"My little one, my precious little one."

The winter was harsh and cold, and after weeks of living in a deep cave, the mother Scolipede hugged her final egg tightly, hoping that it was enough warmth to keep it alive. Out of all the eggs she laid, only one had yet to hatch, but she knew this one was something special. Unlike its other siblings, it had a rather different design, with two thin but long horns jutting out of its crest. While this special egg became her source of hope and joy, she knew that she couldn't put too much faith into it. Winter was long and cruel, and she knew that not all of her kids might make it through the cold. It was a naturally occurring thing that every mother would have to accept, but she hoped that the late hatching of this one was just because it was meant to be, not because of anything else.

Sighing, she laid her head down, gently resting it on the side of the egg, watching as her young Venipedes skittered about, complaining about the cold, clearly unaware of the harsher weather that surrounded them outdoors. They had no idea what the outside world had in store for them, and soon they would realize that it wasn't all fun and joy like they had thought. It used to be colourful and warm and bright once before, but as time went on, it grew colder and colder. The ice crept further into the mainlands, and who knew how far it would grow. It was her fault for not leaving her home earlier to scout for a better cave-- their nest was too far into the ice and cold for children to survive, to be able to escape the cold and back into the warmth that lay ahead; and she was too old to be able to live for much longer. This would be her last clutch. They wouldn't make it.

The egg beneath her shifted slightly. Instantly, she curled up tighter around it, willing herself to somehow generate as much heat as possible. She wouldn't let the world claim this one from her, not yet. There was something special about it that resonated with her. She knew that if her other children had any luck in getting out of the cold, it was with this one.

As she gently licked the surface of her now quivering egg, she signed in relief. It'll hatch. She may or may not be there to see it, but she knows it'll arrive just in time to make the difference in the world that it was meant to. She wouldn't know if it would be wonderful to many or to few, but to her, it was the most wonderful gift in the world.

As if it were a sign, the tip of the egg began to crack, and she closed her eyes, taking her last breath as her gift began to enter the world.

"Here, sis. I found this on the sidewalk."

The little handheld game was absolutely crushed. It looked like it had been hit by a car. At first Perihelia's nose turned up at such a device, clearly something destined for the trash. Her top set of eyes glanced up at her sister, while her bottom two were still focused on how absolutely awful this attempt at a present was.

"Do you bring home all pieces of trash you step on, Aphelia?"

"It seemed sad."

This notion was ridiculous to the younger sister, but at the same time, sounded just like Aphelia. Without working eyes, she had the worst habit of reading whatever she wanted into the things around her. The wind is angry. The electricity is excited. This smashed toy is sad. Of course, their mother was the type to agree with her just on principle, but Perihelia was not quite.

Regardless, she took the smashed up keychain into her hand and pressed a couple buttons, turning on the screen. A deep fracture greeted her, but behind that fracture she could just barely make out the shape of an egg, bouncing idly. It must have been some sort of virtual pet the owner was supposed to take care of, she guessed- like a Tamagotchi, or whatever. She'd never had one before, though she couldn't say she had ever asked for one, either.

"...Well, if you insist, I'll deal with it."

Satisfied, Aphe left the room.

As she spoke, she turned over the device, glancing at the bottom. It had some sort of port on it, perhaps a Mini-USB. Though given the state the thing was in, she wondered if it even worked anymore. Perhaps if she linked up the game to her computer, she could find out more?

Fishing in one of the drawers in her desk, she eventually found the correct cord. With a bit of persuasion, she managed to fit the cable into the port, though perhaps bending a couple pins as she did. That done, she opened the lid of her laptop. The screen on, without hesitation, she plugged the other end into her computer.

There was a pause, as the fans whirred to life and the hard disk groaned.

Then, a terrible electronic screeching from the computer's speakers, which made the Kalon flinch and cover her ears.

And, on the tiny screen, the egg popped open.
