It's also a helpful catalogue for Coral Branch to remember the things she's seen; her memory has always been terrible, but for some reason, names always stick around. To have a tangible, visible collection of things she's seen, places she's been, animals she's met, events she's held, and so much more is so valuable to Coral Branch.
Coral Branch is a beloved member of the Forest Community, so she meets hundreds of animals every season. She's outgoing, and a bit of an entrepeneur (albeit a bit nihilistic)! Naming the plushies after those she meets or sells to or is her system for remembering everyone she's connected with.
The fish wasn't her first plushie, but it is her most beloved. It was from her very first partner before they split, and Coral Branch keeps it as a reminder that many things aren't permanent: her memory, her friends, her creations, and likely her world. Due to this little plushie, Coral Branch stays kind and humble in spite of her ever-present, looming fear of the passage of time.
