Prompt:

Spion wags his tail curiously. Who are all these new people on the couch? Tail wagging faster, he decides he doesn't much care who they are, so long as they pet him. The puppy jumps on their laps and reaches up to lick their faces before quickly moving onto the next person and finally stopping at his owner. She laughs with her friends, stroking the small pup until he curls up on her lap.

Laying his head on his paws, Spion yawns, figuring he could doze while the humans watch a show. He couldn't have been more wrong!

The movie began normal enough, with a happy family playing with their children. Spion opens his eyes, tail wagging a bit at the sight of the family's dog.

But then the scary stuff began. Spion is wide awake now, eyes glued on the screen like a deer in headlights. Floorboards creak as the main characters walk around in the dark, glancing around themselves nervously. And when they finally relax, assuring themselves they're alone, BAM! The shadow leaps out and they scream!

Every time that happens, Spion's owner and friends scream out as well. Spion jumps a little, but he is exhilarated by the fright. The adrenaline rushes through his veins and he eagerly leans forward, watching the movie even more intently for the next scare.

The movie ends a short while later, much to Spion's disappointment. His owner's friends leave, milling out of the house one by one.

"Come on Spion, time for bed!" his owner says cheerfully and although Spion doubts he can sleep now, he follows her. Curling up in bed, Spion lets his eyes close. That was a fun night.

Except he can't fall asleep. Eyes half-adjusting to the dark, Spion can make out shadowy shapes but can't tell what they are. He glances around nervously, feeling a sense of dread prickling his stomach. He takes a deep breath, trying to calm down. Everything's fine. A crash! sounds in the other room, breaking the quiet and Spion jumps. Ok, maybe everything is not fine.

He glances over at his human who's fast asleep. He has to protect her from whatever is here! She's not going to end up like those other people in the movies they had watched. Standing up, Spion looks towards the door, fear coursing through him. I better check that out. I'm like a spy. They won't be able to catch me, he reassures himself. He often likes to pretend to be a spy, sneaking around the house as if he's on a secret mission. But now, he may have to fight like one. That is, if the monster doesn't get him first.

But wait! What if... what if he scares the monster? The people in the scary movie never tried that. It could work! Spion slips his ghost costume on, his secret spy disguise. He creeps down the hall, thinking about his plan. Like a spy, he has to pretend to be something he usually isn't. Now he's a spooky ghost and has to be scary like the movie one!

Another crash! happens, and this time Spion can tell it's coming from the kitchen. He takes a deep breath in anticipation and leaps out from around the corner. Letting out his spookiest howl, Spion closes his eyes tight. Please work!

It works. The shadow digging through the trash bolts away, squealing in fright. Spion opens his eyes, watching it run out the doggy door. Ha! Take that!

His owner runs in, flipping the lightswitch on.

"Wha-" she starts, but sees the trash laying on the ground and the long paw prints leading out the door. Her eyes widen.
"Oh no, a raccoon! And you scared it away Spion! Such a good scary boy!"

She lifts him up and Spion wags his tail, licking his owner's face. That was fun, he realizes. And I'm not scared anymore. Maybe that was the problem with the people in the scary movie. They were scared of the monsters and the monsters weren't scared. Well then, he will just have to protect his owner from any monster that came by making sure they're the scared ones!

Spion curls up against his owner when they go back to bed, letting out a soft sigh. He will sleep well for the rest of that night. After all, he's the scariest thing out there!

Spion doesn't get scared anymore by the movies. Sure, he does get a little nervous, but every time he sees something scary happen in the movie, he reminds himself of the time when he was the scariest thing in the room. And now, well, he's working on that skill, scaring some of the other collies whenever he can. It's all in good fun though, and although not the usual reaction from dogs to scary movies, the others love Spion for his newfound fearlessness.

Birch lay on her back, legs splayed in the air, on the couch in between her two owners. She was sleeping, but not for long.
The female of her owners jumped and screamed, and she was instantly on her feet. Groggily, she looked around, trying to find the source for panic. Both her owners both laughed and sat back again, and Birch was incredibly confused. She looked back and forth between the two, then turned to Mowgli, the other dog in the house.

“Mowgli? What are they screaming at?” Birch trembled slightly, glancing between her two people.

Mowgli looked up from where he lay on the floor, then glanced at the television.

“They’re just watching a scary movie Birch, it’s okay. They do it around this time of the year every year.” Mowgli chuckled, before settling his head down again on his paws.

“Oh, okay.” Birch replied, unsure what his words meant entirely. She too, settled back down, but this time on her belly. She watched the screen as the movie played. The room went quiet, and ominous music made her fur stand on end. Suddenly, someone’s face appeared on the screen followed by a loud cRACK and Birch shot to her feet, terrified.

She leant backwards into her owner and he scooped her up, bringing her close to his chest. She trembled against him.
Both her owners were laughing, and the movie credits flashed across the screen and they turned the lights on.
Birch was placed on the floor where she padded over to Mowgli and settled against his fluffy coat.

“That was terrifying.”

Osiris had always been interested in the moving pictures on the black box atop the table; that of which his owners seemed to be so fond of, his favourite pass time had to be snuggling under the blanket his youngest owner relaxed under on the couch, tilting his head at the questions movie characters asked which seemed to bring great joy to his owners as his ears at this point were far too big for his small puppy face. His first experience with the moving pictures which his family called 'movies' was one of curiosity; horror movies were his favourites to watch as then he got the blanket all to himself and could even sneak some popcorn off the floor after as the mother of the family seemed to like to throw it everywhere when anything remotely spooky happened, Osiris couldn't stop his tail from wagging when watching tense buildup scenes; he was so excited to see the scare happen he doesn't notice the loud noise coming from his tail as it hit the leather exterior of the couch (which his owners didn't love so much) and then... Boom! the jump scare happened; Osiris gets scared simultaneously by the moving picture and the sharp gasp of his owner; followed by the barrage of small landing noises as many popcorn kernels scatter on the floor and underneath the couch. With a still wagging tail and then looks at is owners with a joyous smile on his face as if to be laughing at the fear of his owner in the most cutest and acceptable way possible he usually moves closer to them to give them some comfort before snuggling back up with his favourite blanket ready to watch the movie again!

Osiris had done this every movie night since he came home with them which is what influenced his routine behaviour of bringing his blanket to the couch at 8 every saturday to watch a movie, he tends to mope when he isn't allowed to watch one with them or they don't have time to that day and you can bet he won't even look at them until they invite him to come watch another; he would go so far as to not eat any treats offered to him until he could secure the prime movie watching spot he came to love. Whatever weather you can bet Osiris would be sitting on the floor next to his favourite spot with his blanket in his mouth with a wagging tail making a loud baging on the vinyl floor boards. Osiris also loves to focus on his human owners when they're watching a movie; when he doesn't know what's happening or can't quite work out what's going on in the movie he will look at them for a few seconds so he can decide what emotion is currently happening; this has led him to be a large talking point in his family and around their friends, though most of them believe he isn't capable of understanding what they are feeling watching the movie his family swear by his very perceptive abilities!

Her favourite treats are anything with pumpkin in, so you can imagine how delighted she was when the familiar aroma woke her from her slumber on a halloween evening; her small owner Maisie and her older owner Adam were sat at the table smiling happily when Erin trotted in; tail wagging with a smile. Adam tapped on his leg to Erin and pulled one of the chairs out with a faint kissing sound to the small pup; Erin happily made her way over to the seat and hopped up planting Adam a very large lick as she jumped up, as a form of gratitude, Erin sat happily looking at the duo with her tongue flopped out of her mouth and her ears stood up attentively, she was excited to watch Maisie and her dad have some quality family time together; and after a rough start in life, she was more than happy to be included in the activity. Maisie and Adam had hours to waste doing the carving, and that they did, though they had some music on the tv to drone out the noise of the fireworks outside, Erin couldn't have been happier! Erin loved to watch the smile on Maisies face as she made out the face of her pumpkin, Adam helped her with every nook and cranny of the face to get it perfect, after 2 hours of scooping pumpkin insides and doggy drool pooling on the floor; adam grabbed one of the battery operated tea lights from the kitchen drawer to set the pumpkin ablaze to stand proudly outside of their garden, to entice the socially distanding ghouls and goblins to collect their seasonal candy! Erin and Maisie looked on in awe at their pumpkin creation as Adam put it proudly on show on the window ledge. Boo’s owners are horror movie junkies. Always loving a good scare. As for Boo, he started off slightly afraid and uneasy. Jump scares used to terrify him and Boo would spend the rest of the night whimpering in his owner’s arms. However, the more he watched it, he more he became desensitised to it and it eventually became extremely predictable. The background music, the tense atmosphere, it was all a giveaway to what would be coming. After he was able to analyse that a jump scare was bound to happen, he wasn’t as afraid anymore. Sure the actors and actresses had amazing makeup that made the ghost even more terrifying but Boo was able to sleep better at night knowing it’s just a movie.

Now, Boo takes each horror movie as a challenge. He would glue his eyes to the television, staring it down the entire time, waiting and watching for jumpscares. Just as the jumps are pops out, he’ll bark at the television, “challenging” the ghost. Of course there are some times where he gets spooked but he won’t let his loses get him down. Even his owners find it entertaining that Boo would take each movie as a challenge. It helps to lighten the mood and makes for an entertaining video to show.

The first time Cinnamon encountered pumpkin carving?

It was absolutely traumatising.

Even up till now, Cinnamon would still avoid it. The poor thing was a mere pup, barely able to walk. She was the barn’s precious autumn rescue puppy. Cinnamon had only learned to walk recently and was exploring the world, away from her pen and the comforts of the room. Her owner had left the room door ajar and little Cinnamon snuck out through the gap. It seemed that her owner was off somewhere and she quietly followed behind. The owner caught sight of a clumsy brown bean at the corner of her sight and smiled, paying no heed to it. Cinnamon looked up and saw her owner walk down the corridor towards a door that looked different than the one in her room. It had frosted glass panels and the moment her owner opened it, a cold breeze rushed in.

It was a portal to another dimension.

She was greeted by sights and smells she had never encountered before. Cinnamon tried to follow her owner as best as her tiny paws could carry her. She closed her eyes and ran. When she stepped out, it was a whole new world. What sort of alien place was this?? It was foreign yet beautiful. The air smelled clean and it was rather chilly. Big round orange orbs laid sprawled out near the entrance of the portal. Her owner took a bright orange one and carried it a short distance away. Not wanting to lose her owner in this dimension, Cinnamon quickly followed.

Her owner eventually settled down and set the pumpkin in front of her. Cinnamon smelled the orange orb, it didn’t smell like much. What did her owner want to do with it? She sat herself next to her owner and watched. The owner took out a small knife and stabbed it into the top of the pumpkin. Cinnamon yelped. The owner circled the top of the pumpkin with the knife as the poor pup watched in horror. Afterwards, the owner held the stall of the pumpkin and pulled up. Seeds and juice fell out, making a mess. Cinnamon was absolutely shellshocked. She couldn’t process what was happening. The pumpkin was the laid on its side, allowing Cinnamon to have a good look of the gooey, stringy innards. Her owner reached a hand in and scraped it all out, creating a seedy, stringy mess on the grass. Cinnamon couldn’t take it anymore. She ran back into the house crying, traumatised by what she had just witnessed. The poor pup ran and hid under the bed, refusing to leave for the rest of the day. She couldn’t believe her owner was a murderer. It took days after for her owner to fully comfort and hold Cinnamon as she would refuse to be held and would cry when carried.

Pierre snuggled into the blankets, only to be exposed the next minute. They all sat down on the couch eager for the movie, or in Pierre's case cuddles, and snuggled up under the blankets.
Pierre slowly drifted into sleep, in the crook of a knee. As Pierre slept, the smells of popcorn, apples and cider filled his nose and dreams with images of sweet food.
He suddenly woke at the sound of a shrill screech and 2 terrified screams. He woke, stood and tumbled off the couch in his confusion. His owners paused the movie, catching their breath from the fright. One of them helped Pierre back on to his little legs, and sat him on the couch. They all huddles together to let the shock wear off, and decided to call it a night. They turned off the TV, and began getting ready for bed. Pierre was given a bit of apple to nibble on, and his owners cleaned up the food and went to sleep.
As his owners walked farther, and farther away, he swore he could still hear the screeching. Looking up from his bowl, the TV suddenly flashed off. He heard footsteps behind him, but nobody was there. He'd seen both of his owners walk off to bed, who else could be there?

Cheval was laying down in her dog bed, sleeping away. She was having a wonderful dream, she was just about to reach the finish line-
The door to her house shut loudly. She awoke from her slumber to see her owners carrying two large orange things over to the table. Confused, she decided to go check it out! She stepped out of her dog bed and stretched, and began walking towards the table. When she got there, her owners greeted her, but returned to their vegetables. Hmm. She thought. They usually greet me with open arms and kisses, what's got them so busy?
Cheval got up and sat on her doggy chair to watch what was happening on the table. They had small and large knives cutting open the vegetables, scooping out it's seedy insides. She sniffed the seeds, and lapped one up. Sour. She shook her head. Her owners laughed. After a while of watching them go at their craft, they finally gave her a bit of attention. They turned around their odd orange spheres to reveal what look to be . . . a dog? She tilted her head, and though, Hm, that look's familiar, where have I seen this?
She gets on the table and waddles over to the gourds. She sniffed it, and put her face up to it. It matched her face perfectly, it was her! The other pumpkin had a bone shaped hole in it. She quickly found the bone shaped piece and went to work on carving her own creation!
