History wrote:xxxThe moose. An animal of great significance to SpringClan; the large beast was rarely seen in the clan’s thickly forested home. When it was seen, it was considered and omen. What sort of omen depended on the cat you asked- some members of the clan would tell you the moose, despite it’s terrifying size, was gentle. Others would assure you it’s strength was dangerous. Many feared the creature, whether they claimed it to be a reflection of the forest, thriving, or a warning of danger. And yet, very few had even seen the beast in question.
xxxBeing such a large part of the clan’s culture, the moose’s name was also considered significant. As such, Moosewish was looked upon expectantly. After all, a cat deemed worthy of the prefix moose must be something special. The she-cat was the result of a code-breaking litter; the daughter of a previous medicine cat. Cats had whispered about the scandal just out of sight all throughout her kithood, stopping only briefly at her mother’s passing. Questions had always flitted around her, just out of earshot- or perhaps out of reach, about the events around her birth. Most of all, about what it meant if a medicine cat, the cat with the strongest understanding of omens, had named her kit after the clan’s returning one.
xxxMoosewish herself wanted answers more than any other cat. What had she ever done to deserve a name so large? Had she mewled a bit louder than her littermates? Been more demanding at meal time? She desperately wished she had answers, not only for herself, but to ease the constant, burning gaze of her clanmates’ eyes on her pelt. She didn’t want to be deemed ‘special’, to have their expectations thrust onto her from the moment she opened her eyes. She didn’t want to disappoint them. And yet she didn’t have a choice. Many days she spent her free time in the forest, hoping to encounter the- or maybe a moose, whether there were multiple she didn’t know. Hoping it would relieve some of her questions.
xxxMany of these days, at least one of her littermates would visit her at least once. They urged her not to let her clanmates’ expectations get to her, not to let herself and her life waste away waiting for a creature who might never show up. In the back of her mind, Moosewish knew her littermates also suffered the curse of her name. Her mother’s code-breaking mistake was often forgiven when it came to Moosewish, but for her siblings, it was a different story. Not only that, but the clan’s high expectations of her often leaked over to her littermates, but with heightened ferocity. Why weren’t they the ones named after the clan’s legendary moose? Surely, this meant they must not have been good enough.
xxxAnd for this, for herself, her clan, and her littermates, Moosewish had come to the conclusion that she must never stop waiting, searching for the moose.
