Pumpkin has always loved her namesake. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. Bumpy pumpkins, smooth pumpkins, pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, basically if it's pumpkin she probably likes it. But one thing she had never tried before was pumpkin carving. She wanted to make a cute jack-o-lantern and place it at the front of the house. Going through some of the pumpkins she had picked out, she chose a large, smooth one. It was beautiful! She did her best at marking where she wanted the face to be, then got to work. Clawing and carving and digging at it. After a while though, she realized it was not working out as well as she had imagined. It.. Sort of looked like a face.. maybe. Mostly just a poor, attacked pumpkin. She gave a sigh and stared for a moment. One of her friends walked up and bumped her side saying 'Well, it could always be used to scare the kits instead? Then you could make some pie out of it.' Giving an ironic little smile Pumpkin nodded replying 'Yeah, at least it's scary enough for that. Maybe next year I'll be able to make it look cute though.' And with a little help from her friend, they moved it over to spook the younger ones for Halloween.

Wingspan was founded on the belief that every cat was free. As such, the troupe would travel from place to place, never truly grounded in one spot, and often would sleep underneath the stars. Or, at least most of them would.

Hummingbird realized from an early time that she was not meant to sleep underneath the stars, the open sky, or anywhere in which she was exposed. It sent her heart racing, her paws twitching, her eyes refusing to close, her ears on a swivel for any new noise, from the bugs crawling near her nose to the coyotes or owls in the distance. For some reason, in the open, she felt more trapped than she ever could in a cave or in a bush.

At first, Hummingbird would hide her discomfort, always volunteering to take watches at night so she could sleep during the day, not having to fear the stars or the sounds of the night. When the clan started to grow, the leader wouldn't let her keep taking all the night watches, wanting to make sure the rotations were fair, and that Hummingbird herself could be utilized more during the day. At first, she tried to stick it out, but realized pretty quickly that it would not work.

Instead of letting the feeling of failure defeat her, Hummingbird raised to the challenge - she admitted to the leader that she was not able to sleep out in the open as her clanmates might, and that she would take whoever felt more comfortable in smaller spaces with her to a safe spot. Thus, she became more of a leader in her own way, helping others realize their own insecurities and ensuring that they felt comfortable speaking up in challenging situations, or with their own setbacks or failures.
