Tia plugged in her headphones and started typing. Their claws cloaked over the keys. She heard a cough behind her. “Tia! What are you doing?” “Uhm…” Tia pulled off their headphones and looked at the teacher. The teacher looked over the computers and Tia. “The computer lab is a privilege, and supposed to be used for schoolwork only.” Tia looked across the room, where a bunch of girls were giggling and looking at each other’s social media posts on the computers. Tia sighed. The teacher was still droning on about computer safety and rules and restrictions. They cracked a small smile. They had saved their progress on a small flash drive, and stored it in their small drawstring bag. As the teacher kept taking and shutting down the computer, the bell rang. Tia grabbed their books, smiled at the teacher and left the lab. She hurried to the fake plant by the water fountains, and waited there for five minutes. When she was sure that all the kids had gone, Tia started the walk home.
She set the drawstring bag down on her desk and pulled out her laptop. She put in the flash drive. Tia plugged in their headphones, and started coding.
Tia was coding in the lab again, when the teacher pulled her aside. “Tia, you have been using things the school doesn’t want you to use in the computer lab. It should be used for school purposes only. I have talked to the principal, and we have decided that you cannot use the lab anymore unless it is for school purposes only.” Tia could feel their face getting hot. They couldn’t use the lab to code, and then the popular girls can watch shows on the computers? Tia grabbed her bag and left.

Prompt:

Miriam is a marine biologist who frequently visits the beach to research the plant and animal life in her area. The last time she went to the beach, while swimming, she noticed a lot of kals making a ruckus around one area. While usually, this wouldn't be anything to worry about, something seemed... off.

She waded her way over and noticed two manatees that swam close to the shore. Although it would be concerning if they got just a bit closer, Miriam knew that they likely would swim away soon, so she tried not to worry about it too much.

The more concerning thing, though, was that quite a few kalons were trying to pet the manatees. Miriam didn't want anyone to harm them, but she knew she couldn't do much about that. As soon as more kals approached, one manatee avoided everyone and swam towards deeper waters. But the other stayed behind, and, essentially, just floated in place. She didn't want to believe it, but she knew something had to be wrong.

The manatee left behind had a large wound, spanning from the upper part of their left flipper to the base of their neck. Only a boat propellor could've created that gash. Panicked, Miriam found some seaweed (knowing that it heals wounds faster) on the ocean floor, and tried to patch the cut as best and securely as she could, all while a large crowd of beachgoers gathered. The lifeguard never saw (Miriam thinking it was because her fur matched so well with the ocean water), but an older kalon in the crowd spoke up.

"HEY! stop hurting that manatee!"

"ma'am, i'm qualified. please, give me a moment."
Miriam knew she broke the law, but for good reason.

"Yeah right... I'm reporting you. LIFEGUARD!"

The lifeguard was asleep.

Your story, despite the word limit, included descriptive aspects that helped lay out the setting and characters in the scene as the story unfolded, and the story itself had a lot of depth - I felt like I could get a glimpse into Miriam's perspective and personality from her actions. Overall, your entry was very nice imo - I hope you enjoy having Miriam!
