prompt:“Melinda? What’s wrong?” said the raven between two yawns, holding the front door open.
Melinda stood before him a bit sheepishly, rubbing her eyes. “It’s one of those dreams again…” she mumbled.
Victor knew perfectly well what dreams she’s referring to. He went through them as well when he first came to the then-abandoned Nevermoor.
It’s somewhat of a lucid dream, yet the only thing she’s in control over is what she says. It always starts out by her standing in a dark room with walls that look like vines, moving like worms in black, oily mud. After a short time, a circle of shadowy figures with white eyes would emerge from the ground, surrounding her and whispering things she never understands. The dream would just keep on going like this until she wakes up.
"It's been like a week now..." she said, "Is there a way to... you know, make it stop?"
"Alright, look." he sighed. "I know how you feel about them, Linda, I went through the same thing when I came here. But you know the only thing that'll stop these is introducing yourself and talking to them. You know, getting to know each other a bit."
"Yes, I know, you said so, but... whenever I see them I just... I can't, Vic'! They're just too scary and creepy!"
The raven let out a giggle. "They always are at first! But believe me, once you get to know them you won't find them scary at all. Especially▝ ▙ ▞ ▛ ▞, he's honestly the nicest one of them!"
Melinda wasn't sure what the noise that left her friend's beak was.
Noticing her rather confused stare, Victor just waved his wing saying she'll find out soon.
"Trust me on this, Mels. They really aren't here to hurt you."
The two fell silent for a short moment before the deer spoke up again.
"What are they anyway?"
"Well..." stammered Vincent, "I... honestly don't know."
He saw the uncertainty on his friends face so he quickly added: "But they've been for a long time now! They told me they were protecting Nevermoor and its citizens."
"Wait, you can understand them?!"
"I'm the mayor, Mels!" the raven laughed, "And for some reason, I can understand them just like I can understand you or anyone else."
Melinda thought about it for a moment. If what he said was true, then there really can't be any harm in trying to at least look at them, right?
Sighing, she said goodnight to her friend and promised him that she'll try and get to know these "protectors of Nevermoor", whatever they may be. And she'd be lying if she said she didn't want to find out what they are.
