Otherwise, she steps back and lets him take the lead. But once he comes to care about someone, he starts to avoid them, for fear of getting too attached. Most of his herdmates believe he may have lost his original herd in some disaster or another, and now he cannot handle the feelings that come with bonds and the ever-existing possibility of losing them. So, he remains distant and in charge, perhaps he will come back, perhaps he will not.
