Yellowkit remembers seeing her adoptive mother's blurry face when she opened her eyes for the first time.

She gave a soft meow, and scrambled up on her siblings.

They giggled, rolling together in the soft moss of the nursery den.

Yellowkit's first week was this way: sleep, eat, sleep, eat, sleep, eat and play.

She mostly loved play, because she got a chance to play tag, hide and seek and spend time with her siblings.

It's very hard for such a young kitten to remember his life before being adopted, but the cats of this Clan aren't afraid to tell him. They don't sugarcoat anything— they aren't afraid to tell him the truth, no matter how grim the situation was.

Abandoning kits isn't uncommon in the desert. What was uncommon was the fact that he was found.

The Clan was not at all prepared to care for a foundling so early on in its creation, but they did their best, trading shifts to care for the young kit. There was never a doubt that the Clan of Eternal Sun would take him in, such a tiny defenseless kit would not be abandoned to the brutal sun and harsh winds. And Reed knew he was loved. No matter how weird his adoptive family was. To a kitten, both the desert and the future stretch on for an eternity.

There is no end to the sands of time. Each day is a lifetime, a whirlwind of play and an ocean of sleep. There are things to do, places to see, cats to meet (nevermind that he's already explored the entirety of the Shelter, and knows his family by heart). His belly is full and the sun is warm on his fur and every day is a new adventure.

Honeybreeze tried asking, once, what Wren was planning to do when he was older. All she got was a blank stare, and a question asking if they could go to Milk Lake to take a dip and cool off. She hasn't asked again.

When Wren is older, he will worry about his future. There will be plenty of time to stress about his future, whether he will become a Scavenger and provide for his Clan, or a Denwarden to protect his home, or a Roamer to find new horizons, or a Medic to care for his Clanmates, or if he wants to shoot for the stars and become the leader, or if he wants to strike out on his own and leave this life behind. His life will grow chaotic and messy, a million ways his life could go wrong.

But for now, his belly is full and the sun is warm and there is time for eternal play, and never enough time to worry about a future that seems it will never come.
