this was the third of many interviews chelsea had been through. or at least, she assumed there would be hundreds more. it was something she had to force herself to accept after her first rejection. at this point, chelsea figured that’s how breaking into the music scene was going to be. so what! she was having fun talking with new like minded people anymore. after her first two rejections she had decided her third, wasn’t going to be the hanger for her hopes. but a way for her to make new connections and share her personal pieces with fellow musicians.
she couldn’t deny it. her heart still hang a little heavy at the thought of endlessly making plans with strangers, only to be told better luck next time at the end of each outing. but it was something to do. chelsea hadn’t been able to really make many friends between school and her personal isolation as she practiced over and over for hours.
her bass nudged against her back as she shifted on her feet. her hand dropped back down to her side as she waited for someone to open the door and greet her. there was a moment of doubt, maybe there was a garage or basement entrance she was supposed to go to- it didn’t matter. she’d figure it out.
the door opened with a click and an excited giggle, “hi! you must be chelsea! i’m poke! full disclosure, i can almost guarantee you a spot in the band. but i can almost guarantee we’re going nowhere fast.”
the man that greeted her at the door was green and tall, covered in shaggy and dyed fur. his bangs drooped in front of… pink? eyes? he seemed very welcoming, and what confidence chelsea had, couldn’t even try to drop at this point. he was too forthcoming and sweet. “hi poke! um. full disclosure, i’m not looking for a viral headlining band to join. i just want homies to play with on a decent schedule.”
“oh hell yeah dude, i can vibe with that. c’mon in. the Homies are in the kitchen grabbing drinks if you want to join us. set your bass wherever you want, you’ll see the house is populated mostly by music things.”
chelsea happily stepped over the threshold of what felt like the beginning of a new chapter in her life. maybe things were turning up.

It was only a few years ago when Leo picked up the bass for the first time. His friends joked saying they needed a bassist and it didn't matter what skill level since they were all beginners. He didn’t have anything better to do so he joined intending to be just a temporary member. However as he learned more and more about how to play the bass, he fell in love. He loved the way the strings felt as he strung them. Eventually, he became a staple of the band. His friends’ joked, “Hey weren’t you the only one feeling unsure! Well too bad you aren’t leaving us!”
They spent all their free time practicing and then one day they managed to play on stage at their school’s talent show.
“We can do it! It’s our first time on stage!”
As the talent show neared, everyone felt a little nervous. The curtains rose and the vocalist introduced everyone. Leo took a gulp looking into the crowd.
“3..2..1..!”
The music starts. Leo now focusing on the beat could ignore the crowds for the time being. However, the jitters haven’t left him. A few mistakes later, the crowds cheered as they scurried backstage. Leo finally relaxed and gave a big sigh.
“I can’t believe I messed up so many times on stage!”
The vocalist and drummer gave him an empathic smile.
“Hey, you’re not the only one who made mistakes. We did amazing and it’s our first show. Listen to them cheer!”
Leo sighed and nodded in acknowledgment. It’s their first show after all.
However, his doubts stayed with him. Every time his band members offer him a solo, the nervousness and doubts start rearing it ugly head. He turns them down saying, “I appreciate it but I don’t think I’m ready.” He continues with the band as his performances were now perfected yet the doubt lingered in his soul.
They now have a team to help them out. The manager believes it is time for Leo to have a solo but couldn’t convince him so the manager suggests, “Hey Leo, you should try some small gigs on the side to see how it feels playing solo.”
Still hesitant on performing solos, Leo automatically tried to reject the proposal but the manager stayed firm.
“It’s to grow as a band. Try it.”
Leo groaned as he walked into the venue. Today it was background music for this small restaurant. He was still nervous his music wouldn’t be good enough. However, as soon as he started playing, the crowd at the restaurant turned to him. He chuckled nervously as he continued to play. After an hour or so, another artist comes to replace him. As he walked off the stage, a woman in the crowd stopped him.
“Hey, you played amazingly out there!”
He gave her a small smile and thanked her, thinking she was just being polite but soon guests at almost every table stopped him and complimented his music.
Back at the studio, he stops the manager.
“I.. I think I’m ready for a solo.”
The manager, almost jumping from joy, hurriedly rushed him to his bandmates. The smiles and excitement from all his bandmates surprised him as they celebrated his acceptance for a solo.
