it's spooky season, and i think this kal is a good way to both wrap up my adopts and to get into the halloween spirit !!

spooky story: "Shhh, settle down now!" Iolanthe pressed a finger to her lips, giving the kits a pointed but warm look. "Don't you want to hear the Halloween story?" There was a chorus of yeses, though a couple of the kits shook their heads. She settled in the chair with the book and looked at one of them. "Why do you not want to hear the story?"

"It's scary..." the kit whispered, clutching their stuffed animal closer to their chest.

Iolanthe gave the kit a gentle smile. "I know it is, but it's important to hear. And once you've heard the story, you'll be so much more strong and brave! Can you be brave for me?" The kit nodded after a brief pause. "Yes, Ms. Io."

"Good!" Iolanthe smiled at them again and tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear, opening the book to its first page and turning it to face the children, beginning to read.

"In the forest, dark and deep,
There lies a monster fast asleep-"

"Why is the monster asleep?" one of the kits interrupted. Iolanthe stifled her sigh and gave the kit a patient smile. "Even monsters have to sleep. You'll see in a bit that it'll wake up." Clearing her throat, she began up again.

"With razor teeth and blood-red eyes
And wings that take it to the skies

After the day, when moon is full,
The monster awakes from its lull-"

A different kit's hand shot up into the air. Iolanthe raised her head and her eyebrow. "What's a 'lull'? the kit asked, not waiting to be called on. Clearly she hadn't yet instilled on them the importance of waiting to be called on, but she'd work on it. "A lull is like a pause, or a rest," she responded, then pointed back at the illustrations in the book. "See, the monster is waking up from its nap!

Its step shakes both the earth and stone
As it rises off its throne

Eyes like lanterns in the night
This monster is a dreadful fright

Its teeth are sharp as knives of steel
As it hunts for its next meal-"

"I'm scared!" one of the kits whined, cuddling closer to their classmates. Iolanthe studiously ignored the interruption and kept going, her voice dropping into a whisper at the more spooky parts.

"But when it opens its large maw,
Resting a dark head on its paw,

What comes forth is a lovely song
Saying, "Yes! Come along!

Within this forest you'll find joy."
But the truth is a terrible ploy.

When the kit enters that space
They're right in front of that horrible face

And with a smack! And then a thwack!
The kit has become the monster's snack!"

A couple of the kits shrieked as Iolanthe performed the sounds with gusto but soon quieted down to listen to the rest of the story. Iolanthe smiled internally. It was nice to finally feel like she had their attention.

"And with nary a tuft of fur remaining,
The monster retreats, moonlight waning

So beware the forest when the moon is round
For in there dangerous fiends abound."

She finished the tale and shut the book, setting it down on her lap. "So what did we learn from this story then, kits?" There were a chorus of responses, but the most frequent ones seemed to be "stay out of the forest", "monsters are scary", and "I'm scared of the dark". The Kinderdeen Forest, set a ways from the city, could be a terrifying place for young Kalons to wander. Not because there were any monsters hiding inside, but simply because it was a dark and mazelike space inside, with many a Kalon getting lost in the depths. Better to convince the kits that going into the forest wasn't a good idea now. As the kits scattered for their next class, chattering away, Iolanthe looked out the window and shivered as the wind howled past, fallen leaves fluttering in the breeze. The forest could be seen from this height, its dark expanse seeming to go on forever. Who was to say? Maybe there were some monsters hiding within. [ 690 / 800 ]

indentaethelind raced through the forest as the last, fiery streaks of the dying sunset vanished beyond the horizon. leaves crunched with every step she took, and plumes of white mist lingered around her face as she gasped for breath. her hands trembled as she brushed aside branches obscuring her path and picked up her skirts whenever she was about to trip on them again.

indentshe was tired, oh so tired, but the sound of heavy footfalls refused to leave her, and the chilling giggles that echoed through the cold night air sent shivers down her spine. she had heard the monster before she had seen it — a wailing screech belonging to a tall, grotesque being with teeth protruding from the mouth and claws sharp enough to slice her in half with a single scratch. aethelind was exhausted, but she wouldn’t rest until she had safely put distance between herself and that thing.

indentthat’s what she told herself half an hour ago. although the beast wasn’t fast, aethelind was tiring very, very quickly.

indent“renwicks never give up,” she told herself quietly, gripping the rosary she held tight within her thin fingers. what was the beast that was looming after her? could it be repelled by the holy power of the church? did aethelind dare try?

indentshe did not dare, and true to the motto of the renwicks, aethelind continued to run, wheezing painfully with every breath she took. mere hours ago, she had admired the craftsmanship of her dress and donned it for the sole reason that it was beautiful. now, with the corset binding her chest and the billowing layers of skirt upon skirt, there was only so much she could do before she tripped and couldn’t stand again. the ends of her dress was now covered in a thick layer of grime and mud, and for a brief moment, she despaired over how costly the dress had been and how it would never be wearable again.

indenthowever, that thought was quickly knocked into the oblivion once aethelind realized just how close the beast had gotten. its loud pants told betrayed its hunger, and how excited it was to delight in the little human in front of it. tears streamed down aethelind’s cheeks, and as she choked on her sobs, her foot caught against a tree root.

indent“no! stay away! get away from me!” she screamed as she fell, squeezing her eyes shut and averting her head, refusing to look at the thing that would bring about her demise. the rosary in her hands glowed, and rather than stop the beast from drawing closer, it seemed more interested than ever.

indent“stay away,” she said again, although much softer this time.

indentthe beast pounced towards her, and aethelind screamed again.

indentas expected, the beast was out to harm her. with one swipe of its large paw, it ripped off the limb that wasn't holding onto the rosary. aethelind's screams resonated through the trees, but there was no one there to save her. for a brief moment, the monster sat back on its haunches and grinned toothily, almost as though it was proud of itself. its tail shook in happiness at the sight of aethelind's tears and the sound of her blubbering wails, and it was pleased, almost too pleased.

indentit was painful. her body hurt all over from the overexertion, only for her to be knocked down by the beast. the blood continued to gush out of where aethelind's arm used to be with no abandon, and distantly, she tightened her hold on the rosary, feeling her vision swim back and forth from the sudden loss of blood.

indent“i don't want to die here,” aethelind whispered to herself, “oh god, please, i don't want to die here.”

indentthe rosary in her hand warmed up at the sound of aethelind's desperate voice, and emitted a harsh light that pierced the beast's eyes. the beast roared in confusion, temporarily blinded by the power of the rosary, and backed up enough for aethelind to free herself from the beast's grasp and begin running again. however, she didn't get very far before she fell again, feeling dizzier than ever. the rosary, sensing its master's waning life force, let out one last glow as aethelind's eyes rolled back in her head.

indentshe looked dead on the surface, but now, her soul was safe within the rosary. the rosary was her physical body now.

indentthe beast didn't dare touch the rosary after the events that had just occurred, and seeing how the body no longer had a soul for it to consume, it let out an angered huff and ran away.

indentall that's left would be for aethelind to wait for someone, anyone, to pick up the rosary.

indentshe was a ghost now, and yet, she wasn't dead.
