    Aster did not need anyone.

She’d always been fine on her own- training, growing stronger, preparing to take on commissions herself. She was perfectly capable, and better by herself. She didn’t want a partner, nor did she need one.

    Why didn’t they understand that?

“I fail to see why this is necessary,” she said coldly, looking over the papers that she’d been handed. The pokemon who had handed them to her, a fretful-looking emolga, shifted uncomfortably, drumming her paws on the desk. “I’ve always completed missions on time by myself, have I not?”

“T-the higher ups thought it would be best,” the secretary said, pushing her glasses up her nose and avoiding Aster’s scathing gaze. “Seeing as the terrain you’re being sent to investigate is unstable, and going alone would be exceedingly dangerous.”

Aster sighed. She might not like this, but if the higher ups had specially assigned it there wasn’t much she could do. She’d just have to hope that whoever had been assigned to help her didn’t slow her down too much.

“Fine,” she said, turning on her heel and stalking away. The secretary looked profoundly relieved to see her go.

Aster glanced down at the profile of the pokemon she’d been assigned with for the expedition. One of the papers was a professional profile of their previous jobs, and another was a slip that looked to have been personally filled out, some sort of self-evaluation.

    Name: Kelvin!
    Species: Pansear (fire type)
Talents: climbing, cooking, and making new friends!!

Oh, Arceus. The extra exclamation points. Aster felt a headache coming on already.

Let’s just get this over with/

    - - - - -

“Hello! It’s so nice to meet you, partner!”

There was the headache, throbbing insistently in her temples, intensifying as Aster looked at the beaming smile of the pansear who had bounced over to her.

“Kelvin, was it?” She inquired, attempting to at least be cordial. “I’m Aster. It’s… nice to meet you as well.”

Kelvin’s smile was all sunshine. Aster tried to keep her frown small. He reminded her of an excited puppy, practically tripping over his feet in his excitement. She only hoped that the overflowing enthusiasm wouldn’t get in the way of their job- he did seem to have a good record, based on the paperwork she’d looked over earlier. She would cling to that thought, and hope that this wouldn’t turn out to be a complete disaster.

If it did, though- maybe the higher ups would learn their lesson, and not assign her any partnered missions in the future.

The thought gave her some small measure of hope, and she steeled herself to head after Kelvin as he practically bounded out of the guildhall.

“Let’s go!” He cheered. “That terrain isn’t gonna map itself!”

    - - - - -

The mission was simple on paper- the region had recently been rocked by a curious series of tremors, the cause of which was as of yet unknown. Though there were several teams out working on that particular investigation, Kelvin and Aster’s mission was a bit different. The tremors had caused shifts in the terrain of the area, and normal paths had been disrupted and rendered unstable by the opening of crevasses, or cave-ins in the winding mountain range where the guildhall sat. Aster and Kelvin had been sent to scout the area, so the guild could update its maps and safely adjust travel routes as needed.

    Simple, in theory.

Aster was forced to admit that Kelvin was pretty good at his job. Despite the chipper attitude that had only served to increase her headache, he was able to focus keenly on the task at hand, and climb up to vantage points that would take her longer to reach, scratching notes on the notebook and map they’d been provided with a studious light in his eyes. And they were good- Aster just hoped this would keep up.

“Be careful!” She called up as Kelvin scrambled back down a rock face toward her, eager as ever. “If you fall and hurt yourself, I’m not looking forward to lugging you all the way back.”

“I’m always careful!” Kelvin responded with a laugh, landing on the ground and dashing back over to her- promptly tripping and sprawling on the ground. Aster raised an eyebrow at him, supremely unimpressed.

“Sorry, sorry, I’m fine,” he said in a rush, hopping back to his feet. “Let’s compare notes- what’ve you gotten from the ground level? It’ll be more accurate if we’re checking each other’s notes. You can see things I might have missed, and vice versa.”

Good enough reasoning, Aster decided, consenting to the swap. She’d done missions like this one in the past, and prided herself on her attention to detail when it came to mapmaking. But the pressure she put on herself only made any inevitable small errors feel worse. Overly cheerful though Kelvin might be, she couldn’t help but feel comforted by the knowledge that there was another set of eyes on her work, helping both of them to complete the task to the best of their knowledge.

“Hey-Kelvin,” she said, after they’d exchanged maps back.

“Yeah?” the pansear said, turning around with another one of those bright smiles. Somehow, it didn’t feel quite as much like a headache to look at anymore.

“You’re, uh. Good at this,” Aster said, despising the awkward way the words came out. She wasn’t used to talking to others like this, after working by herself for so long. Half of her expected that Kelvin would laugh, or make her feel dumb somehow- but his smile remained unfaltering.

“Aw, thanks!” He returned it, smile somehow seeming to get brighter. “You’re pretty good at this yourself- it’s been a long time since I worked with anyone, so it’s pretty refreshing!”

That gave Aster pause- she’d assumed that someone as bubbly as him would be well used to working with others. She didn’t want to pry, though- they were strangers, after all, so she kept her silence.

The walk to their next survey site was done in relative silence- Kelvin still seemed cheerful enough, but he seemed oddly contemplative as well, a thoughtful look on his face as he bounded ahead of Aster. She hung back, studying her map and opting to give him space.

As they made their way to the next bit of terrain they had to map, though, the pair felt a faint shaking beneath their paws, and glanced at each other uneasily.

“Another tremor, do you think?” Kelvin asked, scrambling back to her side with a worried expression.

“Could be,” Aster acknowledged, trying to look impassive. She didn’t know how Kelvin responded to stress, and didn’t want to accidentally make him more upset by appearing worried herself. “We should be fine to continue on, provided it was only a minor quake. We’ll have to be careful, though.”

“Got it,” Kelvin said, for once not grinning at her, but instead looking focused and serious. “Let’s go.”

And so they forged on ahead, consulting their half-completed maps and glancing nervously at the rocks overhead. The path they were currently on was a new one, carved out by the tremors, a narrow footpath with jagged stone cliffs on either side. Aster prayed that they would remain open.

As if in defiance of her silent plea, the ground rumbled beneath their feet again.

“We should get out of here,” Aster said, her feeling of uneasiness growing. “I don’t think it’s safe if the tremors continue at this rate. They might be building up to a bigger one- or even this series of smaller ones might shift the landscape more.”

“Yeah, I’m feeling a bit unsafe right about now,” Kelvin remarked with a lopsided grin. Aster studied his face and realized that this was an expression of fear- his smile was not genuine, but rather an attempt to hide how worried he was.

“It’ll… be okay,” she said, bumping his shoulder with her own. “We’ll make it back alright, we’ve just got to be careful.”

Another, stronger tremor rocked the ground beneath their paws, this time accompanied by a loud cracking sound from overhead.

“Run for it!” Kelvin said, springing into action before Aster could realize what was happening. She felt a warm body slam into her side, and as she turned to ask Kelvin why he’d done that, she saw a rock fragment slide from the cliffs and plummet to the place where she’d been standing.

    That would have been me.

    He just saved my life.

“Thank-“ she started to say, but was cut off by Kelvin’s paws tugging her along.

“Later!” He insisted, eyes darting all about to assess the situation. “No time to talk. Right now, we have to move.”

And move they did- as fast as their paws could carry them. Sprinting across the crumbling stone as fast as they could go, even as it shook beneath their feet. And Aster found that she kept looking for Kelvin, making sure he was beside or around her, still running. That when either of them stumbled, the other caught them instinctually, supporting them until they could stand on their feet again.

It was… nice, having someone beside her like this, Aster realized. She glanced at Kelvin again.

He glanced back at her, with the same nervous grin. They’d made considerable progress, but still had a decent trek back to the guildhall.

In the split second of Kelvin turning to face her, Aster saw more rocks come careening down, directly toward her partner- wait. When had she started thinking of him as her partner?

She started to shout his name, but before she could even finish speaking the stones had tumbled down around Kelvin, striking him. They were not huge rocks, and he wasn’t crushed, but still collapsed to the ground. Aster scrambled over to him, horrified.

A blow to the head- no visible injury, possibly concussed, needs medical attention. Blows to one leg- will be bruised, doesn’t look broken, but likely unable to support weight at the moment. Aster’s mind whirred, scanning the fallen pansear for injuries. In unconsciousness, Kelvin had an almost puzzled expression on his face, as though he’d been wondering what she was looking at. Aster felt a weird lurching sensation in her chest, guilty that she’d been the one to distract him.

I have to get him back to the guild.

Aster struggled to lift his unconscious body, but eventually succeeded in draping him across her shoulders.

If you fall and hurt yourself, I’m not looking forward to lugging you all the way back.

That’s what she had said to him- meant as a jibe, but now she found that the stillness was unnerving. Even in a short time, she’d gotten used to Kelvin’s bouncing energy and stream of conversation. To have him silent and heavy and unconscious like this was… disturbing. Aster frowned, continuing to forge ahead.

“You’d better be okay,” she muttered, finding herself wishing for the bright smile that mere hours earlier she had seemed to be headache-inducing. How had she gotten attached so quickly? A few returned compliments and smiles and she had been completely won over.

Maybe you wanted company more than you realized. Maybe you were scared of letting anyone get close. Maybe a few smiles were all it took, because you’ve craved it for so long but had convinced yourself you didn’t need it.

Aster swallowed heavily over the growing lump in her throat, shifting her weight so that Kelvin was rebalanced on her shoulders. She couldn’t afford to get distracted by self-pity right now. There was still a long way to go.

    - - - - -

It was dark by the time Aster reached the guildhall, illuminated by warm lanternlight. Upon seeing the pair crest the last bit of trail before reaching the building, they were set upon by concerned scouts and herded off to the medic’s quarters before Aster could even give an explanation. Kelvin’s still-unconscious form was lifted from Aster’s shoulders, and she watched with worry as he was laid on a bed to have his wounds checked. She’d tried to keep him level as much as possible while hiking over the rough terrain to get back, but hoped that she hadn’t accidentally caused his condition to worsen. Swallowing hard once again, she turned to exit the medic’s office- and found her way blocked by a gently frowning goodra.

“Where do you think you’re going?” the healer asked sternly, eyeing her up and down. “You’re in need of treatment as well, after your ordeal. Come, sit down.”

Aster was bundled onto a cot of her own, bandaged up and given some medicine for the headache that had returned, throbbing in her temples this time as she worried for Kelvin’s sake. Though she tried to stay awake, wanting to make sure that her partner- when had she started thinking of him as her partner?- was okay, the exhaustion of the day’s events and all her worry started to catch up to her, and Aster sank deep into a dreamless sleep.

    - - - - -

    “..s she okay?”

The voice sounded as though it was coming from far away- perhaps from under the water. Aster tried to move, wanting to see who it was, but her body felt so heavy that she was unable to do so.

“She’s fine… exhausted, let… rest,” another voice seemed to respond, words fading in and out of Aster’s notice. Were they talking about her? Aster tried again to stir, and this time her tired limbs responded, enabling her to stretch out and lift her head to see-

-Kelvin, looking a bit bruised and sporting a new bandage around his head, but awake. He was awake, and he was smiling at her.

“She’s awake!” he cheered, bounding right up to her bedside. “I woke up a little bit back and I was here, Aster! In the medic’s office! And there you were, unconscious in next cot over- you really had me scared for a bit, there!”

Possibly due to the sleepy blurriness fogging her mind, Aster almost laughed at the statement.

I was worried about you,” she mumbled, the words feeling thick as she spoke them. “You-”

“Excuse me,” the medic said, bustling over once more, “Aster here needs her rest in order to recover- as do you,” she said, sternly waving a goopy hand at Kelvin. “You- what is your relationship to the patient?” She continued, still looking at Kelvin. “The higher ups are requesting a report of the mission you two got injured on- something about liabilities, or some such jargon- and I don’t feel you two should have to fill that out in your state. We just need some information from the pair of you, and my coworkers and I will go ahead and-”

“My partner,” Aster said, surprising herself. Both the goodra and Kelvin looked at her, wide-eyed. “He’s my partner,” she repeated, more firmly this time. “We were paired on a surveying expedition together, but got caught up in the tremors in the area.”

“Ah,” the goodra nodded sagely, looking sympathetic. “I see. Glad you were able to drag yourselves back here to be treated, at the least- the number of rescue expeditions we’ve had to send out in the past month has skyrocketed. I’ll leave you two to rest,” she put a meaningful emphasis on the word, “and get to work on the report for you.”

When the medic had bustled out, muttering under her breath about papers and medical records, Kelvin fixed Aster with another wide-eyed stare.

“Did you mean it?” he said. “When you called me your partner?”

“I- yes?” Aster said, shrugging in a would-be casual manner, fervently wishing for the ground to swallow her up. A well-placed tremor and crevasse opening would be fantastic right about now, she thought. “I just- liked working with you, I guess. It felt like we made a pretty good team.”

She half expected Kelvin to brush her off- but the resulting smile he gave her was the brightest one yet.

“I’m so relieved you feel like that! I really liked working with you too, but most other pokemon think I’m “too much” or something, and end up requesting a transfer after being paired with me- but I feel like we actually clicked pretty well! I’d definitely like to take on some more jobs with you in the future. When we’re, uh, both all healed up and everything,” he amended, gesturing to the bandages on both of them.

“Sounds like a plan,” Aster replied, with a tired smile of her own. Before she realized quite what was happening, Kelvin had hopped up to give her a quick hug.

“Thank you, also, for bringing me back,” he said quietly. “I’m excited to work with you.”

“You too,” Aster responded, just as softly. And then Kelvin was letting go, and making his way back to his own cot.

“I’d better try to get some rest- or at least stop walking around, so the medic doesn’t come in and yell at me again,” he giggled. “Get well soon, partner!”

The longer she spent in his company, the easier Aster found it to smile in return.
