Flames crackled softly in the sandy, ash-laden pit at the center of a rocky meadow that La'ari's herd rested in. The young stag raises his head, his dark eyes searching the starlit skies above. His herd-mates slept calmly around him, and yet, something deep inside his chest kept him awake. The air was calm, and the grass beneath him warm and dry. The half-moon above reflected silver upon his dark horn, giving a sharp contrast to the faint orange light of the fire that flickered behind him. The prince's tail flicks behind him, and he heaves a sigh, standing up on his hooves and approaching the fire pit. As he peers into the flames, he wonders if his parents had known how apt their name for him would be, even as a young fawn. Lata, to spark, combined with the later half of corari, the fire. He remembers his mother explaining his name to him in his first winter. The memory quickly becomes painful, and La'ari shakes his head, turning away from the pit. The fire was plenty warm, still, especially for a summer night. It did not need him tending it.
La'ari picks his way across the meadow, careful not to disturb any of the others as they slept. If he could not rest, at least he could make sure that those under his protection were safe. Their home was not an easy place to live, and all manner of predator would delight in finding his herd as they slept for the night. The thought of a direwolf's jaws closing over the delicate throat of their youngest fawns was enough for La'ari to push his way into the brush and commence his patrol of their perimeter- an action that he found himself performing nearly every night after having taken his mantle of Prince. He needed to keep them safe.
He would not fail them, as he had failed his parents.
