwillingness to be cordial to newcomers was common, he was often skeptical much longer than his feline counterpart. Mochi began to relax a little, this giant airhead seemed to be innocent at the least. She sat down but did not curl her tail across her paws, leaving them free incase of an emergency escape.
“Oh woah, he’s so cool! May I touch him?” Giovanni went to step forward but Tobi beat him to it and bared his fangs in warning. “Nevermind then. Well, what are you doing? Where are you going?”
“Just out for a walk, no destination in mind.”
“Oh, then may I join you? You’re the first friendly cat I’ve seen!” Giovanni cocked his head, rounded ears drooping dumbly against the fluff of his face.
“Uh, yeah I guess so! Why’re you out here?” Mochi questioned, standing in preparation to continue her travels. Tobi relaxed a bit, resting his head on his companion’s but his slitted eyes never left the large tom. Giovanni responded, explaining with muted excitement how he ended up in this predicament and out here on his own. The two continued to chat, Giovanni’s kit-like behavior only adding to the youthfulness and genuinity of the morning. Mochi didn’t realize the third cat until much later. It had been lingering in the darkness, slinking along behind them in mastered silence. This cat being able to mask its presence was second-nature, a perfect assassin. Except, this cat has no malice in their movements, just pure mischief. “Shut up.” Mochi hissed lowly to the boisterous tom who quieted in response. “Show yourself,” She demanded.
The new cat chuckled softly and melted from the shadows into the light. “Hello there,” They purred teasingly, their slim tail waving softly behind them. Their voice was low and raspy, yet strangely elegant. The two other felines looked between themselves, confused as to when this cat had gotten here and why they were following them. “I heard you two tromping through the forest and decided to do a bit of eavesdropping. I was bored,” The way this cat explained themselves was so nonchalant it infuriated the tabby.
Mochi words had a hunt of a hiss to them as her tail lashed behind her. “How long were you following us? And why?”
“Now now dear, it wouldn’t be so fun to reveal all my secrets now would it?” The new cat hummed, their head tilting in subtle arrogance.
“Can you at least tell us your name?”
“That I can do. My name is Wren. I’ve been wandering out in these woods for quite some time now but only your strangle trio has caught my attention like this so far. I’d like to join you.” Wren answered, a sly grin gracing her muzzle.
“No.” Mochi answered simply.
“Well it doesn’t seem like you have a choice as you didn’t seem to notice me following you for the past few miles or so. I can join you guys whenever I feel like it and you wouldn’t know a thing!”
“Fine. But stop talking.” Mochi huffed before turning to continue off into the forest. Her new acquaintances; Giovanni and Wren followed along behind her as they continued on their adventure.
