For many years, the Spirit Bear was considered a legend of the Gitga’at and Kitasoo Native Peoples. Their legends told of a time when the glaciers finally receded, and it was Raven, the creator of the rainforest, who made everything green. Raven also decided to make one in ten black bears white, to remind him of the time when the world was white with snow and ice. Raven decided to set aside a special area of the world for these bears – now known as the Great Bear Rainforest. It was a remote paradise where the bears were to live in peace forever. xx

drip, drip, drip

a constant sound, ever present. ever grating. it was terribly cold. so cold there was barely any warmth left in him. he huddled closer to his waning fire as the cold embraced him harder. snow barricaded the exit so all he could do was shut his eyes and wait until morning. it was strange, every time he dreamt it was the same nightmare, but this time was different.

he saw a familiar scene, a little one looking up at him at his feet. it was a face he could never forget. "kasha, kasha!" that voice was almost enough to make him start crying. he pat his little sister's head and scooped her up in his arms. "haha, yes! it's kasha!" for the first time in months, kasha laughed. he was home again, back in his little village in the mountains. the sun was shining brightly, his father was gearing up to fish, his mother was sharpening arrow heads. it was just like the good old days. and when he looked down he was wearing his old summer clothes.

when he looked up the dream had shifted. it was his favorite festival, one where they would give thanks to the land and all that inhabit it. he participated in games with his little sister, got a bit too competitive doing archery contests with his parents, and ate all his favorite foods. he laughed and played and danced the night away. and when the morning came, he watched the sun rise of the trees and sparkled on the dew. it was so beautiful. "it's been so long kasha." far too long. "please stay with us?" he would love to.

the land they loved had different plans, however. every other year when summer would arrive, sacrifices were given to the tree of life. possessions, food, and the like, for permission to live on a perfect, undisturbed paradise. but the tree they gave to would always grow hungrier, and each festival it desired more until one day they could no longer accommodate. his home, all wiped away with a heavy storm of white. his family, sealed away in ice. the sun would no longer shine and the seasons would no longer change. the cold was here to stay forever, with kasha as its last prisoner. it was then that he realized what they worshiped was not the tree of life, but something far more sinister. since that faithful day he's wandered the barren land of snow, searching for answers on how to bring everyone back.

his paradise was gone, but he was going to get it back even if it killed him.
