Protect their friends, protect their family... honestly, they wouldn't even mind protecting complete strangers from harm if they happened to stumble upon some cat in danger.
But they couldn't. They couldn't protect anyone, no matter how hard they tried.
It had started with their sister. She had always been great fun - pranking them, and chasing after their tail when they were just little kits. They had been somewhat annoyed by all of that at the time, sure, but they knew it was all just in good fun. They loved her dearly, of course, and knew that she felt the same way in turn. It was usually her looking out for them, though - they had been the runt of their litter. And they was a very small one at that, even by runt standards. So she always helped them out in any way she could - giving them first pickings of the prey and scraps they scrounged up on hunts (if you could even call them "hunts"), standing up for them when bigger, rougher cats wanted someone little enough to pick on, and even carrying them along once or twice when they needed to get somewhere quick, and their smaller legs couldn't keep up - or if they were just too exhausted to keep going.
At the time, they hadn't been so concerned with protecting others. They were the one being protected, after all - why would they need to worry about protecting someone whose duty seemed to be to protect them?
They've regretted this mentality ever since... ever since it happened.
They were wandering the street, the two of them - no where in particular to go that day. It had been rather pleasant, actually - both of their bellies were decently full for once, and the warm rays of the sun were kind enough to warm their fur without scorching them with heat. It wasn't often that days as nice as that came around, so they were sure nothing terrible could possibly happen on a day like that.
But sometimes, life liked to take you by surprise, for better or for worse.
It all happened faster than they could register, at the time. A bright flash of metal, a loud
bang and a shriek cut short. And then... their sister was gone.
It was still a blur today, but they had figured out what happened once the shock had worn off. A monster - one of those awful hulking Twoleg beasts - had come off of its path to attack them. And their sister... she had protected them. The way she always had.
It sickened them to realize they were the only reason their sister was gone. It should've been
them taken by that monster, not her. She hadn't deserved it. She'd never done anything but be kind, especially to them.
The monster had left them with a bit of a limp - unless that was only because of their sister shoving them out of the way - but they felt they deserved that, as punishment for... not protecting their sister? Surviving without her? They weren't entirely sure, but whatever it was, they certainly deserved it. They probably deserved even worse.
But since that day, they'd tried very hard to protect those they cared about. It never seemed to go quite right, though... no matter hard they tried. By this point, they were beginning to believe that
this was their real punishment from the universe - they would lose everyone they loved, no matter their efforts, to repent for the day they'd let their sister be taken away.
The second was their best friend. It was a hungry pack of junkyard dogs - it had
somehow slipped their mind that they lived there. They'd allowed him to go off on his own to fetch some snacks, as they'd been mildly ill that day. How foolish of them to forget - to let him wander alone, unprotected, into that pit of death.
It had usually been their sister that remembered things like that. They'd tried to memorize every inch of the city - every inch of
everywhere they went - after that day. They wouldn't have any more foolish incidents.
But no. There was one more, and it haunted them each and every day - perhaps as much as the previous two. Perhaps more.
Their mate - their beloved. In a cruel twist of fate, she had died the same way his sister had, many seasons earlier.
A flash of metal.
BANG. And she was gone.
There was nobody he could protect.
